Review

"[Automating Inequality's] argument is that the use of automated decision-making in social service programs creates a "digital poorhouse" that perpetuates the kinds of negative moral judgments that have always been attached to poverty in America...Eubanks proposes a Hippocratic oath for data scientists, whereby they would vow to respect all people and to not compound patterns of discrimination." ―The New York Review of Books"Riveting (an accomplishment for a book on technology and policy). Its argument should be widely circulated, to poor people, social service workers and policymakers, but also throughout the professional classes. Everyone needs to understand that technology is no substitute for justice.” ―The New York Times Book Review"A brilliant book about how we penalize poverty. It would make a great pairing with Evicted." ―Barbara Fister, Inside Higher Ed"An important book." ―Pacific Standard"Investigates three experiments in which algorithms are replacing or augmenting human decision-making in public assistance." ―Jacobin Magazine“Eubanks ably demonstrates why everyone should be very, very worried about the present and future of poverty management. Along with the personalized stories, her data exposes the political will, the ease of establishment and the ripe soil for letting cold math take our deepest biases and, in effect, render them into invisible cages for the most vulnerable.” ―NY Daily News"Eubanks's ability to combine beautiful biographic storytelling with keen observation and criticism makes this an indispensable addition to the literature on what Cathy O'Neil calls Weapons of Math Destruction" ―Cory Doctorow, Boing Boing"To call the stories and data Eubanks has collected infuriating feels like an understatement...marginalized people are often the first to face experiments in assessment and punishment through technological tools. ..What’s incisive about Automating Inequality is how it underscores the subtle ways technology is used to this end." ―New Republic"Powerful..." ―The Progressive"Eubanks takes a hard look at some of the seemingly agnostic―and even well-meaning technologies―that promise to make the U.S. welfare apparatus well-oiled and efficient." ―CityLab"Compelling." ―Kronket Media“Computing has long been perceived to be a culture-free zone―this needs to change. But change will only occur when policymakers and voters understand the true scale of the problem. This is hard when we live in an era that likes to celebrate digitisation―and where the elites are usually shielded from the consequences of those algorithms. Except, of course, when random accidents occur. In that sense, Eubanks’ tale is a chilling lesson to us all.” ―The Financial Times"[A] must read...On par with Barbara Ehrenreich’s Nickel and Dimed or Matthew Desmond’s Evicted. It’s rigorously researched, phenomenally accessible, and utterly humbling. While there are a lot of important books that touch on the costs and consequences of technology through case studies and well-reasoned logic, this book is the first one that I’ve read that really pulls you into the world of algorithmic decision-making and inequality, like a good ethnography should." ―danah boyd, author of It's Complicated"Eubanks says we manage the poor so we don’t have to eradicate poverty....Eubanks explores three very different and widely separated approaches to managing, manipulating and controlling the poor in Indiana, the homeless in Los Angeles, and the child welfare in Pittsburgh." ―San Francisco Review of Books"Eubanks argues that automated systems separate people from resources, classify and criminalize people, and invade privacy―and that these problems will affect everyone eventually, not just the poor. The book's final chapter offers strategies to dismantle the digital poorhouse." ―Booklist (starred review)"Eubanks's advocacy for the Americans impacted by this trend is passionate and matched by incisive analysis and bolstered by impressive research." ―Library Journal"This is the single most important book about technology you will read this year. Today everyone is worrying about the Internet’s impact on democracy, but Eubanks shows that the problems facing us run much deeper than “fake news”―automated systems entrench social and economic inequality by design and undermine private and public welfare. Eubanks dives into history and reports from the trenches, helping us better understand the political and digital forces we are up against so we can effectively fight back." ―Astra Taylor, author of The People's Platform: Taking Back Power and Culture in the Digital Age"Income inequality relies on the lie of the neutrality of efficiency over the value of our common humanity. Automating Inequality exposes