One of Nora Roberts best ventures into paranormal...vampires, witches, sorcerers, warriors...Morrigan's Cross has it all. I loved the setting, different time periods, plot, and most of all, the characters. Hoyt & Cian are brothers - one a sorcerer & one a vampire - together again after centuries apart. They gather a circle of six special members to face the battle of a lifetime, with little chance of winning. This book delivers intrigue, suspense, romance, love, and hope and does it beautifully. While the ending is satisfying, you will have to read all 3 books to get answers to all the questions & scenarios in Morrigan's Cross. This is book 1 of a trilogy.

The plot drags on a bit and you have to read about 2/3rds of it before it really gets interesting. The next two books are more interesting by comparison. Nora Roberts has quite the imagination for writing, however, I struggle with knowing who is doing the talking in the dialogues. I suspect she does her own editing. I found a lot of grammatical errors in her writing and I feel that she should hire an editor to enhance the reader's experience. It is difficult to understand the author's message at times with all the errors. I certainly wouldn't consider any of her books I've read so far to be literary masterpieces, but she certainly comes up with some interesting plots. However, with the trilogies, there is a noticeable and familiar pattern involving the six characters or circle of 6 main characters who will save the world. Of that, you can be sure.

I really liked this entire trilogy. I have just been "introduced" to Nora Roberts' books by a friend who loaned me a different novel. After reading it, I looked into more of her books and came upon this trilogy (and promptly bought all 3 books). It was a good, quick read that was well written but not overly in-depth. I typically enjoy fantasy books, like George RR Martin, Tolkein, Robert Jordan, etc. So this was a bit simpler, to be honest, but a nice read to relax after a day of work or errands.

Past, future, present day; all is blended to forge a circle of faith, friends, and warriors to battle for all that is good. A sorcerer, a witch, a warrior, one of many forms, and one who was lost are brought together too form an army to battle Lilith, the first vampire. Can they become a cohesive unit despite their differences? Join them as they face their fears, tragedy, doubt, and love to accomplish the task set for them by the goddess. This is a great book masterfully written by Nora Roberts. One of her best!!

When I started reading this book I was surprised about the subject. I wasn't sure if I should continue to read it. The story of vampires was not my usual stories. But after I read for a while I got interested - a witch, a sorcerer, a shape shifter, a queen, a warrior, and a nice vampirer, and different worlds. And I was sad when the book ended. So now on to the second book of circle trilogy. Please forgive my spelling.

I have read Nora Roberts books for years and got used to her romantic novels. So while on vacation in Mexico and having finished all the books that I bought, I wondered to a local shop that had some American paperbacks. I picked up the "Dance of the God's" because I knew her name, not realizing that it was book 2 of a trilogy. Expecting the usual romance from Roberts, I was shocked to find myself in the middle of a magical and brutal war between humans and vampires. I read the "Dance" probably in 1-2 days and couldn't wait to get my hands on the 1st and 3rd books which proved to be just as good.I sooooo wish there was a movie made from these books because I could see it all in my head. The time travel, the magic, the love, the great battles. I'm surprised that no studios picked it up as the next big trilogy to produce. It begs for it and has the substance to back it up.Love Nora's writing style and how she really dives into the ancient rituals and mythology of old Ireland. She also ensures that the reader gets a good understanding of how each of the character's talents are valuable, despite their varying backgrounds and fears. I could see the movie in my mind while reading her books which is a true sign of a good author. I really wish that I had a production company to put this trilogy into theaters. I think it would beat Lord of the Rings!!!

I have read this story and have now listened to it as well. My opinion has only gotten better. The narrator is fabulous. In this first part Hoyt goes through the events that have just happened. He is then given direction from the Goddess Morrigan what is needing to be done to prepare for the coming fight to save the worlds from Lilith.

I love a good read, one that grabs you from the get go. Can't wait to turn the page, chapter after chapter. The characters Come alive and you become a part if the story. I'm going to force myself up to go complete my chores for the day. I already have the next book ready to read. Book 2 of the trilogy.

How They Croaked: The Awful Ends of the Awfully Famous, by Georgia Bragg Kevin O'Malley

