I read this book because I wanted to make progress on my creative goals. I work a full time job but use my free time to work on a number of creative projects (drawing, painting, writing, blogging, making youtube tutorials). Recently I was really struggling to make progress on any of them. This book gave me the tools to clear my brain of creative fog and to prioritize my projects. Not only that, it gave me the option to forgive myself for not meeting my creative goals. That sounds trivial, but it's not. I was blaming my lack of progress on being tired from working 8 hours and not on the real problem - the fact that I was in a state of creative paralysis from my lack of prioritization.As you read through the book, you may think many of the suggestions are "obvious" or "common sense". I'd encourage you to not simply read and move on, but to actually do the suggested activities, even if they seem simple or silly or boring. You'll be surprised by how well they help you get clarity on things. I can see myself using this book more in the future any time I'm in need of a creative tune-up.Within a week of reading this book, I managed to write - from start to finish - a full 24 page comic script that I had been trying to start for the past 6 months. "Tormented Master" is an insightful biography of Rabbi Nachman of Breslov, an important Hasidic master from the late 18th century, whose stories and teachings are still popular today. The author, Arthur Green, has written a psychological profile of Nachman without which it would be impossible to fully understand Nachman's teachings.I had read some of Nachman's work prior to picking up "Tormented Master," and noted that many of his teachings address depressed states of mind and offer spiritual advice on how to overcome despair. It was not surprising then, to read in Green's biography that Nachman suffered from protracted bouts of depression that alternated with periods of euphoria. His behavior was often erratic, reflecting a personality that was haunted by chronic indecision and inner turmoil that ranged from low points of extreme self doubt to periods of soaring confidence during which he believed himself to be the Messiah. His shifting moods were inspired (or, depending upon your point of view, rationalized) by his interpretation of sacred and mystical texts. One day might find him ecstatic based on a verse from a particular psalm, only to be launched into despair a few days later after reading a commentary with negative implications.While one may interpret these reactions as that of a highly sensitive soul, the evidence Green has compiled indicates that Nachman may have been manic depressive even though the author never says this in so many words. At issue is whether Nachman was a victim of psychological processes that may have been largely beyond his control and if so, whether his spiritual drive was mostly fueled by a search for relief from the torments that he felt. Separately, one may ask whether he was a tzaddik because of, or in spite of, the crippling states of mind that he experienced. Ultimately, it is impossible to know whether he was entirely responsible for his own unsettled states of mind or if his agitation resulted from biological tendencies that were aggravated by his environment and ideas.After reading "Tormented Master," some may be tempted to dismiss Nachman's teachings as nothing more than his way of comprehending and coping with his alternating periods of despair and elation. In my view, however, there is fundamental spiritual truth in much of his writings, and how he arrived at it is instructive. A good many of his insights undoubtedly sprung from his psychic suffering, and thus he tried (and recorded) every possible spiritual method to rouse himself from his depressive states. Today we might call his processes therapeutic, however, his prayers, sayings, and tales were preserved because they contain important spiritual insights, and are inspiring and valuable tools for spiritual seekers.Be prepared to spend some time reading "Tormented Master." It's very well written and exceptionally insightful, however, the subject matter is so complex that I found myself re-reading many sections and marking numerous passages for further review. There are also extensive footnotes that provide a treasure trove of information.In short, very highly recommended.

Great book, very well researched. Don't agree with all his theories, but I learned a lot about the history of Chassidim in the 19th century. I was expecting a anti-breslev bias, but overall he is very respecting of Rabbi Nahman and Chassidim in general. Don't know his personal opinions, but in the book he was not attacking them, and gives everyone the benefit of the doubt. (Including Rabbi Nahmans Uncle and enemy Rabbi Baruch of Mezhibuzh.)

Great book. Portrays Rabbi Nachman's life, person and spiritual quest, keeping paths open. One thing that comes through is the centrality of a paradoxical faith that has no limits. It meets the deepest doubts, despair, longing, grows stronger from them. Nachman's faith was pre-holocaust. Whether it could have met such horror we don't know. Yet a psychoanalyst, Wilfred R. Bion, writes of the psychoanalytic attitude as a faith that meets the deepest horrors, F in O, he calls it, faith in face of unknown ultimate reality. Faith in face of all the destruction that exists, existed, can be imagined. Is that possible? In this, I feel, Nachman and Bion are partners. I devoured this book. I only wish that the publisher would have used foonotes instead of endnotes. I thought given the fact the author was not a Breslover, not a Hassid of any flavor, that he managed to be fair. The Breslover Rebbe is enigmatic, brilliant, and complex. This book offers incredible insight without trying to over explain that which is unexplainable about Rabbi Nachman -which amounts to a great deal. I also gained much insight into the history of Hassidism in general.

