From School Library Journal

Grade 2-4?This pointed lesson is told as the story of a classroom health report. There's a bit of humor at the outset as Maddie, contemplating her grandfather's terrible cough, blurts out, "Smoking stinks!" Readers will empathize with her embarrassment as the teacher confronts her for her outburst and assigns smoking as the topic for her report. At lunch, she and a classmate discover that they both have health problems made worse by a family member's smoking, so they invite Maddie's grandfather to speak to the class about his habit. Buttner's charcoal sketches, suffused with subdued color, are grainy and robust, but somewhat inconsistent in the age and appearance of the two children. However, both classroom and home scenes are unpretentious and lively. The points made by Grandpa Norman are predictable: "There's NOTHING good about smoking." Endorsements from health professionals fill the jacket and endsheets, adding to the didacticism. The story moves along well, though, and offers readers the chance to speak up about the smoking done around them. Readers will join the class in cheering Grandpa Norman as he throws away his cigarettes. The classroom scenario should be a comfortable means of introducing discussion on this pressing topic.?Margaret Bush, Simmons College, BostonCopyright 1998 Reed Business Information, Inc.

From Booklist

Gr. 2^-3, younger for reading aloud. Maddie can't concentrate in school one day because she is so frustrated and worried about her grandfather's smoking. He keeps her up at night coughing, and the smoke aggravates her allergies. Later, while working on her report for health class, she asks her grandfather to tell her about why he smokes. He explains the addictive powers of nicotine and describes the diseases smokers get. Yes, it is didactic, but Maddie's concerns ring true, and the author gives the right amount of information to make her point without overburdening the story. Artist Thom Buttner draws people with highly expressive faces, and the illustrations, on textured paper, are several notches above the norm for a book so clearly intended to present a message. I use this book when I teach my smoking unit. I think the book is very well written. Every year my students reaction to this book says it all. The react and learn about the subject of the book, smoking. We have heartfelt discussions about the book and their own personal stories. My goal is that my students learn never to start smoking and to have some compassion for those who are trying to quit smoking.

Love this book. I use it for classroom guidance and my second graders love it!

Adults who are addicted to tobacco often wonder how they can have the moral authority to tell their children not to smoke. This book will help them keep their children from falling into the tobacco addiction trap. This excellent illustrated book tells about smoking from the points of view of a girl and her grandfather. The information from the grandfather is particularly compelling. He explains to his granddaughter that he still smokes because he is addicted and has tried many times to stop. He expresses anger that he is addicted. The granddaughter observes people smoking and chewing tobacco. Her observations and the illustrations convey the "yuckiness" of tobacco. Some people who are not moved by long-term consequences, can understand the unattractive, unappealing aspects of tobacco. Between the girl's observations and the grandfather's discussion, children are experience both the short and long term effects of smoking. This book should be interesting and accessible to elementary school and middle school-aged children and adolescents. Parents who are recovering from other types of addictions might also make use of this book when they talk to their children.Carol Watkins, M.D.

Fabulous storyline and pictures--the story of a girl doing a research project on smoking for her health class; her grandfather is a smoker.Appropriate for grades 1-6.

Such a great book to teach children to never touch cigarettes! It's very important to teach the future generation and to raise awareness and make them realise how dangerous smoking is.

The real truth of this story is lost in the sensasionalist notion of it's topic, namely smoking. Obviously the authors are no shareholders of RJR or Phillip Morris. But, bury a bad-mannered girl who loses the ability to conduct her in a civil manner, by raising her hand to make her sentiments known for instance, in a topic about smoking, then all is well and good, right? Wrong. If this had been a book about anything else, we'd have been outraged at the manners of this child, yet, because it deals with second hand smoke, we tolerate it. For shame. Put this child in the corner, then let her voice her sentiments. Teach her some manners, then she can talk about others' and their right to smoke freely, particularly adults (whom she feels the need to criticize). A bad-mannered, foul-mouthed little girl, in need of serious civility.