the deadly consequences of this plan and suggests another path. That Virginia Eubanks is our guide―a person so capable, ethical and whipsmart―is a rare combination indeed." ―Adrian Nicole LeBlanc, author of Random Family"This book is downright scary―but with its striking research and moving, indelible portraits of life in the 'digital poorhouse,' you will emerge smarter and more empowered to demand justice." ―Naomi Klein, author of No Is Not Enough and This Changes Everything“This book is for all of us: community leaders, scholars, lawyers, recipients of government assistance, and anyone alive whose survival depends upon a better understanding of how nations made wealthy by digital industries are using technology to create and maintain a permanent underclass. It is a book for our times." ―Malkia A. Cyril, Executive Director and Co-founder, Center for Media Justice"Automating Inequality is one of the most important recent books for understanding the social implications of information technology for marginalized populations in the US . As we begin discussing the potential for AI to harm people, Eubanks's work should be required reading." ―Ethan Zuckerman, Director, Center for Civic Media, MIT"Startling and brilliant... As Eubanks makes crystal clear, automation coupled with the new technologies of ethical abandonment and instrumental efficiency threaten not only the lives of millions who are viewed as disposable but also democracy itself. If you want to understand how this digital nightmare is reaching deep into the institutions that attempt to regulate our lives, and how you can challenge it, this is a must read." ―Henry Giroux, McMaster University Professor for Scholarship in the Public Interest and the Paulo Freire Distinguished Scholar in Critical Pedagogy"Equal parts advocacy and analysis―a welcome addition to the growing literature around the politics of welfare." ―Kirkus Reviews"The most data is collected on the most marginalized groups...Eubanks' ethnography makes visible the politics behind our tools." ―Internetactu.net"In this remarkable chronicle of 'how the other half lives' in the age of automation, Eubanks uncovers a new digital divide―a totalizing web of surveillance ensnaring our most marginalized communities. This powerful, sobering, and humane book exposes the dystopia of data-driven policy and urges us to create a more just society for all." ―Alondra Nelson, author of The Social Life of DNA “In this illuminating book, Eubanks shows us that in spite of cosmetic reforms, our policies for the disadvantaged remain dominated by the ancient credo of the poor law, obsessed with the exclusion and punishment of the neediest in our communities.” ―Frances Fox Piven, author of Regulating the Poor"U.S. institutions from law enforcement to health care to social services increasing punish people- especially people of color - for being poor. Automating Inequality powerfully exposes how secret, high-tech monitoring systems facilitate this injustice. A must-read for everyone concerned about modern tools of inequality in America." ―Dorothy Roberts, author of Killing the Black Body and Shattered Bond"Automating Inequality is a riveting, emotionally compelling story of vulnerable lives turned upside down by bad data, shoddy software, and bureaucrats too inept or corrupt to make things right. Systems billed as a way to protect the vulnerable in fact, all too often, do just the opposite, trapping them in a modern-day star chamber. Eubanks both gives voice to the marginalized, and offers a bold vision for dismantling the "digital poorhouse." We could all fall victim to the systems Eubanks condemns--and everyone should read this book to learn how modern governance, all too often shrouded behind impenetrable legal and computer code, actually works." ―Frank Pasquale, author of The Black Box Society: The Secret Algorithms that Control Money and Information"Virginia Eubanks' new book shocks us with her gripping stories of the emerging surveillance state for managing poverty in the U.S. today. From single mothers on welfare, to homeless individuals on the streets, to parents suspected of child neglect, the 'digital poorhouse,' as Eubanks calls it, increasingly extends its web of surveillance from classifying to predicting the poor and their behavior, not so much to aid as to manage, discipline and punish them for the poverty society imposes on them. We learn once again that technology might be neutral but not the choices the powerful make to use it. Read this book and join with Eubanks in pushing back against the surveillance state and the injustice it sustains." ―Sanford Schram, Professor of Political Science, Hunter College, CUNY; Professor of Sociology, CUNY Graduate Center

