This review applies specifically to the J. R. Pole edition of The Federalist, published by Hackett. Considering the thorough notes and fine introduction, this should be the preferred edition of The Federalist for the student and general reader. Sadly, I have found, within the first fifteen pages, an unacceptable number of errors in editing or proofreading. Assuming this rate of errors is representative of the text as a whole, it cannot be relied on as the primary edition for studying this important historical work. If you can afford several editions, by all means acquire the Pole edition for its helpful notes, but I would recommend the standard Cooke edition (from Wesleyan U. Press), the Gideon edition (from Liberty Fund), or the inexpensive Signet edition for the text itself.Here are examples of the errors:On p. xlii, the first essay is incorrectly attributed to John Jay, rather than Alexander Hamilton.On pages 4 and 15, footnotes contain inaccurate cross-references to other notes.Most serious is an apparently systematic editing problem with the text itself. The intention of the Pole edition is to present the so-called "McClean" text, which contained revisions (by the authors) to the original newspaper versions of the essays. However, these revisions are inconsistently incorporated in the Pole edition. For example, in the newspaper text of the third essay, a series of sub-arguments is set forth in separate paragraphs that each begin with the word "Because." In the McClean text, a new sentence was added to indicate that a list of reasons follows, and the word "Because" was omitted from the beginning of each paragraph in the list. But in the Pole edition, one of the paragraphs is not revised at all (the word "Because" still appears), and another is incompletely revised, so that it begins incorrectly with the words "If even if the governing party . . ." rather than "If even the governing party . . ." All this may sound arcane, but, besides being technically inaccurate, it makes the argument confusing and ungrammatical where it is not so, in a correct text of either the newspaper or the McClean versions. I should note that the text was apparently provided by the Intelex Corporation, not prepared by Professor Pole himself.

Who couldn't love a little penguin with a big dream? Orville does not disappoint. This is a unique, sweet, and lively story that encourages individuality and at the same time demonstrates the importance of community. The illustrations are so entertaining and support the story well for young readers. All this and a penguin who strives to be an astronaut...what are you waiting for? Congratulations to the author and to Orville on a smash hit!

My 2 yr. old grandson was ALL about penguins this Christmas, so I was intrigued when I found this highly-rated board book title, I "peeked inside" and was delighted by the illustrations, so I took a chance that it would be a sweet book about how little problems can seem big until you're reminded that "things aren't so bad after all..." Well, it started out cute and funny - with the (whiny) penguin going on and on about all the things that were bothering him - and when read with the right intonation, little kids will find it sort of silly and exaggerated - I mean toddlers are well known for waffling minute-by-minute between giddy bliss and dramatic despair. But the entire storyline comes to a record-scratch halt when this wise walrus just appears out of nowhere and gives this giant soliloquy (for an ENTIRE page, which for a 2 yr. old is a REALLY long paragraph -he loses interest if I don't read it fast with edits), essentially reminding penguin "how things aren't really that bad, and he should appreciate the beauty of the world, and that he really DOES like all the things he's complaining about, etc." And that's that. That's literally the end of the whining - or is it?? Somehow, penguin can only muster a couple of now-positive observations before he reverts to complaining about how cold his beak is again on the last page! I think the story had a lot of potential, but there's a missed opportunity here... the author could've taken a little more gradual path back to penguin's mood equilibrium (instead of just summarily dismissing penguin's complaints with one fell swoop of walrus wisdom). Maybe penguin could've been reminded of how lovely the mountain air feels when he breathes it in, or how the moonlight shines off those frigid icebergs, etc. a little bit at a time from different characters he encounters (like make him ponder a different perspective?) -- and help him find his OWN way back to happiness/satisfaction with his world. But this is a long way to say, I found the book entertaining up until a point - then I kinda wanted to rewrite the ending. Maybe older kids will find it snarky, but for the 2-3 yr. old - it's just OK.

I love the premise of this story. Orville wants to be able to do big things just like the other animals in the zoo. But no one believes he can reach his dream because he's so small. With determination and a great plan, he'll show them he can do it and in the process make closer friendships. I love the puns and word play in this story also. My kids find it so endearing and funny - a great combination!

