This book is written to singles contemplating marriage, to a good partner! It is written by a Christian husband and father using principles from the Bible as a guide.WHAT READERS CAN LEARN FROM THIS BOOK1. If you seek first God's kingdom and His righteousness (Matthew 6:33) and let this principle undergird your decision regarding whom you choose to marry and refuse to compromise on that, you will increase the likelihood of a much more fulfilling, spiritually enriching, and overall more satisfying marriage.2. Being "in love" is not a reliable criterion for marrying someone. Women are more likely to experience romantic love with dominant men, even though dominant men typically demonstrate less ability to express the kind of companionship, relational skills, and emotional attachment that women ultimately desire in a lifelong mate. If you simply follow your feelings, you are more likely fall in love with a guy who will thrill you for twelve to eighteen months as a boyfriend and then frustrate you for five to six decades as a husband.3. The average life span of infatuation is two years. The author recommends a couple not get engaged less than one year before meeting because infatuation has to run its course in order to really get to know a person, including his or her weaknesses, before getting married. Discerning a person's true character, values, and suitability for marriage is hard work that takes time, counsel, and a healthy dose of skepticism. Brain scans of people together for 28 months showed a more realistic view of their partner than those together for 8 months.4. Our culture embraces the mistaken notion that there is only one specific person who can complete us, and we will know who that person is by the intense feelings we have. Conversely, the Bible does not teach that there is only one right person for you. Instead, it teaches that there are wise and unwise choices, and that a man should search for a woman of virtuous character (Proverbs 31:10). Desirable traits include (but are not limited to) industriousness (31:13, 19, 22), compassion for others (31:20), a good reputation (31:28, 29, 31), and, most importantly, having reverence for the Lord (31:30). Most married Christian women desire their husbands to be godly, to have a good sense of humor, to be an involved dad, and to have a strong work ethic, among other traits.5. A single person should become involved in social situations where they are more likely to meet a qualified marriage partner, such as church, work, or introductions through family and friends.6. Relationships are unstable when they are based upon (6.1) romantic idealism, (6.2) physical attraction, or (6.3) domination of one by the other. (6.1) If you're a romantic idealist, you're going to become very disappointed when your partner focuses on his business or hobby. (6.2) A marriage based primarily on mutual physical attraction is a shaky foundation, because marriage is about growing old together more than it is about being young together. A passionate partnership can seem intimately intense and satisfying when two people enjoy it, and suffocating when just one of them wants it. (6.3) Some people become interested in a relationship only when they are terrorized by or are terrorizing their partner, for reasons often related to past wounds and bent personalities. These couples fight, argue, make each other miserable and afraid, and may even have vigorous makeup sex. Exhausted and spent, they peacefully coexist for another short season until routine sets in and they start the horror cycle all over again. These people need to get healed before they get married.7. The author believes you should never marry a person who is highly arrogant, is unwilling to forgive, or expresses anger with physical violence.8. A complementarian marriage is one in which the husband leads by being a loving servant (Ephesians 5:22-32).9. Compatibility is about having the most important things in common. Prior to marriage, dating couples should respect and appreciate their partner's personality and character. Morally, the Bible prohibits sex outside marriage (I Corinthians 6:15-20). Neuro-chemically, sex before marriage bonds two people through the outpouring of oxytocin before they can properly test and evaluate each other's character. Sexual intimacy will cloud a person's judgment about their partner. If they see something about their partner's behavior or character that gives them pause, they will be inclined to continue with the relationship because of their sexual bond10. Design some dates specifically to reveal each other's character. Going to the movies, biking through the park, and eating out may produce a certain level of affection, but it doesn't tell you how a man would face a medical crisis, what kind of courage a woman has, what values each person lives by, or what spiritual pursuit drives the other person. You can find out your date's true character by paying attention to how he or she treats people.11. Pornography is destructive because it teaches wrong information about women, that they like to do certain things and act in certain ways that they really do not. Porn trains men to bond with the images of many women's bodies in general, but not to bond with one woman (as a whole person) in particular.12. Never marry someone just because you have been having sex with him or her, or because you feel sorry for that person, or because you want your search for a marriage partner to be over.