“Automating Inequality” is the rare book that manages to offer extensively researched and tremendously insightful information in a page-turner. Drawing on the voices of those who work in social services - and those who leverage those services - this book details how algorithmic technologies are upending basic government programs supporting the unhoused in accessing shelter, providing access to welfare, and managing child services programs. Eubanks offers historical context about the role of the poorhouse in earlier American societies to explain how, through technology, we’ve built a digital poorhouse that is just as abusive and stigmatizing. This is a critical read for anyone who is trying to understand poverty in America and why well-intended technology is only going to be used to exacerbate existing social inequities. “Automating Inequality” is ethnography at its best, on par with Barbara Ehrenreich’s “Nickel and Dimed” or Matt Desmond’s “Evicted.” I cannot rave loudly enough about the awesomeness of this book.

My reaction to this book is the same as that of another 3 star reviewer (James) in that, while this is an interesting read, it is not primarily about automating equality., it is first and foremost about poverty and cultural attitudes to poverty and inequality. The book opens promisingly with a story about her and her partner's personal nightmare when their health insurance company's computer decided that a perfectly legitimate claim that they made was might be fraudulent. I expected this theme to continue, but instead the technology is subsequently shunted into a supporting role in a much wider tract of advocacy on behalf of the disadvantaged. It is not that I disagree with much of what the author says, but she never demonstrates adequately how technology is central to the problems the poor now face - something one would think would not be that hard to do. Maybe her knowledge of technology is limited, but I was hoping for more about the problems of asking computers to make highly complex social decisions.Instead we get a lot of politics and political history and three complicated, multi-dimensional case studies. The latter are well described, but as I said, whatever the reality, the computer systems come across as only bit players in the accounts the author provides. I guess that I was hoping for a version of Cathy O'Neil's "Weapons of Math Destruction" only applied to inequality, but what I got was something different.

The information is compelling and the storytelling makes this book worthwhile. If you don't about the new poor and new rich, this shifts through some of the haze. Great read!

Technologists worry about Chinese plans for a social scoring system that controls access to education, jobs, housing, and credit. Virginia Eubanks makes clear that we are already building a similar system here in America, and testing it on the poor.

If you're a researcher or practitioner who wants to create new methods for evaluating risks, prioritizing benefits, or similar applications, read this first. It is a great analysis grounded on the study of three key cases in the US, but from which you can draw general conclusions and guidelines.

A great read on the unintended consequences of automation in government programs.

An enraging but utterly necessary account of how technological "progress" may make the most vulnerable people even worse off.

HCI can no longer be endeavored without a human-focused ethical foundation and understanding of history.

A well written and researched work regarding the history and shortcomings of the regulatory process since the radio and television eras. The author demonstrates how the outdated regulatory process threatens the natural growth in todays most important wireless media. The benefits to the public with the limited regulation of the cellular industry (reduced prices, greater access) are a tangible demonstration of the power of market forces instead of regulatory overreach. The author has created a carefully crafted narrative that does not require you to be an economist or tech savant to understand the implications of overregulation by starting with wireless media that we all can relate to, radio and television. The timing of this work is critical as we are continually discussing “net neutrality”. Only market forces can level the monopolistic playing field gained by broadband. The author has done something quite important in this day of complaints. In addition to telling us the problem he has offered carefully considered solutions that can keep the U.S competitive in a rapidly changing world market. When a person of Dr. Hazlett’s experience, knowledge and expertise offers a solution to such an important issue I can only hope that the powers that be (FCC, Congress) will carefully consider these clearly explained remedies that can be implemented in a short time frame. This book bodes well for the resurgence of the non-fiction genre.

As a former engineer, entrepreneur, and venture capital investor who spent 40 years struggling to innovate under the arcane and destructive power of the FCC, Tom Hazlett’s romp through the history of this woebegone regulatory agency brought back many memories while filling in many blanks. This is not your usual boring academic treatise! Peppered with revealing anecdotes and acerbic commentary, reading this book was like sitting in a bar listening to Tom regale you with his stories, something I’ve had the pleasure of doing on many a late night. I highly recommend this to anyone who wants to understand how badly served the public has been by politicized central planners captive to special interests, collectively retarding the march of technology and business progress for far too long. The FCC needs to go the way of the Civil Aeronautics Board and the Interstate Commerce Commission, and Tom explains exactly what to replace it with. Kudos on a great read.

This is two books for the price of one. The first is a readable history of one of America’s most important natural resources - radio spectrum - since its discovery and commercial development for entertainment, mass-marketing, telephony and the Internet. This is a story full of heroic pioneers, and the heroic (often mistaken) assumptions that drove them. The second book, contained within the first, is the meditation of a first-rate scholar on the intractable difficulty of effective government regulations in general, and the hidden social costs that can result from systems of public management that fail to take account of of the inevitable characteristics of political and bureaucratic institutions. Serious learning, lightly worn.