This is a wonderful and engaging book. Very helpful in introducing the reader to Rabbi Nahman of Bratzlav. The book was in good condition and arrived in a timely fashion.

I've taken two plant taxonomy courses back east, so I'm usually ok using the popular Pojar book since I know my plant families pretty well and can navigate through it pretty easily. However, once in awhile I run across something I can't ID with certainty, and then I find this super handy as it groups plants by flower color, narrowing down the search.

Our kindergarten student is interested in wildflowers. We live in the Northeast part of the State of Washington. While most wildflower books pretty much ignore us this author has taken great pains to include our area.This book is so good that our child's older brother, who is in the third grade, carries the book with him on the family's weekly hike where the entire family, including the kindergarten student, identifies flowers.The author has a website [...] that has pictures (of fine quality) of all the flowers in the book. We plan to let the kindergarten student download the pictures of the flowers he has found locally, make comments about the flower and where he found it, and make his own little wildflower book of Northeast Washington. (I expect the older brother and parent may help some.) He may even start his own little wildflower garden next year.We found one flower that is supposed to only be on the west side of the state but because we have such sandy soil it is doing just fine.It is especially important, and useful, that the author is willing to answer questions submitted by email and is even available to return your phone call. The author does not have much extra time so the conversation is kept right on target but he fully answered all the questions I had.

If you are interested in figuring out the wealth of wild flowers that can be found in the Pacific NW then this book should be part of your library, the pictures of the flowers are not all as close up as I would like simply for the fact that my interest is purely in macro photography of blooms so shots in the book of plants as a whole are not as definitive as I would like in some cases but they do get you pointed in the right direction, the book is well laid out by colour and petal numbers making it easier to search specific flowers, the text and range maps are extremely helpful....in short, highly recommended.

I found it difficult to identify some of the flowers from the photos. So many lupines, such subtle differences. Same with the larkspurs, and the yellow daisy/dandelion look-alikes.

This book does a fairly good job of portraying and describing many of the most common wildflowers in the area. The range maps make it a little difficult to determine precise areas of proliferation. The photos are mostly good but one photo can't convey all the plant stages from bud to blossom, and all of the flower variables. The book is arranged by flower color so that is a help for those of us that don't know our flower families that well. So this is ONE of the books I use during my flower safaris but one can never be comprehensive.

This book got an award from the American Horticultural Society, and at first read, it deserves it. While a little heavy for a backpacking trip, it would easily fit into a day-pack for a trip to a high mountain meadow or other heavily flowered location. It is well organized, and the flower photos are detailed enough to be useful. Of the various flower guides I have, it comes the closest to covering mountain flowers in Washington -- while omitting most of the flowers that would never appear in this environment. It seems as though that should be an easy and obvious thing to do ... but I have at least 3 other flower guides that don't quite pull it off.

Most horticultural books on anything "Pacific Northwest" tend to overlook the arrid eastern half of Washington state, which is a vastly different climate than the wet western side of the state. This book doesn't. As a previous reviewer noted, the maps are a GREAT and help tremendously in narrowing down the possible options when trying to ID a 5 petal yellow flower with heart-shaped leaves. That said, I did sometimes have problems with the pictures. Most are so closeup that there is no mistaking the correct identification; others aren't, making comparisons difficult. Oh, and the common name index--a huge omission. But for the most part, this is an excellent resource.

This is a standard field guide with all the standard ups and downs. The photos are very uneven in quality and the information scanty...but it's a field guide, not a coffee table book!! If you want to get acquainted with the wildflowers up in the NW, this is the book that will help most to get to the genus and sometimes the species. This is a readable, clear, contextual look at Michelangelo’s life and work. If you want to learn a lot about the guy quickly, this is your best bet.

This books is sooo beautiful. I mean really. It's amazing. It was supposed to be a text book for my class but I love it and now it is going to be a coffee table piece to share with everyone.