This book was suggested to me as the best time. I was in a relationship for a year and a half. Engaged, looking at houses, already bought my dress but was not feeling the excitement a bride should feel. There were red flags but I thought surely our love will overcome. 5 months before the wedding. I called it of as I began to read the book.within two weeks he was already dating someone else. I was hurt at how quickly I was replaced but relieved that I didn't marry him. Today marks a yr since the breakup and I finally sat down and finished the book. My life is fuller because I learned not just from the relationship and what God c showed me but I learned from this book as well...I recommended it to ask my single and dating friends.. God bless

This book has blessed my soul in so many ways. It was a gift to me from my son, 18 at the time, and being a single Christian that was currently back in the rat race of dating, this book has caused me to "pump the breaks" and to get and put things into its proper perspective. I don't have many conversations with friends, family or stranger before this book is mentioned. I recommend it for singles, parents of teens, youth ministers, counselors, and even some married folk... Unfortunately, I feel Gary Thomas should send me royalties...not because I've promote this wonderful book to nearly everyone that I come in conversation with, but because it seems like he merely changed the names in several of the examples mentioned when he could've just said my name for a ton of the examples... Thank you Gary for sharing...I only wish you could've written it 30 years ago but your book has blessed several lives in my family... I will be using this book in my church life group that I lead.

Trying to find a book of real substance in the Christian Living section at the bookstore can be more challenging than finding a Young Adult novel that doesn’t include a post-dystopian, star-crossed, vampire couple dying from cancer. When my eyes fell upon The Sacred Search by Gary Thomas my initial reaction was, “Oh, fantastic. Another Christian dating advice book. I swear if I hear the word courtship one more time I will become a eunuch!” Okay, maybe not.But seriously, I’ve read dozens of Christian dating books and very few have ever made much of an impact. Many of them lack real depth and are often very “me” focused. I was ready to move on to another shelf when a couple things caught my eye about this one.First off, I’m a big fan of the author, Gary Thomas. If you’re unfamiliar with Thomas, he’s penned many thoughtful books on marriage, parenting, and spiritual formation. Second, the tagline intrigued me, “What if it’s not about who you marry, but why?” I knew I had to give it a read.
Thomas charitably dispels a lot of the common myths of Christian dating and marriage. He gives thoughtful, practical advice for the “sacred search” while never losing focus of the bigger picture which he believes is summed up perfectly in Matthew 6:33, “Seek ye first the kingdom of God, and his righteousness; and all these things shall be added unto you.”In addition to be a husband and father for many years, Thomas has counseled countless couples, and unfortunately, watched many of them end in divorce. While there’s no exact formula to avoid divorce, he points out the common pitfalls people stumble into when selecting a spouse. His tone is always candid, direct, and conversational. His wisdom and maturity shines through in way that many other authors lack. And his advice is useful no matter where you currently are in life - single, in a relationship, or already married. Some of my favorite chapters included:The Religious Romance Lottery“…God will bring the right person to me at the right time. I’ll just sit back and wait” Yeah. Right. Because sitting around is usually the best way to guarantee something amazing will happen in your life. For some reason we think that it’s different with relationships and I’ll admit that I have been guilty of the same logic. But Thomas encourages readers to look beyond praying and waiting. Start living with intention, walk towards the music, and pursue love.Soul Mate or Sole Mate?I feel this one ties closely to the idea of same thought as Romance Lottery. Many people believe there is the “One” person whom God has predestined to be their spouse. It’s a romantic notion. But there’s a danger in this mindset since the only One we are truly destined for is our Lord. What You Don’t Know Really Can Hurt YouHe explores the impact of personal history, particularly how our sexual history can affect our relationships. He attempts to address all of the other baggage that growing up in post-sexual revolution culture brings with it.Other chapters break down the common marriage styles, helping the reader to do a little introspection and consider what’s really important in a relationship. It’s not about finding someone who is exactly like you, but someone who is compatible. There is a whole chapter dedicated to the importance of mutually agreed upon gender roles. It’s an issue that can completely derail a relationship, especially in Christian circles, if not agreed upon.He is also unafraid to address the raw, biological forces that come into play with attraction and romance. Too many pastors, Christian psychologists, and writers foolishly shy away from this topic. While he isn’t a scientist, I admire his willingness to recognize and discuss the significance biology plays in affection and love.I could go on and on since this book is full of little gold nuggets but you should check it for yourself. It’s quick, yet powerful read.

