John W. Mellor is Professor Emeritus, Cornell University, USA, and President of John Mellor Associates, Inc., a policy consulting firm. He was previously Professor of Agricultural Economics, Economics and Asian Studies; Associate Director and Acting Director of the Center for International Studies, Cornell University; Director General of the International Food Policy Research Institute; and Chief Economist of the United States Agency for International Development. One result is the massive rural to urban migrations that result in the Karachi, Dhaka, and Manila's of the World - unmanageable urban masses. The author is a firm believer in the importance of public sector extension agents - something that unfortunately has become anathema to the World Bank and USAID who believe that everyone should pay for whatever services they receive. They have successfully led a drive over the past 20 years to starve, eliminate, or privatize public extension services around the World. These extension agents may be underpaid and under supported but they usually live in the villages they work in, want to do good, and should be seen as an asset to take advantage of rather than eliminate.

I needed it for school so I had to buy it but I opened it once and since then have found way better refrences off the internet. its not a bad book just expensive for not that much info.

This is an excellent book to learn HTML5 and CSS. I would highly recommend if you are just learning and want to build a webpage.

the book is very rectangular, not just landscaped view. makes it unusable for tight spaces like reading on the train. it reads like a very dry dated mechanical manual. like reading through a html/css glossary rather than getting a vibrant learning experience. its a Flop & Fail.there are many better books on html5 and css3.

This was a great book and I am happy I came across it at the bookstore. I like the graphics that explain concepts such as z-index other types of positioning.

The book is well written and was useful for my college course. One issue I had was that not all the download material from the authors website was made available. The first five chapters were online but all the remaining were missing. I tried to use the online form at the website twice in a ten week period to contact the author and never got a response.

It's presented in the similar style, sketches with tips. For those who like the first book, you would probably like this one too.The second part on character design. In addition to the sketches provided by Mike Mattesi, he has invited other character designers to contribute their work and thoughts. Photos of models are provided to them who then create their own style of work. Each artist then describes their characters in terms of acting and emotions, showing how they try to get ideas across to readers.The guest artists are Rik Maki, Stephen Silver, Dean Yeagle, Jake Kazdal, Griselda Sastrawinata, Patrick Morgan, Ragnar, Erin Leong, Marc Perry, Teddy Newton, Steph Laberis, John Nenarez, Mike Daley, Phil Rynda and Deanna Marsigliese. The original Force and its sequel on character design stand out on my shelf as a pale blue stripe of fantastic drawing instruction. I was excited to see that stripe would be getting a bit wider as Mike Mattesi uses his dynamic approach to drawing to tackle the broad and difficult subject of drawing animals.The author's approach is to translate his method for drawing humans into drawing animals rather than starting fresh. Mattesi's basic principles of hierarchy and forceful drawing are outlined in the opening pages, but I'd recommend you read the original Force before taking on this one.The variety of animals depicted is quite good, especially for a book focusing more on basic forms rather than specific details. The book is divided into the three major structural groups; starting with plantigrade animals, which are built most like humans, following to digitigrades and ungulates.The book is very mammal-centric, however there is a fair sized section on birds and a sole drawing of a lizard gets thrown in for good measure. The drawings range from realistic to exaggerated in design, while all in the dynamic style of the series. The book ends with a gallery of the author's more artistic examples and even has color plate versions in the back.Mattesi's books are a must-have for anyone who wields a pencil. I'd love to have a shelf full of these blue books handling the various aspects of forceful figure drawing. This third book in the series is a big step in that direction.

I really, really like this book. I'd recommend it to anyone who likes Mattesi's method. I took it to a life drawing class with me once and the next thing I knew, everyone was asking to look at it. I actually like to copy drawings from this book in order to get additional practice (on top of incorporating the tips).

There's only a couple character design books out there. Most notably Creating Characters with Personality: For Film, TV, Animation, Video Games, and Graphic Novels. This new volume of Force takes on design from a more exploratory standpoint. One that can also lead to a foundation of more informed choices when working with Bancroft's methods later on.The text starts off with a review of the drawing techniques Mattesi laid out in the original Force. Not only the concepts of drawing with forceful lines and shapes, but also ensuring every aspect of your drawing make a statement about the subject. It's that thought process that leads to interesting designs.This book has no shortage of examples of experimental designs based off of posed models. Not only from the author, but also from several noted artists including Stephen Silver, Dean Yeagle & Ragnar. Each example includes explainations for the artistic choices made.Flipping through the pages of this book you, you won't find many of the tight, nailed down drawings you might expect from a character design book, but the principles Mattesi teaches build a strong foundation to create better, more interesting designs.

I like how the author compares the human body with animals. It helps make sense of how the legs work. And he covers different types of animals. Their legs and paws work differently depending on the type of animal. And making a comparison to human anatomy helps to clear up confusion about how things are supposed to bend.