This book tells the story of wireless communications in the United States -- the dynamic interactions and clashes which determined how spectrum has been assigned in the U.S., for what communications systems, starting with the advent of broadcast radio in the 1920s. With rich research, how spectrum was awarded and who won and who lost, how visionaries and mercenaries fought political battles over the awarding, the author brings to life the myriad twists and turns that constructed, sometimes haphazardy, our present day spectrum use. In the award and use of communications spectrum, regulation or lack thereof, has been a major factor in the efficient, best, and highest uses of spectrum. The regulatory philosophies of the Federal Communications Commission were basically of two kinds: heavy government regulation, lengthy award processes, and the inevitable intrusion of special interest lobbying in influencing and determining the regulatory outcome; and the reliance on marketplace forces beginning in 1981 with the Reagan FCC. -- both to allocate spectrum. The two spectrum allocation models are discussed in detail, and how each awarded that spectrum: the central command regulation of politically appointed FCC commissioners, and what the author refers to as the "toaster"model, meaning allocation through marketplace forces,The book is highly educational, but at the same time, entertaining -- even amusing. Marconi tested the first wireless system, using a transmitter on one side of a river, with a receiver on the other. The author amuses by observing that broadcasting at that moment was quite limited, as only Marconi had a receiver. The author had a bird-eye view of spectrum sausage making in the 1990s, as a chief economist at the FCC; As an economist set on seeing marketplace mechanisms to make spectrum awards, the author must have been appalled at the heavily political process that preceeded far more fair and rational ways of awarding spectrum -- namely spectrum actions. The by now validated method awarded the players spectrum who bid highest, because they had in mind the highest and best use of that spectrum.Congress, of course, loved any system that deposited auction proceeds in the Treasury, to be spent.."Political Spectrum" is a wise primer on how to best allocate communications spectrum. It is, based upon the trial and error of the U.S finding the best way to allocate in a manner best serving the public . It should be read globally by communications regulators, professors of communications, and policy makers outside of government, It's a fun read of an up to now hidden part of American regulatory and political communications history.

Review

“Sonia Faruqi had me at the word 'mermaid.' The Oyster Thief creates a lush, imaginary underwater world that somehow manages to reinforce the reality of the need for environmental awareness―it’s unlike anything I’ve ever read.” - Jodi Picoult, New York Times bestselling author of 'A Spark of Light' and 'Small Great Things'“The world’s first ocean conservation novel. Faruqi possesses a unique ability to create a fantastical underwater world while tying in explicit scientific facts that reflect her background in investigative journalism. An entertaining and informative mix of ocean science and literary fiction.” - Forbes“Ecologically informed but whimsically imagined. Adult fans of movies such as The Little Mermaid and Finding Nemo will find Coralline’s adventures delightful, and Faruqi’s caricatured villains are satisfyingly hateful.” - Publishers Weekly“A richly realized underwater tale set in Meristem in the central Atlantic Ocean. I love this book. It offers highly relatable characters and mission, yet beautiful and imaginative fantasy at the same time. The story itself kept me reading and wanting to know more; meanwhile, I loved the process of being guided through an amazingly enchanting ocean underworld. The author’s attention to detail had my own imagination pushing boundaries – previously the flora and fauna of my mind’s ocean were those featured in nature programs – now I saw into the lives, homes, and rich kaleidoscope world of the merpeople. I appreciate very much that the author chose to set the story in the Atlantic Ocean, instead of a fictional ocean. It grounded the story for me, and I think it made her message of responsible ocean stewardship strong by giving it an actual place. As I followed the rich lives and adventures of Coralline and Izar and the fascinatingly named cast of supporting characters, I not only loved the storyline and character development; but, I also was grateful for the depth of real ocean research done by the author. Her writing in this book is captivating, as is the world she creates for her readers.

I found The Oyster Thief to be a spellbinding tale deep under the waves. I’ve never read a book set underwater before (because I’ve never come across one before), but I loved the story and had fun imagining myself there in the Atlantic Ocean. The characters were great–the merpeople, humans, and animal characters–and there were twists that I really enjoyed and did not see coming by a long shot! I will keep my fingers crossed for a sequel.

I couldn't put the Oyster Thief down when I started reading it. The way Sonia Faruqi weaves this world together is so fluid (pardon the pun) that I got lost in the story. Would have loved to hear this as an audiobook! Also, would love to see this as a film, or series....

I really adored this book.It was fun to read.If I had one book to read and only one, this would be it.

The Oyster Thief is a beautifully depicted story of a mermaid's encounter with real life. Right from the first page, I felt that I connected with Coralline and her life, and was intrigued to turn each page to read what would happen next. The story has two protagonists, which keeps the story and perspective constantly shifting and interesting. Loved it!

It took me a long time to read this book. I would pick it up and read a few pages and forget about it. It is essentially a mystery set under the sea. It could have been above water and it would have been the same story. I always finish books I start, but it was a struggle to finish this one.

Enjoyable read , love the mermaid version,

It’s not often that I don’t finish a book. This one was just not my cup of tea, although I enjoy a bit of fantasy now and then.