From School Library Journal

Grade 7 Up–Jason is a smart 15-year-old, an agnostic-leaning-toward-atheism, who resists following in the footsteps of his devoutly Catholic father. Getting clocked under the water tower by the nasty and unpredictable Henry leads Jason and his friend Shin to combine their talents to posit a new religion. "Chutengodianism" sanctifies water, the source of all life, as manifested by the Ten-Legged God, aka that same million-gallon water tower. Creating the creed on the fly, Jason soon gathers a handful of acolytes, including his former nemesis. Their midnight pilgrimage to the top of the tower for worship transmutes into an impromptu baptism when Henry hacksaws through the padlock. Their swim rouses sexy thoughts about Magda, stripped to her panties and bra, balanced soon after by panic when it seems they might be trapped. Regaining the top of the tank, Henry slips and sustains severe injuries crashing onto a catwalk below. Fortunately for him, the authorities have already arrived. The Church is busted and the faithful face new trials and temptations. These are fun, wacky, interesting characters. While chuckling aloud may be common in the early chapters, serious issues dominate the latter stages of the book. The rivalry between Jason and Henry for the attentions of Magda, Jason's unrepentant certainty that doing what he sees as right is more important than following his parents' rules, and Shin's apparent continued belief in the tenets he helped create are thought-provoking and disturbing. Jason is left to ponder the meaning of a religion that has only himself as a member.–Joel Shoemaker, Southeast Junior High School, Iowa City, IA Copyright © Reed Business Information, a division of Reed Elsevier Inc. From Booklist

*Starred Review* Gr. 7-10. Hautman knows how to project a voice. In Sweetblood, (2003), the voice was that of a diabetic who felt a kinship with vampires. Here, the voice belongs to a disaffected 16-year-old, Jason Block, who decides to invent a new religion with a new god--the town's water tower. Finding converts is surprisingly easy. His small group includes his twitchy friend Shin, a self-styled scribe who is writing the new testament (snippets enticingly appear at the beginning of each chapter), and Henry, a bully who undergoes changes when he is named high priest of the "Chutengodians." In a smartly structured narrative that is by turns funny, worried, and questioning, Jason watches as his once-cohesive little congregation starts wanting to "worship" in its own ways, some of them deadly. Not everything works here. Shin's meltdown doesn't seem real, even though it has been thoroughly foreshadowed. But most scenes are honest and true to the bone, such as the one in which Jason and Harry agree that their dangerous stunts are worth their weight in memories. Anyone who has questioned his or her religion, especially as a teenager, will respond to Jason's struggles with belief. Many individuals, upon reading this, will consider their own questions once more. Ilene CooperCopyright © American Library Association. All rights reserved