From Booklist

*Starred Review* From George Little Mouth of Horrors Washington to Marie You Glow, Girl Curie, Bragg chronicles with ghoulish glee the chronic or fatal maladies that afflicted 19 historical figures. Nonsqueamish readers will be entranced by her riveting descriptions of King Tuts mummification (and the brutal treatment that mummy has received in modern times); the thoroughly septic doctoring that hastened or at least contributed to the deaths of Mozart, Napoleon, James A. Garfield, and others; the literal dissolution of Henry VIIIs body (While lying in state, it is believed that his toxic remains exploded, and some of his royal splendidness dripped out the sides of the coffin overnight); and the outrageous fates of Einsteins brain, Galileos fingers, and other coroners souvenirs. The author tucks quick notes on at least marginally relevant topics, such as leeching, scurvy, presidential assassins, and mummy eyes (If mummy eyeballs are rehydrated, they return to almost normal size), between the chapters and closes with generous lists of nontechnical print resources on each of her subjects. OMalleys cartoon portraits and spot art add just the right notes of humor to keep the contents from becoming too gross. Usually. Despite occasional farfetched claimsits hard to believe that Charles Darwin puked four million times, even though he was fanatical about keeping personal health recordsthis all-too-informative study deserves the wild popularity it will without doubt acquire. Grades 5-8. --John Peters

Review

“O'Malley's cartoon portraits and spot art add just the right notes of humor to keep the contents from becoming too gross. This all-too-informative study deserves the wild popularity it will without doubt acquire.” ―Booklist, starred review“The most reluctant of readers will find it difficult to resist this consistently disgusting chronicle of the gruesome deaths of 19 will famous people. Bragg's informal, conversational style and O'Malley's cartoon illustrations complement the flippant approach to the subject; the energetically icky design includes little skulls and crossbones to contain page numbers. Engaging, informative and downright disgusting.” ―Kirkus“Bragg holds forth on nineteen Big Names whose demises have raised eyebrows, questions, and probably a few lunches... Carried away on a swift-flowing stream of body fluids, medical ineptitude, and O'Malley's deliciously snarky artwork, kids will agree they got exactly what they came for.” ―BCCB

My soon-to-be 8 year old daughter has a bit of a macabre streak -- she saw this book at the mall and immediately put it on her birthday list. The rest of the family thought it a bit odd, but this IS the same girl that carries around a skeleton doll for the entire month of October...'How They Croaked' goes further than just describing the "How" of the way some famous folks' lives ended -- there's also quite a bit of insight into some of the other medical issues they fought. And it doesn't just end at death... the book also reveals some surprising stories about missing body parts, thievery, etc. I learned quite a bit having it read aloud from the backseat during a roadtrip! Note: The book doesn't mince words when it comes to slicing, dicing and decomposing, so you can also expect this to lead to more conversations about anatomy, etc. Heed the notice at the beginning that says "If you don't have the guts for gore, do not read this book."The publisher listed the book as appropriate for ages 10 to 14, but even at 8, my daughter was okay with it. YMMV. You'll definitely get used to hearing "Ewwwwww! Hey, did you know __________?"

I bought this for my son the summer after 5th grade when he was 11 (it was one of the options for him to pick from a required reading list for 6th grade). He's a slow reader so he doesn't enjoy reading much, but he liked this book. The great thing about this book is that it's made up of many short stories rather than long chapters. The stories are very brief summaries of the lives and deaths of famous people like King Tut, Henry VIII, Christopher Columbus, Albert Einstein, and Edgar Allan Poe. There's a total of 19 famous people listed in the Table of Contents. This book was easy for my son to read without feeling overwhelmed because each mini story is only about 5-7 pages.Plus I enjoyed the facts he shared with me each time he read about someone.I have friends whose 10-11 year olds are reading the Twilight series of books. My son would have a panic attack if he had to read a 500+ page book. Granted, he'll eventually need to get used to the idea of reading big books as school progresses, but for now this is good for him.

Looks creepy BUT it's a GREAT book. Bought it for my 10 year old daughter. It doesn't focus only on how they died. It gives them facts about who that person was sms what they did that made them famous for example Mozart. My daughter loved it. My doctor bought it for her daughter as well.

Poor George Washington!! It's pretty unbelievable to see how the "normal medical practices" of their day actually added to these famous people's demise! Sometimes I wonder if that has changed much! I liked the book & have given it to 3 to 4 people already!! It amazes me how many people will do WHATEVER their Dr. says!!

The book arrived a day early which is always nice. My son had to have it for school. I read most of it in about 2 hours before I gave it to him. Pretty darn interesting book.

While a very interesting book in of itself, it doesn’t go into quite as much detail (gory or otherwise) as other books do. For morbid middle schoolers, this is the perfect book. Anyone older than 15 (and who can stomach it) would probably enjoy ‘Rest In Pieces’ by Bess Lovejoy just a tad bit more.

My rising 7th grader is required to read a fiction and non-fiction book during the summer and write book reports on them both. Since my son loves Doctor Oz, CSI, ID Network, and similar programs I figured he would be interested in this book as a non-fiction option. I was right. He finished this book in 3 day and was so excited to tell me how past icons lived and died. I even read it. Good book.

Bought for my son, he had started to read it in class and the school year ended so I ordered it so he could finish. Love that he shares the facts and it’s written to ware he is interested and wants to know more!