Smoking Stinks!! (Substance Free Kids Series)

From School Library Journal

Grade 2-4?This pointed lesson is told as the story of a classroom health report. There's a bit of humor at the outset as Maddie, contemplating her grandfather's terrible cough, blurts out, "Smoking stinks!" Readers will empathize with her embarrassment as the teacher confronts her for her outburst and assigns smoking as the topic for her report. At lunch, she and a classmate discover that they both have health problems made worse by a family member's smoking, so they invite Maddie's grandfather to speak to the class about his habit. Buttner's charcoal sketches, suffused with subdued color, are grainy and robust, but somewhat inconsistent in the age and appearance of the two children. However, both classroom and home scenes are unpretentious and lively. The points made by Grandpa Norman are predictable: "There's NOTHING good about smoking." Endorsements from health professionals fill the jacket and endsheets, adding to the didacticism. The story moves along well, though, and offers readers the chance to speak up about the smoking done around them. Readers will join the class in cheering Grandpa Norman as he throws away his cigarettes. The classroom scenario should be a comfortable means of introducing discussion on this pressing topic.?Margaret Bush, Simmons College, BostonCopyright 1998 Reed Business Information, Inc.

From Booklist

Gr. 2^-3, younger for reading aloud. Maddie can't concentrate in school one day because she is so frustrated and worried about her grandfather's smoking. He keeps her up at night coughing, and the smoke aggravates her allergies. Later, while working on her report for health class, she asks her grandfather to tell her about why he smokes. He explains the addictive powers of nicotine and describes the diseases smokers get. Yes, it is didactic, but Maddie's concerns ring true, and the author gives the right amount of information to make her point without overburdening the story. Artist Thom Buttner draws people with highly expressive faces, and the illustrations, on textured paper, are several notches above the norm for a book so clearly intended to present a message. I use this book when I teach my smoking unit. I think the book is very well written. Every year my students reaction to this book says it all. The react and learn about the subject of the book, smoking. We have heartfelt discussions about the book and their own personal stories. My goal is that my students learn never to start smoking and to have some compassion for those who are trying to quit smoking.

Love this book. I use it for classroom guidance and my second graders love it!

Adults who are addicted to tobacco often wonder how they can have the moral authority to tell their children not to smoke. This book will help them keep their children from falling into the tobacco addiction trap. This excellent illustrated book tells about smoking from the points of view of a girl and her grandfather. The information from the grandfather is particularly compelling. He explains to his granddaughter that he still smokes because he is addicted and has tried many times to stop. He expresses anger that he is addicted. The granddaughter observes people smoking and chewing tobacco. Her observations and the illustrations convey the "yuckiness" of tobacco. Some people who are not moved by long-term consequences, can understand the unattractive, unappealing aspects of tobacco. Between the girl's observations and the grandfather's discussion, children are experience both the short and long term effects of smoking. This book should be interesting and accessible to elementary school and middle school-aged children and adolescents. Parents who are recovering from other types of addictions might also make use of this book when they talk to their children.Carol Watkins, M.D.

Fabulous storyline and pictures--the story of a girl doing a research project on smoking for her health class; her grandfather is a smoker.Appropriate for grades 1-6.

Such a great book to teach children to never touch cigarettes! It's very important to teach the future generation and to raise awareness and make them realise how dangerous smoking is.

The real truth of this story is lost in the sensasionalist notion of it's topic, namely smoking. Obviously the authors are no shareholders of RJR or Phillip Morris. But, bury a bad-mannered girl who loses the ability to conduct her in a civil manner, by raising her hand to make her sentiments known for instance, in a topic about smoking, then all is well and good, right? Wrong. If this had been a book about anything else, we'd have been outraged at the manners of this child, yet, because it deals with second hand smoke, we tolerate it. For shame. Put this child in the corner, then let her voice her sentiments. Teach her some manners, then she can talk about others' and their right to smoke freely, particularly adults (whom she feels the need to criticize). A bad-mannered, foul-mouthed little girl, in need of serious civility.