My 5 yo will never look at 2 liter cokes the same way again thanks to Orvilleâ€™s ingenuity! Excited to have this in our picture book library as itâ€™s one weâ€™ll read again and again.

But when he discovers that his friends believed in him the whole time, Orville realizes that the best thing about adventures is sharing them with others. I bought this book to use with my square food gardening book. It is filled with great tips, and ideas for how to raise garden crops using the vertical method. It is a different way to garden if you have never done this before, but it really works. If you don't have much room and you want to get the best bang for your buck, this book is one you should have. I highly recommend it.

I've bought a few books lately, all in the gardening section. I looked for the highest ratings, but verified the ratings by reading the reviews, both good & bad. Well, I was looking for a book to give more ideas for Vertical Gardening. I already garden, have many different plants.. vegetables, fruits, flowers and fruit trees. I'm looking to utilize more vertical space, so I have more room to grow more.I have only a few sections in my yard where I have a good amount of unobstructed sun, perfect for food growing. My trees are all in containers for now, so that I can continue to shuffle things around, trying to have everyone happy. I'm getting rid of many of the decorative plants that hardly contribute to the pollinators as well.This book goes into Vertical Gardening but I found a good part of it for decorative purposes... covering cabins, trees (which I don't agree with, I think the Ivy chokes them), gazebos or walls. This type of gardening is not very appealing to me. For one, I don't have the land for it. Secondly, I prefer gardening for food and planting for the beneficial insects as well. I get pleasure from the great scents and the beauty of butterflies or bees buzzing all around.The other thing I didn't like about the book, most of the pages have no color. There is a small section with glossy, colorful photos, but they were more for the decorative vines, walls, & fountain views. Maybe about 20 pages worthof colorful photos... out of the 300+ pages. The rest of the pages are Black, White, & Green, however, there were tons of black & white photos throughout... I just wish they were in color to be able to see the detail better, or the colors of the foliage & flowers, there would be a more visible contrast with the trellis or whatever structure they were making an example of. I just think it would make the book a tad more helpful in color. The author does touch on the food that is "growable" vertically, such as mini melons, pumpkins, squash... he lists some growing facts like planting season, typical days to maturity, zones best grown in and the general length or height to expect. That's helpful, so you can plan for specific spacing and avoid over crowding. The book also goes into espalier growing, which is also vertical, but they're trees, again, that's not the area I was looking for ideas on.I don't know. I can't say the book wasn't helpful at all, but it wasn't as helpful as I expected either. I'm keeping it and utilize what I can out of it.

I recommend this book for everyone! Whether you only have space for containers on a patio, a 12 inch space against a south, east, or west wall, or a garden plot with rows and rows, you can benefit from the information in this book. Did you know that you can grow 10 times more green beans when growing a pole snap bean than when growing a bush bean?I grew my first garden this past summer at my new residence, but the garden space wasn't enough for what I have plans to grow. My hubby said we can't make a bigger plot, so I am thrilled while reading this book, realizing that many of my space problems can be easily solved with a little effort and cost. Cost depends on our choices of the materials that we use and I intend to grow bamboo for many of my structures. The author explains various types of bamboo that he likes for best appearance.Other added benefits are the saving of water while growing a lot more of whatever you want to grow, less work of weeding, no more back breaking work picking green beans and such low to the ground, easier pest control, better flavor of produce...and so much more.You can grow in an 8 square foot vertical space what you would normally grow in a 24 square foot horizontal space. My husband says that food taste better when vertical growing and Derek Fell explains that the plants contain more Chlorophyll, which improves the taste of the plants. He also shares how to grow tomatoes on top of the ground and potatoes directly underneath in the tomato root system.This book contains information of how to use various items to build your structures to grow up and not out, which plants produce an abundance supply, and tidbits of wisdom from years of experience and experimentation are sprinkled throughout.My mother gave me an advertisment that she received concerning this book and I am so glad that she did! It's going to prove invaluable to me!

There are helpful suggestions for dealing with problems such as diseases and insect, controlling weeds and otherwise keeping plants healthy. Different sections deal with food producing plants, flowering vines and others best known for their foliage. Color photos in the book were high quality and attractive. While the book is inexpensive, I feel it is well worthy owning.

