As I progress through life, and accept that I'm not young any more, I also realize that the younger generations do not ingest books the way I do. If you look at the reviews for this book, especially at the 1 and 2 star ratings, you'll find a deplorable pattern. "It was too slow." No, you're not considering what you're reading. "The author is a racist." Definitely no, he's almost drawing a caricature of them to shine a great big spotlight on facism and bigotry in order to persuade the audience of just how evil these things are. "The ending was too abrupt." or "He obviously meant to write a sequel." No and no. After many thousands of words placed in thought provoking ways, the author challenges the audience to decide what the story means. And gives us license to pick the ending that we think fits the best.This story was written in the 60s, and is set then as well. What if the Axis won World War II is the major premise behind the setting. The conflicts highlight the extreme to which Japanese and German cultures could have gone, and the possible effects of living in a land under the control of one, and strongly influenced by the other. Imagine the Japanese concept of place, mixing with facist bigotry, overlaid on oppressed Americans living in a totalitarian world. PKD thoroughly denounces facism, bigotry and xenophobia.But the story is more than that. The plot is hidden from the reader as we see events from several points of view. And the narration ends with barely a paragraph of denouement. If you are not driven to contemplation about the meaning of life or the nature of reality by this work, you should read it again, slowly.

I was putting off buying this due to it having reviews like "confusing ending" however when watched the series on Amazon I was amazed and stunned at the same time. And i figured with all books and movies/tv adaptations the book is always better.We always see the commercials on tv for the what 'ifs' about history what if the Nazis won the war whats if World War II ended entirely different. We don't know for sure how this would actually have turned out but PKD offers some amazing insight to what it would have been like.Each character has there own unique persona and unique motives for what they are really out to get. Every character is masterfully developed. PKD doesn't just focus on the character's PKD is able to fully capture you imagination and create a beautifully horrid reality inside your mind as you read.This is one of the books that you will read reread and still be wondering about what truly happened or what the book was really about. One of the most complex and inciting books I have read and loved so deeply in a long time. Overall if you like alternative-history or books with complex backgrounds and amazing story's you should be sure to read this.

One of the greatest novels of th 20th century. I've been a PKD fan since the early 1980's, obsessively collecting his work, most of which at the time was out of print. It's safe to say that no person did more to shape my intellectual development as a teenager than Philip K. Dick. I am forever in his debt.That said, TMitHC is a treasure. It distills a number of Dick's obsessions into a taut character study set against the backdrop of a world going even more mad. Each of the 6 'protagonists' here are searching for truth. Only a couple of them are capable of facing it dignity.As with all of Dick's best work the world-building is efficient and brilliant. I re-read this recently to prepare myself for watching the new serial, and was reminded of just how good Dick's prose is. The casual racism of Mr. Childan, the inner strength of Juliana, the coldness of Joe Cinnadella. But, it is Mr. Tagomi who owns this novel. He is one of Dick's finest characters, at once pragmatic and idealistic. Mature and naive. The living embodiment of the Tao.The ending matters both textually and thematically. It separates the characters into those who can face the reality of their world and those who cannot.For those looking into PKD for the first time I highly recommend these books over all of the others (in my order of preference):1) Ubik2) Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep3) The Man in the High Castle4) Flow My Tears, the Policeman Said5) The Three Stigmata of Palmer Eldritch6) Clans of the Alphane Moon7) A Scanner Darkly8) Martian Time-Slip9) Dr. Bloodmoney10) The Transmigration of Timothy ArcherOthers like Time Out of Joint, The Game-Players of Titan, Now Wait for Last Year, The Penultimate Truth and Galactic Pot Healer are fine diversions, but the books above are essential. I had a strong reality with the author. I was an Armenian kid growing up in the suburbs of NYC during the 50’s and 60’s. I now live In Hackensack NJ the next town over from Teaneck. I really could relate. The second half of the book segues into the facts, timeline and the people involved in the horrific effort to wipe out all the Armenians. Very good read about a suppressed period of history. The reason for the suppression is also explained in a very human and passionate way.

I'm only about halfway through this riveting book. As a first generation Armenian American born of two parents who were Armenian, I can relate to quite a number of memories that the author writes about. My parents also spoke very little about their lives in Armenia, so I find this book to be compelling in helping me understand their thoughts.

Peter Balakian's memoir is memorable not only for its poetic and heart-moving prose, but for its movement from boyhood memories of a secure Armenian home to the unspeakable atrocities of the Armenian Genocide. From his keen and sensitive perspective we learn just how far away his gentle, peaceful home in New Jersey was from the Armenian home of his ancestral family where genocide was perpetrated by the Turks against the Armenians. And, yet, how close it remained--and remains forever--in the silent recesses of his family's lives. Even in his own life. The way Balakian creates a seamless narrative in the telling of his experience owes a lot to the sublime poetry of his prose. As a result we experience the forces of a protective, loving environment as well as the extremities of the most severe brutalities of the human condition.

Author has a talent for descriptive and humorous writing. Just started reading the book, and thoroughly enjoying it. Will give it as gifts to my Armenian friends who share a similar history. I can smell the baking choerag.

The story of a family's struggle and survival through a genocide which is still denied by many. Uplifting and heartbreaking, a chapter of history which deserves to be brought to light. This would make a wonderful short television series.

Excellent. Once I started to read, I couldn't put it down.Balakian's grandmother reminds me of my own. The experiences they had left wounds that never healed.

This is an amazing and poignant depiction of a typical Armenian family. The family could belong to anyone--it certainly could be mine. Without giving away the entire story, it is about genocide survivors who protect their children from the events of the genocide. Eventually, the stories are told and the truth is known, thereby changing the lives of the children. It is an emotionally difficult book to read, but is well worth it.

In the Bible you read out all the different kings that were around during this time and you have to jump back and forth between a couple of books in order to get the full story. With this book, it tells the story in an easy to follow format and it clears up the confusion that jumping back and forth creates. I have read these stories in the Bible many times and found this book to be a delight to read. I highly recommend this book especially if you want to add this to your devotional time.

This was an interesting read. Reading the Bible, unless you write down the timeline, it gets confusing trying to keep the kings of Israel and Judah straight in your mind. This little book helps, because it puts all that information together in a straight, simple line. Easier to understand the events in the lives of the kings.

A condensed version of the line of Kings of Israel & Judah. Short and sweet, hitting on most of the main highlights of the history. By no means a concordance to the Bible but a starting point!

I really loved this book. It was really easy to follow along and got right to the point on each chapter. You could tell it was well researched. I have read the Bible and with that it's so hard to follow along but with this book you really won't have that problem. And it goes through their life. I would recommend this book to anyone wanting to learn about the kings of Israel and Judah.

Good condition. Great gift for a friend.

This book is a major overhaul of the earlier Digital Web book for Mage: The Ascension. It has lots of little detail-ey improvements over the first edition, and some nice thoughtful material about games in the web, and storytelling in general. I'm not sure I'd encourage anyone to buy it if they had the eariler edition, unless they're obsessed with running games in the Web. But a modern Mage game ought to have *some* Digital Web in it, and if you don't have any verion of this book, I highly reccomend it. Also hs plenty of cool terminology and saucy web culture tidbits, and an interesting piece of history on the "recent crash" of the Web.