I don't remember where I heard about this book, but I was excited to hear about it. The book is a pretty quick read, I managed to knock it out over the course of a couple of days. I do appreciate this book as it attempts to present an oft-unheard facet of U.S. history. I do not agree that everything in the book was "untold." While some of the information was new, a lot of it was a condensed version of narratives which could be found elsewhere. The book was also lacking in the sort of academic rigor that one may expect from a history book. The bibliography was scant and there were virtually no citations. It's impossible to reference his sources or verify that the information presented is even correct. This was perhaps the most problematic part of the book for me. Sometimes, the author would say where the quotes came from, a newspaper article, or letter, etc. Most commonly though, quotes were inserted into the text with no means of knowing where they were sourced. Similarly, the author would often use phrases such as "it is thought that" or "some researchers say." Who thinks that? What researchers say that? There was little to tie each chapter together. While interesting on their own, the book read more as a series of stories or essays with no relation to one another. It would have been nice to see the author weave a common theme through the chapters so that they were cohesive and complementary to one another. Therein lies a big issue with the book. What was the author's argument? Did he have an argument? I hate to be so constructive in my criticism, but a history book needs some thesis. What is the author's claim? How will he prove the claim? What source material will he draw from?Lastly, I wasn't too impressed with the prose. Many times, it was difficult to know whom or what the author was speaking about. Pronoun references were confusing at times, and I was forced to read sentences or paragraphs a few times before I could figure out what the author was trying to present. It was a little surprising, given the author's background in nonfiction writing. Now, all of that said, this is a great book as it does present information that is often overlooked in the story of the U.S.A. As a student of history, much of the information in the book wasn't new, so much as an amalgam of other histories in one place. For people who aren't history nerds, this book will provide a lot of new information relating to slavery in the United States. The sheer dearth of narratives dedicated to slaves as individuals, as human beings, means that even with its few shortcomings, The Invisibles serves an important purpose in providing context to a complicated time in the nation's history, and the complicated men who led from its founding.

I love stories about unknown people who contributed to projects we know about. What's a bigger project than the White House and early America? Finally putting a name to some of the slaves, some of the people, who lived and helped our first Presidents is incredible. There are concrete stories that may change your mind a little about some of those Presidents. All through the book is woven freedom. The contradictory story of the Founding Fathers and how the early Presidents (except the two Adamses) couldn't reconcile their love of freedom with their financial or racial need to put Africans, and later, African-Americans, in a different category. And how all the slaves, no matter how well treated and comfortable their lives were would have traded everything for freedom. There is also history about the introduction of slavery into America that I didn't know and some history about the early US I didn't know. Really an important read.

I really enjoyed this. It is well researched & well written & I learned a lot. It had never occurred to me that there had been slaves in the White House, I don't know why. It's obvious, when you think about it. There was one story that I was disappointed was missing, tho. I saw it on Finding Your Roots. My memory is no longer good & I can't remember a lot of the details. It was the ancestry of a young fella currently in the music industry. I had heard his name but do not keep w up w/ popular music so I was unfamiliar w/ him. But, his ancestor had been a slave butler in the WH. Someone came & took him away saying he was free but he went back to continue being the butler, much to the disbelief of his descendant. There was even a photo of him. Unfortunately I don't remember his name or who that president was. I believe this is an important book. The author hopes to update it one day as he uncovers more stories & I look forward to that. I've been reading a lot of slave stories lately & think this is something we all need to know more about so I appreciate that this book was written.

This book gives one a glimpse of the role slaves had in respect to the building of the White House and the presidents who owned them. It sheds light on presidents who expounded on personal freedom and liberty for all except Africa Americans whom they held in bondage. The high regard people have for some of these founding fathers is tainted by their disregard for persons of color. This is evidenced by the efforts they took to keep their servants as slaves although it is noted that a few presidents endeared their slaves to them for a lifetime. It is worth reading to gain a more realistic understanding of the times and lives of US presidents.

I felt that the author did a good job of writing on a topic in which there is probably little information. He did some digging to come up with the information he wrote about. I appreciated the fact that the author was simply wrote history without grinding some ax, although he strongly made his point, and one that should be made, that is, unknown, unnamed slaves played a major role in the formation of our country. As I read I wondered about the inner turmoil, and the mental and moral acrobatics some of the early presidents must have used to justify their actions. On the one hand they spoke for, and fought for freedom and the rights of people, but totally disregarded the rights and feelings of the people that served them. For example, the personal slave of James Madison promised to be free at Madison's death, only to be sold by Dolly because she needed money. How could you live with yourself after doing that, unless if you view that person as not a truly a person. Or, another example is John Tyler's bad treatment of his personal slave who actually was the half-brother of Tyler's wife. What a weird household that must have been.Overall it was a very interesting book.