The first Pete Hautman book I read was THE MORTAL NUTS. It was one in a series of offbeat mysteries, featuring Joe Crow, a former cocaine addict and reluctant P.I. It was set at the Minnesota State Fair. I loved it. After reading most of the others in the series, plus a few more literary efforts, I was dismayed to find Hautman had abandoned the humorous/mystery market for the young adult novel. I was even more surprised to find he'd won the National Book Award for one of them. Anyway I thought I'd read GODLESS to see if the irreverent humor I loved so much translated to a new genre. I'm of two minds. I absolutely love the idea. Just about every intelligent kid questions his religion at one time or another, so there's certainly grist for the mill. It's just that these characters didn't come alive for me like Axel and his friends in Mortal Nuts (a poker term, meaning you've got an unbeatable hand). Some of them are way over the top. In response to his father's steadfast belief in the Catholic church, Jason Bock creates his own, the Chutengodians, who worship the town water tower. Jason sees himself as an agnostic moving towards becoming an atheist, and he's trying to show that his new, made-up religion is no more outlandish than some of the others. But soon the idea gets out of hand and some of his followers take the whole thing seriously. In other words, Hautman has written sort of a young adult satire, which may have appealed to the National Book Award voters. The plot isn't much. They climb the tower and swim around in it. They get caught. Jason spends time in jail. The two characters who take things to extremes are Henry Stagg and Peter "Shin" Schinner. Stagg, a little bully who loves science fiction, soon splits off from the main group and forms his own religion (sound familiar?). Shin, a cerebral fellow with an unhealthy attachment to gastropods (snails), becomes a Chutengodian zealot, going so far as to write his own Genesis (used as chapter headings). (...)

This is a fun, bouncy tale of teen alienation and a novel way to create a sense of belonging, all with a great Hautman spin. Had I read this as a teen I'd have absolutely identified with the boredom, the quest for engagement and the desire to be a part of an in group. You can definitely read this in one sitting and the pacing is incredibly quick. Everyone gets their due and no one category of people (parents, kids. police) is made a specific scapegoat.I'd strongly recommend this for any one who has "nothing to do" this summer. It is a memorable summer vacation read.

In a brilliantly authored book for young adults, Schmidt introduces a basic American Concept. Freedom of religion! The right is protected, but for one young man it is not being honored. As an atheist, the protagonist holds the view that all religion was "all made up." So, he decides to invent his own. It does not matter that the object of their religious fervor is a water tower. It is specifically chosen because it is so unGodlike.Yet, the story develops as all religious stories develop; with a concept, and a following. Jason does build a small following for his religion, yet it gets him virtually nothing but trouble. Yet he insists on going forward, despite the pressure from those who are not interested in his creation of a new religion.Perhaps one of the most interesting characters of all is Shin. Shin, a close friend of Jason, becomes enamoured with the religion to the point that he starts writing a gospel of the religion. He actually hears the water tower speak to him and has recorded it. He has many, many pages of the gospel of the new religion transcribed, as he says, the "Tower speaks to me, I hear it inside my head."Yet through all the troubles and travails, there is a persistence that Jason displays and in his mind; and the minds of most of his followers, he has prevailed. Even if it has to be sub rosa, as those around do not accept even the discussion of the topic, it is still his rite. He is still entitled to do it, in America. The book is highly recommended for all people over the age of 13. It is especially illustrative of a phenomenon repeated all over the world many times. The book cites Joseph Smith's Church of Latter Day Saints and L. Ron Hubbard's Church of Scientology, but does not dwell at all on their philosophies, just mentions them as new religions. And in how many places aside from America, are citizens free to do this? Not many at all.

Godless was a great book about a boy named Jason Bock and his summer vacation he spent with his friends. In the first chapter of the book you come on to three characters: the main character Jason but also his best friend Shin (Peter Stephen Schinner). Henry is a boy who likes to always make trouble, he is the kid that there always is in a story that grew up in a bad environment and loves to pick fights. But shin on the other hand is totally different, he is very quiet and shy, and when ever he gets mad or embarrassed he does what the author explained as "going into his shell" and wouldn't talk or anything. In the first scene of the book you find three of the biggest characters in the biggest seen in the books, but for now Jason and shin are searching for snails in this place under the water tower. When henry comes around and punches Jason in the gut. This book is strongly based on Jason and his religion and how he takes it to a whole new level. But it starts out about his Christian religion and how he doesn't believe in god, so he makes up his own beliefs and even his own religion known as "the Chutengodians" and worship the water tower in the center of the town known as " the ten legged one". His two other friends in the book are cute as a button Magda Price and Dan Grant that normal nothing-special friend that every one has. But as this religion gets bigger so does the danger. Especially at the first meeting when they plan to climb to the top of the tower.