This book was suggested for a course I am taking on Michelangelo. It is excellent in the format as to what the lecture series encompasses. I am pleased that I bought the book because it is an excellent reference in the event that I travel again to Italy and visit the museums and churches that have Michelangelo's works.

If you were to read only one text dealing with the great Michelangelo and his art, this would be the book. It is a succinct biography in which one also finds clear and well chosen discussions of the artistic works of the great Florentine. It would be fair to say that Professor Hibbard is a graceful guide to these works--he shows us the key elements of the sculpture, painting and architecture that made Michelangelo the preeminent figure of the Renaissance. And he presents them to us as the artist's life unfolds, so that we can understand the challenges met and problems solved at various stages in Michelangelo's development.The book is filled with a large number of black and white photographs as well as plans and drawings which, together, help the reader understand each of the works being discussed. Indeed, the reader would be hard pressed to find more than a handful of opposing pages that do not have one or more illustrations. For those who are so inclined and long to see more of each work, they are titled so clearly that a quick search on line can bring plenty more to look at. But the illustrations provided in the book are more than sufficient for the reader's understanding.If you are looking for a shocking expose of Michelangelo the man, with all of his secrets revealed (warts and all!), then you do not want to read this book. Professor Hibbard discusses Michelangelo's personality and personal life in detail, but always in the context of his creations. He writes with a deft and gentlemanly reserve that allows the reader to accept the facts without drawing unreasonable conclusions.The conversations about the well-known works - the Pieta, the David, the Sistine Chapel ceiling and Last Judgment - are all clear and helpful. The on and off again relationships with various Medici and Popes provides a helpful understanding of how and why some of the artist's projects were unfinished, or completed in terms altogether different from their conception.The discussions of the architectural contributions of Michelangelo are very good, and provide the reader with an appreciation of the sculptural qualities of these larger than life sculptures. Indeed, Hibbard's discussion of the Bibliotheca Laurenziana stairway and St Peter's are the best sort of architectural criticism to be found anywhere.At the end of the book, but separate from the extensive bibliography, is a section called "Notes for Further Reading", which, if followed, could benefit the reader who wants to know more.If you find this review hepful, why not read some of my other reviews! There is probably no greater art historian in the second half of the 20th century than Howard Hibbard and this book is one of his best. Professor Hibbard, who has also written books on Caravaggio and a study of Poussin turns his attention to Michelanglo. This is not a rehash of The Agony and Ecstasy, Professor Hibbard's interest is in the work and the artist and not a study of the outward events of this great artist's life. I found Professor Hibbord's criticism insightful and interesting. I recommend this to anyone who is interested in the renaissance.

In _Michelangelo_, Hibbard presents a unbiased account of Michelangelo's life in an enjoyable mix of historical narravitve and critical and contextual analysis. The writing is approachable with a minimum of high-brow art jargon. Hibbard also refrains from diving too deep into speculation about fine points such as sexuality and politics. This book is suited for those desiring an end-to-end introduction to the man and his art, or for those who have forgotten 90% of art survey 101, like me.

I was worried our daughter might never find that same love of reading her father and I have. She had not found a book that resonated and by the beginning of 3rd grade she was barely reading at grade level. Low and behold a friend in her class was obsessed with this book and had all of the girls in the class playing imaginary games based on it. Our daughter begged us to get the first one because she wanted to read it, when it arrived I worried it would be too difficult. Nope- she is now on book 4 and zooming through them. She even stayed up late over the summer unable to put it down. Now she is starting 4th grade reading 2 levels above grade level.Proves the importance of finding a book/series that captures their interests.

As an adult, I rarely read books intended for teens. However, a friend's daughter recommended the Wings of Fire series and while looking for them, I happened upon "The Menagerie".To say that I was delighted and enthralled is an understatement! This book is one of the most fun reads I have read in quite a while. As a fan of fantasy, it didn't take long to fall in love with the mythical creatures and the characters who are caring for them. Who wouldn't want to have a griffin cub to curl up with or a mammoth like Captain Fuzzbutt romping around their house?Young or old, if you want a book to settle in with and let your imagination soar I highly recommend "The Menagerie". I eagerly anticipate reading the next book in the series too. Tui and Kari Sutherland have an incredible gift for creating a story that is adventurous, clever, and fun.