This book is a mixed bag of emotions for me, but I gave it four stars because the music is excellent and I know that I will get use out of the book. Features 11 songs from the movie (listed in other reviews).Pros:-The book itself is beautiful, including several pages of artwork from the movie.-The music is represented fairly well, sounding a lot like it does in the movie and on the soundtrack.-There are some tricky parts, but overall I would say the music is very playable for advanced and intermediate pianists. (I've been playing for 18 years.)-Songs are represented as they are on the soundtrack with full musical interludes.-Most of the vocal harmonies are written out, with the exception of some of the more challenging parts of "Fixer Upper," but those harmonies are most likely what is given in the piano part.Cons:-Melody is doubled in the piano part. This is a BIG negative for me because I do a lot of singing and performing, so I prefer to have the piano accompaniment. This also makes some of the songs harder to play than they should be because you are trying to catch rhythms from the vocal line instead of focusing on (usually) more simplistic/repetitive phrases in the accompaniment.-This is super nit-picky, but there is a "D.S. al Coda" in "Let It Go." I realize that these are used to save ink/pages in printing, but to me this makes the song harder to play because you're dealing with extra page turns back and forth, trying to find where you are in the music, instead of simply being able to move forward. This also uniforms how all of the choruses sound in the song, whereas in the movie the first chorus is more delicate and it becomes more powerful each time you come back to the repeated phrase. I am really picking on this because this was the song I most looked forward to playing, and it wasn't what I was hoping for.All in all, I am VERY happy with my purchase, but there are things I'm left wanting. If you're looking to use this book for piano solos or to accompany younger children it is the perfect product for you. Even if you are a more mature performer that prefers the piano accompaniment (like me), this is a cheaper solution that buying each song individually on a site like MusicNotes, and if you have an experienced pianist, they will be able to fill out the accompaniment by using the chords given for the guitar.

I bought two of Frozen music books what look very much alike: this one and Frozen: Music from the Motion Picture Soundtrack (Piano/Vocal/Guitar) (Piano, Vocal, Guitar Songbook)[ASIN:1480368199]. Big Note book has large staff, easy to read notes and words, they really simplified it that child with 3 years of experience could play it. Why did I give it 3 stars versus 5? In order to make it simple they changed tonality in each and every song that it is two keys higher then original songs (you can find original songs in Frozen: Music from the Motion Picture Soundtrack). For example, the famous original Let It Go is written in F minor and has 4 flats, but in Big Note it is in A minor with no flats and instead of F-G-flat A "Let it Go" goes A-B-C. Why is not it great? My 6 year old immediately said: it does not sound right. I tried for her all the songs in this book and every time she commented: no, it's just not right. Said apart from it, she could play it next year after hard training (so far she has only two full years of experience) and no way she would be able to deal with Frozen: Music from the Motion Picture Soundtrack, the last one is for teachers or older children with higher then medium experience.P.S. According to our music teacher, depending on age group Big Note requires 2.5-4 years of experience and Frozen: Music from the Motion Picture Soundtrack requires 4-5 years.

My son begged me to get the music even though I told him it was too hard. He wanted to play Frozen Heart. He is six and has only been taking for ten months. I bought it and showed his teacher and she said he could do it for a recital if he practiced hard. She said it was way above his level but she knew he could do it because he practices hard. It has been about a month and a half and he just about has it down. It took a lot if practice with either me or my husband sitting by him each time. I wouldn't recommend it with less than a year of piano unless you want to spend a lot of time practicing. It is probably good for three years experience. It doesn't sound exactly like the movie but that is expected for something simplified.

The music is probably a little too "simplified" for an average pianist. The intros are pretty spot on but it seems that as soon as the vocals of a song begin they switch from the actual music score to playing the vocal line with the right hand. This is probably okay if you play by yourself but is annoying if you have a vocalist who wants to "let it go" and sing from her heart. There is no freedom in playing a vocal line. I wish they had simply kept the right/left hand piano lines as the music throughout and just added a third line as a vocal line. Then you would have an option while playing as to which you want to follow.

I really enjoyed the movie Frozen, especially the music, so I was very excited to receive the piano music. The songs are all really diverse and catchy. I am a big fan of Hal Leonard publications, and I've never been disappointed by their music. This music book was very accurate to the soundtrack of the movie and it's great that it includes all the lyrics because my sisters love to sing along as I play. However, as a somewhat advanced pianist, I was slightly disappointed with the level of the music. It is not very challenging and with some of the songs I was able to play right through them after a few tries.I have decided to keep this book, because it was a great price and it is very handy to have all the basic notes and chords so I can adjust the songs to my level. So, beginner and intermediate players, this is a fantastic music book and I would highly recommend it. It is challenging for this level and really fun to play. Advanced players: This book is a little more basic, but is still a fantastic foundation for you to pick up the Frozen songs on your own and adjust them more to your level.