This book does more than teach you how to draw animals--it teaches you the theory! As with any drawing book, it is important to read the text, not only look at the pictures, especially because Mattesi explanation of the process of animal drawing is the most valuable feature of the book. Mattesi gives his reader a solid understanding of the spirit of animal drawing, lessons on how different types of animals move, and a basic animal shape which serves as a blueprint for animal drawing. Using this book, a reader can learn the skills to draw any animal in any pose!

I got this for a brief trip to Southern Florida and it was quite helpful in identifying many of the plants I found. The book is arranged with plants from different ecosystems together which was supposed to make it easier to find things, but I actually found that confusing. What if you don't know which ecosystem? Don't some plants occur in several ecosystems? I ended up paging through the entire book to find plants. Still, it is a lovely book with lots of info. I like that it had all plants forms: trees, shrubs, flowers, grasses in one volume.

Wonder what the wildflowers are in your Florida nearby park, or along the trail where you walk your dog, or around the edges of your own yard? Walter Taylor's book(s) will help you find out. You can also learn what natural community you are visiting, or living in (the remnants of?), or driving through. It may also inspire you to purposely look for something beautiful, and will help you figure out where to discover it. Getting out in nature can bring you joy. Learning something new can bring you joy. Knowing what you are seeing will help you appreciate what you are seeing. Sharing what you know can bring you joy, too. So, after you make your discovery, go back . . . take a friend . . . and a photo or two [but if you pick that flower, it can't go to seed, reproduce, and bring someone else - or you - future joy]. There are opportunities for many delightful discoveries contained within the covers of this book.

I was looking for a book that would cover most of the wildflowers I might find in Florida. I found it! It also has good information on the various botanic areas of Florida and even many of the trees found there. It definitely covers more than "just" wildflowers. The photos are very good, often including close-ups of leaves as well as flowers, which helps in identification. Not exactly a field guide--it is fairly heavy, but I do must of my identification from multiple photos after I get home anyway. This is a truly comprehensive book. I'd recommend it to anyone interested Florida plants.

Have heard Dr. Taylor speak on a number of occasions. A great guide. The more people become aware of what can be lost by indiscriminate irresponsible land use, the more we can save.

Good book, but not his best. As a field ecologist this is a fun read but nothing I would take on the field.

I really like Walter Kingsley Taylor's works. I wish I could meet him in person. A really wonderful resource for those of us engaged in trying to bring back the Real Florida!

I didn't expect this book to be as creepy as it is. The first night I was reading it, I finally set it down when I could barely keep my eyes open anymore. Yet when I turned off the light, I was afraid to close my eyes. I kept peering into the darkness as I thought about a particularly scary scene from the book.When I read the description for this book, I was delighted. I love vampire books, and I've always had a fascination with the Amish. To see a story that combined them was unexpected and fun. What I didn't anticipate was the horror in this book. It's been a long time since I've read about scary vampires. I've gotten used to them being sexy even if they are evil. There are none of those here. These are monsters that make you fear not just the dark but even the shadows.The isolation of the setting adds to the creeping horror. It's pressing in on them from outside, and it's only a matter of time before it breaches their tenuous safety. I would recommend this to any horror fan. There are some truly gruesome and terrifying scenes.It's also a story about a restless teen girl whose world is imploding. She is so close to freedom that she can taste it, and then it's snatched away from her because of some unknown threat. At first she is more upset about this than anything else, because it was something that she had been looking forward to for years. She has always been a bit of a rebel, and she secretly breaks the rules to help an injured stranger.She is right at the age when teenagers question authority and forge their own identities. She grows apart from her childhood sweetheart and forms a bond with the guy she rescued. I understood why she made the choices she did, because she didn't have time to wait. I didn't read this as love so much as grasping for some of the adventure that she had been denied. The romance was her escape from the frightening reality of her life and her disappointment in the boyfriend who had suddenly changed.I really liked the main character, Katie. She is compassionate, impulsive, brave, and foolish. It was refreshing to read about a teen girl who is neither jaded nor painfully self-conscious. She has her teenage angst and jealousy, but she also has an inner strength that carries her through very rough times. She had a loving, supportive family, all of whom I also liked. Ginger was an important link to what was going on in the outside world, and it really added to the sense of doom when that link was severed. Her despair became part of the atmosphere of dread. The story had excellent pacing and build up to the climax.Alex wasn't the most exciting love interest, but his injury and the necessity for him to remain hidden limited what he could do. He was a nice guy, though, and I liked how their love scene was written. One of the best things about this book is that Katie truly got to be the lead. She was the one who was in the thick of all the action. Alex even made a Buffy the Vampire Slayer joke, which I appreciated. She doesn't have any powers, though, and has to rely on the protection of a holy man even as she wavers in her faith. He was one of my favorite characters, because he is the salt of the earth kind of person who just does what needs to be done and doesn't abide any nonsense.This is an excellent book if you can handle the creepy parts.