This is a great series of three books (hopefully more to come). I've read them to my 10 year old son as part of our bedtime routine and he is so disappointed when we stop each evening. I've needed to lock his Kindle lest he read ahead. The story follows a young man named Logan as he adapts to a new school and the loss of his mother. Being the new kid in a rural setting, he tries to make friends but it's hard. Suddenly he is thrust into a world of mythical creatures and finds out things about himself and his mother that turn his life on its ear. This is a book that your kids will love (honestly it's hard for me not to read ahead myself).

before I read this book I had read every Wings of Fire book that had been published and loved them all, so I had really high hopes for this author. And I felt that this book was just as entertaining and captivating as the Wings of Fire series (which was also written by this author). There is good character development and a mystery that drags Logan Wilde into a world he never even knew existed. What I also thought was cool about this book is seeing all the different personalities of the mystical creatures that live at the Menagerie.

i love this series, I'm a little bit embarrassed to admit i'm 30 years old & decided to read the first book because my 10 year old son bought it at the book fair. I just wanted to see why he loved the book & was hooked. Cute, loveable, relateable characters. With so much violence in the media today it's nice to know that when a book says "young readers" it's appropriate for young readers.

My Thoughts: Yay! I finally get to review one of the Wings of Fire books, because most of the time my brother, Oscar, insists on reviewing them.Anyways, I just love these books. The characters are hilarious, the writing fun and easy, the mystery incredible, and everything else about it amazing. I loved hearing about the NightWings and how Sutherland eases the reader slowly into the dragon's world of war and shows us a little more of the mystery with each book. (Mystery being with the NightWings, RainWings, Blister, the prophecy, and the replacement dragonets...). Glory's POV was one I have waited for for a LONG time (OK, I've a waited for all of them, but who wouldn't want to hear about Starflight, or Sunny, or Tsunami, or.... ALL OF THEM) and it didn't disappoint. Her character was spot-on, and we finally got to learn a little bit more about her feelings towards being a RainWing. Blaze was hilarious - exactly the opposite of her sisters, kind of like a mix between Sunny and Queen Red Riding Hood from the Land of Stories - and Queen Glacier left me curious and intrigued about her character. (As a side note, I'm still confused about why there isn't an IceWing dragonet. It doesn't mention it in the prophecy - maybe the author added it in to show how flawed the prophecy really is? I don't know. Has anyone else realized this?) The end of the book, with SPOILER, Glory trying to become queen, was awesome, too.Pretty much every about this book, this series, was amazing, fun, rolling on the floor with laughter, PERFECT. :)

This was really cute, sweet story. The writing style and humor would make this an ideal choice for reading aloud, maybe especially with reluctant readers. The action-adventure and tale of budding friendship is well worth a while for those that enjoy shorter magical stories. The story does end with a cliffhanger, leaving several central plot threads dangling.

Our daughters love these books, including this one. They say the writing flows very well, easy to read, great adventures and they breezed right through the series. They can't put these books down! Highly recommended. (Our daughters started reading these when they were eight; one is now nine and the other ten. They have read all of the series including the Warriors series, Wings of Fire series, Seekers series, and Survivors series). They did not like the Survivors series at all. Our daughters did not like the Survivors series because they felt that all the characters were too similar to each-other and the plot appeared to be unorganized and missed it's meaning completely, (vague, confusing plot). In addition, my daughters state that the characters in Survivors appeared to be whinny and undesirable (difficult to connect with).

This book was super helpful. Loved the answer explanations and the lessons in the front of the book. Do all the practice tests for the best result! I used this for two weeks before the test and felt super confident going into it.

Kaplan completely missed the mark with this prep book. The SAT Literature test barely had anything about rhyme scheme or iambic pentameter or anything like that. Most of the questions had to do with mood and theme, not the technicalities of writing. VERY disappointed with my score and with this company. I would encourage buying a different book!!

Fabulous resource!

I used this book only for the practice tests, but I found that was all I needed. The test questions were comprehensive and very similar to the question types on the actual test, and the answer explanations were clear (unlike ambiguous explanations offered by some other practice books). Overall, a great purchase. Will definitely be going with Kaplan if I decide to take another subject.