Pharm has written a very useable and most helpful introduction to Echo Dot.This is by far the best I have ever read of these manuals. It will help you through the setup of Echo Dot and beyond.Clearly written and each topic needed easily found from the contents. Just click on it and you are there.Again, this is the most clearly and carefully written help ever. No words are wasted on extraneous things. He stays right on topic - what is needed. I'm still learning what Dot can do and still refer to different sections of this book as needed.I give this the highest and best recommendation I can give.

This was a great introduction to get you started. I have had Amazon Echo for a while. Everything in this book is applicable to it, too!

LOVE, LOVE, LOVE this product!!!! I simply cannot believe that there is this kind of technology available for such a low price! I tell everyone that I have a new roommate named Alexia. I talk to her all of the time. She's so intelligent and informative about almost any subject you want to throw at her. I have a friend who has Sierra on her Ipad. Her son once asked Sierra where was the best place to hide a body and she said "in a cave". I asked my Alexia the same question and she said "call the police". Told my friend that Alexia has better morals than Sierra! LOL

So often books telling you how to do things are written by people that are professionals and have no clue as how to speak to someone that has no clue. I wish they would step back and realize the terminology they are using is not understandable to a person that is not already a professional on how to use the machine. Simplify what you are saying as if you are writing to someone that has never seen much less used the item before. In other words it was over my head and I turned to my sister to help me learn the basics.

I should have just used the online help but with me being so new to something like Echo Dot I thought I would need it. It gives all the facts and is a nice little booklet but my advice is to just use what comes with your Echo Dot and the online user info.

Easy to read and understand, logical. Looking forward to the advanced version. Should have purchased the soft cover version for future reference.

I love the Dot..Each a.m I listen to my briefing before I get out of bed. Every day I use alarm, reminders, listen to music. I have Dot do some math. spell words. My two daughters have Dot, we talk it is clearer than phone, we also send messages and also has Dot add appointments on my phone calendar. I could list more...I love it, plus the sound is o.k. when I play music...Bye

I like the dot 2nd Gen. I like it even more now that I have it portable with A rechargeable base i would now rate it 5 stars with that rechargeable base.

#218,166 Paid in Kindle Store (See Top 100 Paid in Kindle Store)

I love this historical fiction story! The story is about Marianne, a little girl who's mother dropped her off at an orphanage and promised to come back and get her. Marianne and 14 other kids board the train and hope to find their family or someone to adopt them at all the stops. You feel sad for Marianne's situation and also feel as you are reading the story and her mother isn't at each stop, a sense of nervousness, hoping that her mother will show up or that someone will adopt her.True that this is a story with sad elements, but it's a great way to showcase to children that there are many children who are less fortunate than them and that there are children who don't have families like they do. It's a great reality check for kids. Sadly, these orphan trains were reality many years ago and the author does a fantastic job of bringing this concept to the modern age of children and making it understandable. Be prepared for some tough questions from kids as they try to understand how this could happen to other kids. The book is very well written and the illustrations capture that time period so well. The concept is more suited to older children between the ages of 8 and 12.

Beautiful story and decidedly my favorite Childrens book of all time. I stumbled upon this at our local library - admittedly picking it up because I thought it was about trains. Major, wonderful surprise. On first reading, I couldn't make it through page ten without tears - my voice catching in my throat. I quickly bought three copies and will continue to give this precious book as gifts. The author brings you directly onto the train seat with the characters - feeling the dashed hope of the main character as she seeks her mother at each station. I am so glad this book found me and have read it to my boys many times.

Charmingly illustrated book based on true stories of the Orphan Trains. Great book for children today to learn tounderstand something of our history without "preachiness," and with a positive ending. Good book to use to discusswhat is an orphan and why the Trains were needed, as well as the fact that not all of the orphan stories had a goodending. Some were mistreated. Some orphans had to be relocated, and some returned to the orphanages. Age seemedto be a factor, too. So glad to have this book!

Beautiful story about 14 children that rode the orphan train. (fiction). My students really enjoyed this story and had lots of questions following.

beautiful format and colors for such a good story, great gift and a keeper!

A haunting children's story, with incredible pathos and sentiment. The illustrations are excellent and portray the longing of the central character with great dignity.

Very informative book

Wonderful theme and moral message. This book is extremely well written. It is about appropriate, difficulty wise, for third or fourth graders. I would highly recommend it.