I sometimes am limited to space when gardening. I was amazed at how many things can grow vertically. This book is very educational and I am glad that I purchased it to add to my collection.

LOVE THIS!!!!! I am combining several ideas in gardening since I have very limited sunlight due to trees. I am even growing a vertical garden in an old cooler on my patio. I can pull it up close to the house if bad weather is coming or out of the way if bbq-ing. It seems easier to keep the animals off, is a little better to see what is growing, can watch for bugs better, seems like it will be easier to harvest and save my back from bending over so far. I have even incorporated an old metal box springs off my grandmothers bed. I place next to the fence and used t-post and straps to hold upright. On the top I planted flowers in pots. I have tied my beans and squash with different colored yarn to keep them growing in there own spot and have stick pinwheels in the sides and shny things in the trees close by. This does seem to be helping with the birds. I didn't mind at first but then the birds started pecking at the produce. Lots of great Ideas!!!!!

Nice book.

Love this book! I currently have over a dozen zentangle books and this book has quickly become my 'go-to' book when tangeling. Instructions are quite clear and I also like the detail that is shared about the history behind The Tangles and what they mean to the author. Beate has a very active website as well and is very active in the zentangle community which is always good to see from an author of A Zentangle book. Highly recommended!

I own a lot of Zentangle Books. This book by Beate Winkler is, by far, one of the best. Easy to use with a lot of patterns I've not seen before. There is also wit, wisdom and humor collected in these pages. I guarantee you will enjoy it and learn from it.

I think this is a great book if you are not just starting out. It gets complex too soon and I found myself unable to follow the patterns. I had to turn to the internet to find better breakdowns. Then the author immediately throws at you alternative ways to do the pattern and how to combine them with others you have yet to learn. Having take one 2 hour class I find it a bit too much all at once. Patterns I could not follow in the book I am finding on the internet and having luck in finishing them. As is the problem with many teachers, because they are so experienced or have perhaps an art background they forget others may not. It is too much too soon.

If I was heading to a deserted island that UPS couldn't reach and I could only take ONE Zentangle book along, this without doubt would be the one!!

This is a great book. Has beautiful, simple steps drawn clearly to make each of over 100 Zentangles, with an index in the back. This is the first book I bought, and is still the best one. Don't hesitate. But it. You won't be disappointed.

I am a Certified Zentangle Teacher and have been tangling for several years. I purchased "The Great Zentangle Book" and found it a wonderful comprehensive book offering instruction, inspiration and fun for everyone- beginners to the experienced. I highly recommend it!

This is my favorite ZentangleÂ® book right now. Subtitled Learn to Tangle with 101 Engaging Patterns, the book breaks down each pattern into clear steps. This step by step design is key, because many of the completed patterns look way more complicated than they actually are.Also, each pattern has several examples of the design being combined with other patterns, and showing possible ways to shade for depth and dimension.The book also explains the history, benefits, and philosophy behind Zentangle, besides listing recommended materials.What makes this book different from other Zentangle books Iâ€™ve reviewed is the way each pattern gets its own page. Thereâ€™s plenty of room for as many as nine step-outs and for Beateâ€™s (and other Certified Zentangle Teachersâ€™) comments about each pattern. Thereâ€™s even a glossary of terms in the back.I know that step-by-step directions are available on the web (I have a whole board of Zentangle designs on Pinterest), but looking them up can be tedious. Itâ€™s nice to have a good book of patterns that you can just flip through.

I echo many of the comments already made. I don't think I could grasp many of the patterns without already having learned from some step-by-step manuals. I do think the pattern instructions are clear and I find the variations intriguing. I would have liked to have given this book a 4.5 review because it would be more useful to be wire-bound so you could leave it flat on the space where you are doing your Zentangle. Perhaps a minor consideration, but still useful. I also wish it came with an index (with thumbnails). Professional Zentanglers (what a concept, eh?) may remember the name of the various patterns, not so for us amateurs. So, a nice index with pics would be ideal. Even better, online-index and examples that I could access from the cell or tablet while doing my drawings. An organizational thing, but a definite improvement. That said, this book is detailed, helpful and illustrative. Combined with the "One Zentangle a day" I am fully "taught" and ready to experiment.