This book is identical to the earlier edition - not sure why they are claiming a difference

A couple months ago, I took a practice test from this book and got a 500. Three days ago, I took an official practice test and got a 640. I looked over what I did wrong and think I noticed an issue with my approach, and yesterday I took the test for real. I'll update this with my score once I get it.Around 25% of the questions in the practice tests are on things like poetic meters and other extremely obscure technical terms that aren't even on the actual test. On the actual test, 90% of the questions are the same stuff you'd see on the reading section of the SAT itself, and the other 10% just ask about things like metaphors and personification, not freaking iambic pentameters and heroic couplets.And for the other 75% of the practice test questions, many of the "correct" answers are mediocre interpretations and/or poorly worded.e: 610. To be fair, I didn't get any sleep the night before due to being nervous about Chemistry, which I ended up only getting 650 on. And I only got 670 on Math II. Looks like I'm gonna have to retake everything :/

For people who like the travel narrative genre, this book will be very appealing. While many such books rely on humor or absurdity in describing their travels, this author is much more sensitive to the people and sites he encounters. He comes as a tourist without a political agenda but not adverse to talking to the people about the huge changes that occurred throughout the region. His visits to local historic sites are revealing since many are unknown to most of the world. The book is a good mixture of personal encounters and geographical/historical descriptions all of which are told in a very readable, captivating way. I found the author more interested conveying a feeling for the people and places he visited rather than how those things affected him, a common trap for travel writers. The author does a great job of getting beyond the headlines and giving us a glimpse of how life goes on AFTER a revolution.

It's interesting and alarming at times but I struggled with the way it was written.The sentence construction and flow of thoughts was not to my liking.

Another fast paced and hugely enjoyable narrative full of colourful and interesting people and places. It charts Tom's breakneck travels across North Africa's in the wake of the Arab Spring; where in the guise of a tourist he gets behind the seismic political changes that have occurred recently in the region. Tom asks the questions and reports the answers of those who have lived through oppression and are now experiencing the first promise of freedom. Littered with characters that have been gagged throughout their entire lives and are finally feeling able to speak out with some degree of comfort and safety. If contemporary history sometimes passes you by then here is a book that pieces together the key events and timeline that saw the demise of corrupt and often inhumane dictatorships. History will decide if the Arab Spring is in fact a False Dawn. A sequel that determines if the economic benefits, equality and personal liberties that are promised actually materialise is certainly one for Tom's future Title List!

North Carolina has always been my favorite state to visit. I purchased this book as a memento for all my visits. This is a very good example of buying a book unseen. This book was just terribly disappointing. The contemporary photography was mediocre at best the only enjoyable pictures were the vintage photos. I'm sure most shots were from film not digital. But worst of all was the printing; I'm sure the photography would have been much better if the printing was up to par. It is printed on quality paper but every thing seems faded and out of register. I'm sure this was supposed to be a coffee-table type book, but I'm not sure I want to even add it to my library. Text is fine and most of the photos are amateurish and picture print quality doesn't even deserve one star.

I gave this book to my Brother and Sister in law for Christmas. They are with the State Department therefore they are stationed in countries all over the world. In each country they have lived in they have a book to remember their time there. They originally hail from North Carolina, so when I saw this book I knew it was the perfect gift. I was correct! They love seeing all the places they remember, and sharing those memories with their daughter who has never been "home" to North Carolina. The photos are wonderful. The book is not an oversized coffee table book, but one you can store in a book shelf or on that coffee table. They can't stop thanking us for the book and the memories that it has brought to them.

I purchased this book as a pictorial presentation of my state to the Santo Domingo, Ecuador fire department. It was a simple gift representing the state from which they are purchasing their new fire truck. It was received well and appreciated considering this beautiful country has the benefit of ocean to mountain peaks as well.

This is a wonderful collection of photographs of North Carolina. The section on Scenes has some stunning scenes from the coast to the mountains. The People and Events Section shows North Carolinians and visitors who are notable in fields ranging from politics to the arts. The Sports section shows football, basketball, golf, baseball and even Highland games. North Carolina has them all.AA great addition to your library if you're interested in the Old North State.

I bought this book for my father, who is from the mountains of North Carolina and spent the last 20 years as a professional photographer. He was thrilled with it. The pictures are beautiful and you truly get a sense that Hugh Morton was a man who loved his state.

The photos are beautiful, and remind me of so many places I have visited in NC.

Destined to become a classic, Hugh Morton has captured the true essence of North Carolina. He includes the physically beautiful and the rich endowment of people the state has been blessed with. Chronologically, it covers an extensive period of time and mixes color with black and white photography. An excellent selection for the native North Carolinian or someone who has visited and was awestruck by its beauty, from the Blue Ridge Mountains to the Outer Banks.