Werner's Nomenclature of Colours: Adapted to Zoology, Botany, Chemistry, Mineralogy, Anatomy, and the Arts, by Patrick Syme

About the Author

Abraham Gottlob Werner (1749-1817) was a mineralogist and geologist at the mining school in Freiberg, Saxony. In his 1774 book On the External Characteristics of Fossils, he established a classification system to describe the colors of both fossils and minerals. Patrick Syme (1774-1845), an Edinburgh painter and art teacher, reconstructed Werner's colors by consulting actual minerals, paired the hues with examples from plant and animal life, and created the system of color swatches and descriptions that form the basis of this book.

Having held a copy of an original Syme's 1821 in Kansas City many years ago I was excited to have a copy in my office. And since it was Smithsonian I was doubly excited since I figured it would be really nice. The color swatches in the book are dull approximations of the original. This is particularly evident on the blues page where Verditter, Greenish & Grayish blue are so close as to appear the same. I thought perhaps I was romanticising my memory so I sought out a comparison.Attached are screenshots from the Linda Hall Archive (where I first saw the original) and a photo from the Smithsonian reproduction. There is a world of difference with the Smithsonian colors all having a muted grayish cast. So sad. And odd: with the improvement of printing technology there's no reason this can't be spot-on.If you want this for the descriptive language and historical aspects buy it. If you want to see the magnificence of Sym's original tints go online.

This beautiful little book is much better than most of the historic reproductions in my collection. It comes with a very well manufactured hard cover. and a ribbon bookmark. I enjoyed reading the descriptions of the mineral, animal, and plant specimens that typify the colors. I can't really use this book today for the same purpose that Charles Darwin did in his day, but if we recognize that we are treated to a rare look at a two-century old color book in near perfect condition, the muting of colors by time can be forgiven. As an artist and professional naturalist myself, I found myself making mental comparisons of the color swatches and found many wanting. The whites are now all shades of tan. Veinous blood red is presented here as black, and Sulphur yellow is far too green. As much as we might wish for the original vibrancy of the colors to show through, two hundred years have passed since the original colors were mixed with a carrier and applied to paper. Its a rare artwork that stays true to its original colors for that long, because organic pigments fade and both oil mediums and paper discolor. Knowing all this, I'd still buy it over for the pleasure of an evening reading.

I bought this book after seeing the beautiful hues online. However, the colors in the book look as though every square was gone over with a wash of grey. Look at the "snow-white"!. I am disappointed with this book and the colors.

Oh my goodness!!!!..This is an exquisite reproduction of what must have been amazing notebooks and journals... Its a look into the past with lyrical AND acurate descriptions of the colors around us.. Its not necessarily a reference book for people searching for that “certain shade of blue”....but more an inspirational tome and a dive into Darwins ( and other explorers) efforts to describe the world around them. SPECTACULAR BINDING!

It's lovely. It is not a reference type book with authoritative color representation, but it's quite charming and historic.

how lucky we are the smithsonian rescued this book and reproduced it. your inner poet is going to love it. i bought two copies. one to keep for my own inner poet and another to give to my sister who thrives on color. we both thrive on historical artifacts and this book has it in spades. yes, the book took some time to get here because i suspect the publisher wasn't prepared for the mad rush when everyone started sharing a link to the book on facebook. i know six other people who ordered the book the same day i ordered two copies. i suspect it will sell out.

I did not know this existed until someone mentioned that they were publishing this work. It's an interesting journal. I've been using it to improve how I describe color when I write creatively. I'm completely I'm love with it.

Beautiful historic book that is the same as the one used by Darwin on the HMS Beagle to guide him in color identification.