I don't remember where I heard about this book, but I was excited to hear about it. The book is a pretty quick read, I managed to knock it out over the course of a couple of days. I do appreciate this book as it attempts to present an oft-unheard facet of U.S. history. I do not agree that everything in the book was "untold." While some of the information was new, a lot of it was a condensed version of narratives which could be found elsewhere. The book was also lacking in the sort of academic rigor that one may expect from a history book. The bibliography was scant and there were virtually no citations. It's impossible to reference his sources or verify that the information presented is even correct. This was perhaps the most problematic part of the book for me. Sometimes, the author would say where the quotes came from, a newspaper article, or letter, etc. Most commonly though, quotes were inserted into the text with no means of knowing where they were sourced. Similarly, the author would often use phrases such as "it is thought that" or "some researchers say." Who thinks that? What researchers say that? There was little to tie each chapter together. While interesting on their own, the book read more as a series of stories or essays with no relation to one another. It would have been nice to see the author weave a common theme through the chapters so that they were cohesive and complementary to one another. Therein lies a big issue with the book. What was the author's argument? Did he have an argument? I hate to be so constructive in my criticism, but a history book needs some thesis. What is the author's claim? How will he prove the claim? What source material will he draw from?Lastly, I wasn't too impressed with the prose. Many times, it was difficult to know whom or what the author was speaking about. Pronoun references were confusing at times, and I was forced to read sentences or paragraphs a few times before I could figure out what the author was trying to present. It was a little surprising, given the author's background in nonfiction writing. Now, all of that said, this is a great book as it does present information that is often overlooked in the story of the U.S.A. As a student of history, much of the information in the book wasn't new, so much as an amalgam of other histories in one place. For people who aren't history nerds, this book will provide a lot of new information relating to slavery in the United States. The sheer dearth of narratives dedicated to slaves as individuals, as human beings, means that even with its few shortcomings, The Invisibles serves an important purpose in providing context to a complicated time in the nation's history, and the complicated men who led from its founding.

I love stories about unknown people who contributed to projects we know about. What's a bigger project than the White House and early America? Finally putting a name to some of the slaves, some of the people, who lived and helped our first Presidents is incredible. There are concrete stories that may change your mind a little about some of those Presidents. All through the book is woven freedom. The contradictory story of the Founding Fathers and how the early Presidents (except the two Adamses) couldn't reconcile their love of freedom with their financial or racial need to put Africans, and later, African-Americans, in a different category. And how all the slaves, no matter how well treated and comfortable their lives were would have traded everything for freedom. There is also history about the introduction of slavery into America that I didn't know and some history about the early US I didn't know. Really an important read.

I really enjoyed this. It is well researched & well written & I learned a lot. It had never occurred to me that there had been slaves in the White House, I don't know why. It's obvious, when you think about it. There was one story that I was disappointed was missing, tho. I saw it on Finding Your Roots. My memory is no longer good & I can't remember a lot of the details. It was the ancestry of a young fella currently in the music industry. I had heard his name but do not keep w up w/ popular music so I was unfamiliar w/ him. But, his ancestor had been a slave butler in the WH. Someone came & took him away saying he was free but he went back to continue being the butler, much to the disbelief of his descendant. There was even a photo of him. Unfortunately I don't remember his name or who that president was. I believe this is an important book. The author hopes to update it one day as he uncovers more stories & I look forward to that. I've been reading a lot of slave stories lately & think this is something we all need to know more about so I appreciate that this book was written.

This book gives one a glimpse of the role slaves had in respect to the building of the White House and the presidents who owned them. It sheds light on presidents who expounded on personal freedom and liberty for all except Africa Americans whom they held in bondage. The high regard people have for some of these founding fathers is tainted by their disregard for persons of color. This is evidenced by the efforts they took to keep their servants as slaves although it is noted that a few presidents endeared their slaves to them for a lifetime. It is worth reading to gain a more realistic understanding of the times and lives of US presidents.

I felt that the author did a good job of writing on a topic in which there is probably little information. He did some digging to come up with the information he wrote about. I appreciated the fact that the author was simply wrote history without grinding some ax, although he strongly made his point, and one that should be made, that is, unknown, unnamed slaves played a major role in the formation of our country. As I read I wondered about the inner turmoil, and the mental and moral acrobatics some of the early presidents must have used to justify their actions. On the one hand they spoke for, and fought for freedom and the rights of people, but totally disregarded the rights and feelings of the people that served them. For example, the personal slave of James Madison promised to be free at Madison's death, only to be sold by Dolly because she needed money. How could you live with yourself after doing that, unless if you view that person as not a truly a person. Or, another example is John Tyler's bad treatment of his personal slave who actually was the half-brother of Tyler's wife. What a weird household that must have been.Overall it was a very interesting book.