Stephanie wrecks the usual car and ping-pongs between the hot and dangerous Ranger and the hot and domestic Morelli. Ranger says the “love” word to Stephanie, but it is Morelli at the end, offering her a pink, lacy thong. In the first few pages, Evanovich both catches readers up on the hilarious and cockeyed history of the preceding 15 books and gives fans a little more of everything they want, including the return of beloved stoner Mooner. in this installment of the Stephanie Plum series, she has inherited her Uncle Pip's lucky bottle and this may not be her good luck charm as she may soon be unemployed. Cousin Vinnie has run up a huge debt with his bookie, who in turn is heavily indebted to a mobster. When Vinnie disappears the ransom is the huge sum, with interest. To save her job, and the business, Stephanie, Lula, and Connie must raise the money while trying to track down where Vinnie is held to free him while they try to raise the huge sum of money. Vinnie's rich father in law is no help as Vinnie's wife threw him out just before he was kidnapped. The usual plot lines include demolished cars and Ranger saves. Still a five star story

I am reading/rereading this series & to this point, this is the best & most interesting book of all.Tho I am sure that each book could be read as a stand alone novel, why would anyone WANT to do thaaat?Knowing each character a little bit better - as each story passes along, the enjoyment magnifies.Even if one has to purposefully ignore the standard ploys, such as the heroine "requiring" 2 boyfriends who cannot be chosen between ... etc, this series is STILL an enjoyable series of stories, which have few equals.My rules are: Interests me, Avoids in-ur-face violence or sex, Makes me smile or laugh sometimes ... probably other stuff that will come to me later😊

Stephanie Plum is a bond enforcement agent, working for her cousin Vinnie. She is not the best bounty hunter but because of her tenacity and just plain stubbornness, she always seems to track her skips down and eventually apprehends them. Which is pretty good considering she typically does not have her gun with her, and even if she did it most likely wouldn't have bullets in it. She is constantly losing her cuffs, forgets to charge her stun gun every night and caries around extra hold hair spray in lieu of pepper spray.With this book, her skips included a man wanted for polygamy, a toilet paper bandit, and a drug dealer with a pet alligator name Mr. Jingles. Her biggest challenge is to rescue her cousin Vinnie from the mob with the help of Lula (who was at one time a prostitute) and Connie (office manager). If you like stories with 6 ft alligators, a stampede of cattle running through the streets of Trenton and the thought of hobbits crusading to the rescue, then I recommend this book it is very entertaining and has some hilarious moments with laughter.Based on the previous series with the Stephanie Plum character, the plot included Lula too much and not enough of Ranger the ex-military mentor and the homicide cop boyfriend Joe Morelli. It also could have included more of the crazy character grandma Muzar.

Stehanie's boss Vinnie is kidnapped by Bobby Sunflower who wants a million dollars to set him free. His wife does not care and his family does not want to pay to get Vinnie back. Stephanie, Connie and Lula do not have that kind of money, but they will do anything in their power to set their boss free and keep their jobs.I am always entertained by Stephanie Plum's books but this one did not feel as entertaining. I liked the plot, Vinnie is tossed around and the continuity seems fine, but I did not find myself laughing at the situations. I like that Connie is playing a bigger part in the book and that they act more as a team. But it was not as fun and I mostly read these because they make me laugh, hence the three stars.

Wow, that's a long summary! I understand that there are a lot of people who were disappointed with Sizzling Sixteen. You cannot approach the Stephanie Plum series expecting the rules of the "real world" to apply. That's why these books are the perfect summer reads: they are light-hearted, funny, sometimes silly, and totally implausible. Implausible, you say? Yes! In what dimension can you: Eat everything you want and not gain weight Blow up/wreck/irreversibly damage multiple cars Have an ongoing sexual-tension filled flirtation with two unbearably sexy men and never have either one of them give you an ultimatum Be saved from danger by grown adults dressed up as hobbits Never load your gun but manage to get away unharmed every time you're taken hostage (at least one time per book) Distract an alligator with fried chicken...can you see how I could keep going with this?If anyone knows a place where things like this actually happen, sign me up---I want to live there. Especially if Ranger will be there too...Just One Gripe:The plot is kind of weak, as usual. This is overshadowed by the fact that the series is so funny.The Best Thing About This Book:I read the Stephanie Plum series for the humor. They are laugh-out-loud hilarious! I bust out laughing at least five times per book and Sizzling Sixteen did not disappoint in that respect. Grandma Mazur, Lula, Mooner, the Hobbits, all of it was awesome!