Creepy! I was not expecting to be wigged out with this book. That does not happen very often. Especially for a 'young adult' book!Kate is a young Amish woman who was ready to branch out and see the world with her friend Elijah. She is so very excited for her Rumspringa and dreams of going to the movies, fun clothes, etc. But the world is rapidly changing in ways no one expected. When a couple of young men don't return home one night, the community begins to learn of something very...wrong and bloody. Fearful of what is happening the Amish community closes their gates to the outside world in self preservation. After saving and hiding a young man, Alex, Katie has broken the Elders ruling. She is determined to learn the truth. But it comes with some high risks.Kate learns that what is happening is that people are turning into 'vampires.' These are very different from vampires I am used to. And with how they operate and do rapid town turning, it reminds me of zombies. So in my mind they are a scary hybrid.The story is fast paced and wonderful. It doesn't let go for an instant! The connecting toward Kate is strong and easy to step into her shoes and experience all the terrors she goes through. And to think, this is the beginning! The is a sequel to go read next!Read this at night, alone. If you can do that and are not spooked. A harden horror fan might not be granted but I have always enjoyed a good scare and that is so hard to find in books. This is decent there. And being a young adult novel, more appropriate. If you scare easy, read during the day, when someone else is home. Regardless, read this!

It's a pretty impressive YA debut, friends, because it was pretty much unputdownable from start to finish, and it has two REALLY excellent things going for it: One, an inside view of Amish communities that I found completely fascinating and refreshing, and two, a downright horrifying take on vampires that was literally terrifying. There is nothing-NOTHING-romantic or swoony or inhumanly beautiful about the vampires in THE HALLOWED ONES, and quite frankly, I'd take these vamps over any others any day.So I feel like I need to start out talking about Katie, who is a really wonderful main character. We get a really great glimpse of her life in the Amish community, and how she bristles against some of the rules and expectations of her family and the elders. Amish girls are supposed to follow rules and do things that they're told and not question anything. Katie has a bit of a reputation for doing the opposite, and that means that she is both easy to understand and root for, and a lightening rod for drama, not the least of which comes from the boy she takes in and houses in her family's barn against the rules and wishes of the bishop, who has decreed that, to stay safe, no one can come in or go out of their community. I really enjoyed her lots, and she adds a really great human element to THE HALLOWED ONES that ups the danger and fear like WHOA.As awesome as Katie is-and she IS awesome-the real standouts to me in Laura Bickle's book are the atmosphere, the vampires, and Amish. The first couple chapters of THE HALLOWED ONES completely gripped me with the creeps. See, the Amish live in a community that is basically sequestered from the rest of the world. They have no news, no phones, no TVs-no way of knowing that things on the outside are going to pot because there's basically a vampire-pocalypse going on. What they DO know is that all of a sudden, Katie and her neighbors stop seeing cars on the road behind their community, some of their number who went into the nearest town to work at the furniture shop haven't come home, and . CHILLS, I'm telling you. Like, real ones. When we do see the vampires, they are focused on one thing: SUCKING ALL THE HUMANS DRY. They have no humanity. They have no compassion or warm hearts or gorgeous, sparkly skin. They are only hungry, and evil.The way that the Amish react to the vampires in THE HALLOWED ONES gives us an incredibly fascinating look into Katie's Amish community, to their daily life, their beliefs, their language, the way they deal with the things they lack that the outside world has, like phones and convenience stores. They have these really old-school superstitions about things that I found completely fantastic. But, they also have a very old-school mentality of their way is the right way and they won't change for anything. The bishop and some of the elders in Katie's community create lots of drama and jeopardy because of the things they refuse to believe, and because of the tenets they hold on to when situations might be better served by something else. It's all really top-notch work from Laura Bickle.I also LOVED the whole idea of the Hexenmeister, too, who's basically the community's old sort of warlocky person. Or, well, more like folklore master who is the keeper of the oldest stories and superstitions. He's AWESOME.If there was a weakness in THE HALLOWED ONES, I'd say that it's maybe the relationship between Katie and the outsider boy she hides in the barn, Alex. Not that it's bad, because it's pretty fraught for lots of reasons, but to me the things that made the most impact on me were the vampires, the Amish themselves, and Katie. Alex and his relationship with Katie is important to her story, but she was about lots more to me. Which is awesome.I am BEYOND stoked that there will be more books about Katie and the vampire-pocalypse, friends, because Laura Bickle's THE HALLOWED ONES was scary, intense, atmospheric, and thought-provoking, and it provided a window into a community that I don't know very well but am completely intrigued by. Vampires + Amish = OUTSTANDING, and I'm ready for more.