This book is a mixed bag of emotions for me, but I gave it four stars because the music is excellent and I know that I will get use out of the book. Features 11 songs from the movie (listed in other reviews).Pros:-The book itself is beautiful, including several pages of artwork from the movie.-The music is represented fairly well, sounding a lot like it does in the movie and on the soundtrack.-There are some tricky parts, but overall I would say the music is very playable for advanced and intermediate pianists. (I've been playing for 18 years.)-Songs are represented as they are on the soundtrack with full musical interludes.-Most of the vocal harmonies are written out, with the exception of some of the more challenging parts of "Fixer Upper," but those harmonies are most likely what is given in the piano part.Cons:-Melody is doubled in the piano part. This is a BIG negative for me because I do a lot of singing and performing, so I prefer to have the piano accompaniment. This also makes some of the songs harder to play than they should be because you are trying to catch rhythms from the vocal line instead of focusing on (usually) more simplistic/repetitive phrases in the accompaniment.-This is super nit-picky, but there is a "D.S. al Coda" in "Let It Go." I realize that these are used to save ink/pages in printing, but to me this makes the song harder to play because you're dealing with extra page turns back and forth, trying to find where you are in the music, instead of simply being able to move forward. This also uniforms how all of the choruses sound in the song, whereas in the movie the first chorus is more delicate and it becomes more powerful each time you come back to the repeated phrase. I am really picking on this because this was the song I most looked forward to playing, and it wasn't what I was hoping for.All in all, I am VERY happy with my purchase, but there are things I'm left wanting. If you're looking to use this book for piano solos or to accompany younger children it is the perfect product for you. Even if you are a more mature performer that prefers the piano accompaniment (like me), this is a cheaper solution that buying each song individually on a site like MusicNotes, and if you have an experienced pianist, they will be able to fill out the accompaniment by using the chords given for the guitar.

I bought two of Frozen music books what look very much alike: this one and Frozen: Music from the Motion Picture Soundtrack (Piano/Vocal/Guitar) (Piano, Vocal, Guitar Songbook)[ASIN:1480368199]. Big Note book has large staff, easy to read notes and words, they really simplified it that child with 3 years of experience could play it. Why did I give it 3 stars versus 5? In order to make it simple they changed tonality in each and every song that it is two keys higher then original songs (you can find original songs in Frozen: Music from the Motion Picture Soundtrack). For example, the famous original Let It Go is written in F minor and has 4 flats, but in Big Note it is in A minor with no flats and instead of F-G-flat A "Let it Go" goes A-B-C. Why is not it great? My 6 year old immediately said: it does not sound right. I tried for her all the songs in this book and every time she commented: no, it's just not right. Said apart from it, she could play it next year after hard training (so far she has only two full years of experience) and no way she would be able to deal with Frozen: Music from the Motion Picture Soundtrack, the last one is for teachers or older children with higher then medium experience.P.S. According to our music teacher, depending on age group Big Note requires 2.5-4 years of experience and Frozen: Music from the Motion Picture Soundtrack requires 4-5 years.

My son begged me to get the music even though I told him it was too hard. He wanted to play Frozen Heart. He is six and has only been taking for ten months. I bought it and showed his teacher and she said he could do it for a recital if he practiced hard. She said it was way above his level but she knew he could do it because he practices hard. It has been about a month and a half and he just about has it down. It took a lot if practice with either me or my husband sitting by him each time. I wouldn't recommend it with less than a year of piano unless you want to spend a lot of time practicing. It is probably good for three years experience. It doesn't sound exactly like the movie but that is expected for something simplified.

The music is probably a little too "simplified" for an average pianist. The intros are pretty spot on but it seems that as soon as the vocals of a song begin they switch from the actual music score to playing the vocal line with the right hand. This is probably okay if you play by yourself but is annoying if you have a vocalist who wants to "let it go" and sing from her heart. There is no freedom in playing a vocal line. I wish they had simply kept the right/left hand piano lines as the music throughout and just added a third line as a vocal line. Then you would have an option while playing as to which you want to follow.

I really enjoyed the movie Frozen, especially the music, so I was very excited to receive the piano music. The songs are all really diverse and catchy. I am a big fan of Hal Leonard publications, and I've never been disappointed by their music. This music book was very accurate to the soundtrack of the movie and it's great that it includes all the lyrics because my sisters love to sing along as I play. However, as a somewhat advanced pianist, I was slightly disappointed with the level of the music. It is not very challenging and with some of the songs I was able to play right through them after a few tries.I have decided to keep this book, because it was a great price and it is very handy to have all the basic notes and chords so I can adjust the songs to my level. So, beginner and intermediate players, this is a fantastic music book and I would highly recommend it. It is challenging for this level and really fun to play. Advanced players: This book is a little more basic, but is still a fantastic foundation for you to pick up the Frozen songs on your own and adjust them more to your level.