So I didn't watch Avatar: The Last Airbender when it was first on tv. I think I was just a few years too old, thinking I was too cool for cartoons. Thankfully, in college I found the series on a popular streaming website and watched the whole series over a semester. I absolutely loved it. When The Legend of Korra came out, I DVRed every episode.This was the first Avatar: The Last Airbender comic I have read, but it will definitely not be my last. It felt just like a continuation of the show. Many comic adaptations of shows mimic the show they are based on with already done plots or more detailed back stories. This moves forward. It picks up where the show left off and continues Team Avatar's journey.I recommend this to all fans of Avatar: The Last Airbender, whether you are 14, 24, or 54. I look forward to picking up the rest of the parts in this story and checking out some of the other graphic novels already out there. I give this graphic novel a 4/5.

This is the newest addition to the series of avatar comics, and follows the same formatting as the others. The book is hardback and has quite a bit of weight to it compared to other books. The cover has vibrant colors, as do all of the pages contained in it. The only difference between this version of the comics and the individual volumes is that this contains all three volumes of Smoke and Shadow, has bigger pages, concept art, and notes from the creators in the margins of the pages. For the price, you would be losing money if you bought all the volumes individually, so I highly recommend getting this edition.As for the story, it's no worse than the other avatar comics. It's not better either, but maintains the same level of quality that you would expect from the avatar universe. The plot features Zuko as the main character, as does 2/3 of the other comic series, which can be disappointing if you're expecting much from other characters. The only plus to this is that Zuko's supporting characters are incredibly interesting, and the lore of the fire nation doubly so.Overall, this is an amazing book and I will continue to look forward to purchasing future avatar series comics.

The library editions are the way to go for these Avatar additions! These books are hard cover with a mix of matte and glossy finish. They're all larger books (think the size of a game guide.) The art inside is top notch (as expected) and includes some thoughts from the creators on the side panels. The back includes step by step process art for characters and cover art.Smoke and Shadow, specifically, focuses on Zuko after he has become emperor and the rising tensions between the fire nation proper and long conquered fire nation territories that identify with being Earth nation. A new threat has popped up throughout the Fire Nation where children are being snatched from their homes. Zuko and Aang must find and cut off this threat before the people of the Fire Nation depose Zuko.Of the 4 library editions, this compilation has been my least favorite, but that in no way means that I thought the story was anything less than excellent. I encourage all Avatar fans to read these if they want to continue journeying with Aang and see how the world of Korra is created.

I jumped on the Avatar train way too late and binged all three seasons. Afterwards, I thought I had had enough, but I was intrigued by the availability of a comic book series. I was a bit tentative at first because the show was so good and I didn't want my opinion of the show to go down, but the books have made me even more of a fan. The story has the same tone of the show, and the artwork is amazing. I love how Gurihiru is able to capture the different bending styles.After finishing this volume, I couldn't wait to start "The Search"!

I love this book. After binge watching all three seasons of Avatar: The Last Airbender with my family, I was seriously missing the gang...most of all, Aang. I kept wondering why they didn't make more seasons and wishing that I could find more stories of Aang after the series ended. I am so glad that I came across the Avatar: The Last Airbender books. The illustrations are beautiful and the dialogue is on point with the characters. I read this book with my boys almost every night before bedtime. It makes us feel like we're back in their world, though I personally still miss hearing their actual voices. I am definitely going to get the other books in this set and highly recommend this book.

This is the first issue of a great series! Off to a slow start, the drawings get better as the story goes, as well as the dialogue. As a matter of fact the second issue features many moments that seem like they come straight out of the show. If you love the series, I highly recommend these comics.The comic series is broken up to 3 issues per storyline. I found this first storyline to be kind of like the author just getting their feet wet in the Avatar universe. The second story, The Search, is where it really starts to get good. But I still recommend the Promise just so you can be treated to Toph's Metal Bending school. It's perfect! There are also some other story elements that you might be sorry you missed if you skip ahead.And, I know it's noted elsewhere, but the creators of the show work closely with the creation of this series as well.