This is a fabulous book for wine lovers, from beginners to connoisseurs. The series of vignettes are funny and very informative. We're pretty far along with wine, but we learned a lot of great stuff while being entertained. It's a book you want to give all your wine-loving friends for Christmas.

I love the author's loose style. It makes reading about wine more approachable for those like myself just jumping into the tank. Excellent.

A great writer, a great collection of stories on wine.

McInerney is a bon vivant, and his excursions to the world of wine always have as much to do with people as with drinks. Each story is independent and illuminating for anyone who loves the world of wine.

What a prolific writer he is!

The book is broken down into eight chapters, devoted to his favorite wines, winemakers, sommelier stories, pairings, ending with what we should end with after a night of wine tasting: “Bubbles and Spirits”.But, instead of writing the same old drivel about Napa Valley being the crown achievement of California winemaking – duh – he takes us to places not as familiar.For example, in the last chapter McInerney doesn’t spend much more on Champagne than he does on Armagnac, Chartreuse and Absinthe.Other examples are his columns on Tocai Friulano, Soave, Amarone, Bandol, Sagrantino di Montefalco, Cheval-Blanc and Kosher wines. As a true wine 101er, not all of these are familiar to me, or, I expect, most of my readers. It’s easy reading and the learning… just makes you want to taste something new.I dog-eared several pages (Yes, that term actually means something. I turned the tip of a page down as I didn’t have enough book markers and I owned the book) that I liked in particular. Here are some drops of McInerney wisdom:Writer Auberon Waugh segued from his own work and also wrote a wine column for Tatler. His columns are collected in a book called Waugh on Wine and is known, as McInerney put it, to produce “the liveliest and most pungent wine writing of the century.” He got into trouble using the word “anal” and commonly said wines were “filthy” or “disgusting”.Another pal McInerney quotes is Kermit Lynch, a wine store owner in California that doesn’t carry California wines. Lynch, per McInerney, said “Why is it that most men don’t like fat women but they think they like fat wines?”His column on monks making Chartreuse was a real history lesson for this vinophile. If you don’t know where Chartreuse came from, or even what it is, read McInerney’s take on it.McInerney’s column, “The Mountain Men” The Smith Brothers of Smith-Madrone, takes him on a journey after he discovers a surprise 97 Riesling, made by the brothers, inspired him learn just how an American Riesling from Napa valley “could taste this complex.”McInerney thinks out of the box, I only wish I could climb in there with him.

Did Methodists squander an opportunity in the wilderness? That seems to be one of the implications in Russell Richey’s new book, Methodism in the American Forest. Richey, always a provocative historian of Methodism in its American context, takes what seems a thin theme and turns it into a chaotic book that nevertheless entertains and enlightens along the way.At the center of the book is the Methodist tradition of camp meetings, which had their glory days in the early 1800s, but nevertheless continued to influence Methodism into the twentieth century. Drawing on the field preaching tradition established by Whitfield and Wesley, “Methodists sacralized American woodlands…as cathedral, as confessional, as challenge—as shady grove (nature’s cathedral), as garden (a Gethsemane where temptations might be found and spiritual solace sought), and as wilderness (a challenge through and into which the Methodist ‘gospel’ must be taken)” (7).In the camp meetings, Methodism’s polity, exemplified in the quarterly meeting, was joined to frontier revivalism, resulting in a powerful expression of the Spirit. In the wilderness, Richey argues, the camp meetings “proved especially powerful demonstrations of Methodism’s repudiation of genteel patriarchy” (54). Outdoors, “Methodism sustained its biracial ministry” by including white and black worshippers in ways that were not permissible indoors (71).Over time, however, the camp meetings settled down into more ordered affairs. Small cities for camp meetings popped up in the forests and by seashores. And Methodist leaders grew wary that the meetings were losing their spiritual power, that perhaps the social and leisure dimensions of the events were overtaking the spiritual.By the end of the 19th century, about the time that a camp meeting featured so prominently in Harold Frederic’s send-up of Victorian Methodism, The Damnation of Theron Ware (1895), Methodism’s sylvan ambitions were being harnessed by competing interests - holiness advocates, who had extended the conversion narrative beyond salvation to the second blessing and promotion of Christian perfection, and the Chautauqua movement, which used the forest setting for the edification of leaders in the Sunday School movement. One tended toward what emerged in the 20th century as evangelicalism and the other as liberalism - a breach still not healed.What could Methodists have done in the wilderness? They may have developed a doctrine of creation, an ecclesiology, or a theology adequate to the North American context. These things, Richey says, remained more subtext than text. And what Methodists will do with their heritage in the woods is still unclear.

Ritchie has written a history of Methodism in the American outdoors, specifically under the trees. The theological insights are illuminating. His tracing of the evolution of preaching outdoors in English fields to the trees of America, through camp meetings and Chautauqua meetings made somethings clearer that I've seen in other areas of Methodism. This is a useful book.
