Really glad Gary Angel wrote this book (been hoping he'd write for a while) as a fan and follower of his writing for some time.Let me say a few words about this wonderful work of his - its more a book for an advanced analytics practitioner than a beginner (though a beginner will benefit from reading at least the first few chapters) the author has been careful to stay away from being vendor specific, a wise decision that will keep the book current for years to come. The first few chapters explain why digital is so hard to measure (because we're really measuring people) and distills much of the content of what he has been writing about at SEMANGEL (his blog) for the last 10 years or so.When I got past Chapter 4, I began to realize the book was really for a data architect/analyst who will combine segmentation, data wrangling and master data management together; the descriptions of fairly intricate processes one goes through while working with digital and omnichannel data were very precise (though it would be difficult to relate to outside that use case and job function) and I was able to relate to most of it but would probably need to be doing those tasks on a regular basis as my primary job function to fully grasp everything the author is talking about in the later chapters.The other thing that I found interesting and different about this book is that it was written entirely in the first person voice, as a practitioner sharing what he has found to be true based on the all the analytics implementations done over close to 20 years - all which is very valuable. Its also validating that its possible to write a technical book without citations. I will try to integrate much of the analytics advice in this book with my Web Analytics classes in the future.I highly recommend this book to all analytics readers because it provides a viable framework from which to understand both the digital and omnichannel world.

There are many books about web analytics, but this is unique: it explains a unique way of reasoning to find the best analytics by using a framework that helps you understand better how to track the customers and their actions.

Truely amazing read. Gary raised the bar with this one and set the standard for what a book about digital analytics should be.

This is a masterpiece that uses very simple words and stories to convey a much more accurate and useful approach to measuring and optimizing the digital world than has previously been available. Reminds me of how the greatest scientists can make sophisticated concepts accessible to everyone by putting them into plain language. That's exactly what Gary Angel is doing with this work.The book effortlessly takes the bottom out of questionable blanket statements that have been a common refrain among analysts and pundits for years such as: "Just identify your key performance indicators (KPIs) and measure against them and you'll be fine". Not so, as the author reveals with effective examples..Drawing on the author's decade + of consulting work with enterprises across many verticals, the book includes practical samples of tried and proven segmentation approaches. It also builds on and updates the author's earlier methods such as functionalism. So even for readers who may be familiar with bits and pieces of the author's methods, this book puts them into a greater whole and improves upon them.It's not every day that you get to learn the details of how a successful consultancy helps its customers get value from analytics. This book should be much higher priced given how much practical value it provides. A must have for every digital analyst and those who are responsible for driving outcomes through digital channels.

Measuring the Digital World nails it -- It provides an easy to grasp framework for jump-starting or building our your team's analytics capabilities. It is a playbook and a bible at the same time. I especially like his concept of the Two - Tier Segmentation approach (focusing on the Who and What they are trying to achieve first) and then laying on his Functionalism approach which basically turns analytics on its head and asks the simple question "What is that page trying to achieve?" Is it a router page with the goal of taking the user to a specific page or just an information page? This is a must read -- and should be kept near your desk so if you need to look smart to your boss, your teacher, your co-worker, you can just pick it up and read a chapter or two. A Kids' Guide to America's Bill of Rights begins with an overview of the Bill of Rights, the first 10 Amendments to the U.S. Constitution. The overview is followed by three chapters about the First Amendment and then includes one chapter about each subsequent Amendment. Each chapter contains the wording of the Amendment, examples to clarify the Amendment, an idea of which rights the authors of the Bill of Rights intended to protect, and a discussion of Supreme Court cases involving the Amendment. Where it is appropriate, Krull compares rights in other countries to the rights guaranteed by the particular Amendment she is discussing. Also where appropriate, Krull discusses the impact of the particular Amendment on kids.Some of the Amendments, for instance the Eighth Amendment which protects against cruel and unusual punishment, bring up difficult subjects such as capital punishment. Krull deals with these subjects in a very straightforward way, neither shirking from them nor overdramatizing them.Krull's political leanings are clear. When discussing the Second Amendment, which guarantees the right to bear arms, Krull lists multiple organizations that support gun control. She also lists the National Rifle Association, which opposes gun control, but she does not list any other organizations that oppose gun control. Some bias is also clear in her text. I did not feel her bias compromised her clarity in discussing each Amendment. However, kids from liberal families might be more comfortable with this book than kids from conservative families.The illustrations add humor and echo points raised by the text.The book was published in 1999. I'd love to see a post 9/11 version of the book.This book is written with a great deal of reverence for the Bill of Rights. With all the craziness that is the U.S. political system these days, I decided I needed to know more about our foundational documents. I started with this book, because I wanted an easy intro before I started delving into the hard stuff. (I am an adult with a college degree.)Even though the book is written for kids -- maybe BECAUSE it's written for kids -- it's an enjoyable read for adults. The explanations and examples made it easy for me to memorize those first 10 amendments, in addition to understanding what they're all about.I think the only criticism I have is that SOMETIMES opinions are presented as facts . . . mostly in the case of whether the Constitution and Bill of Rights are living documents or not. The author presents them as such, and the only reason I knew about dissenting views in the matter is that I have a good friend who will argue until she's blue in the face that they are NOT living documents. For this reason only, I gave the book 4 stars rather than 5.

I think this is a very well written book that should be in all middle schools and high schools.

This book really helped my 13year old son. He loved reading it and the Teacher was very pleased with reviewing the book. An excellent choice and easy reading.

As a teacher and a textbook author, I have often found that books intended for children often are useful to older students as well as to adults, and this book is an excellent example of that! The book is interesting, easy to read, and contains much information that was new to the adults who read it as well as the kids. I would highly recommend this book for its readability, organization, and intriguing content.

I ordered this book as a resource for my middle school student's report on the First Amendment. It was so informative and interesting that I sat down and read the entire book just for fun! The author has a wonderfully readable writing style and makes Constitutional history entertaining. Fabulous!

Brief summary and review, no spoilers.This novel takes place in England and the time period is right after the reign of the legendary King Arthur - which is all somewhat deliberately vague. The storyline centers around the travels of 5 main characters.The first two characters we meet - and indeed in many ways the central two characters - are an elderly couple who leave their village in search of their son. Their memories are fading and they are not sure where their son is or even what he looks like anymore. Their reason for leaving their village are hazy as well; ostensibly something to do with their being denied a candle by other villagers.The other characters are a young boy, a brave warrior and a valiant old knight.So much of the storyline is dreamlike and vague and I believe your ultimate enjoyment and satisfaction of this novel is based on the premise that the less you know the better, so I will only say a bit more without causing any spoilers.We know that the characters all unite at some point. We know that they are all on different missions. Their goals are seemingly unclear but will become clear at the end.I loved this book. At the same time I have to say that it was not a quick read for me and there were points up until midway when I thought about giving up on it. Part of this was that I am not usually a fan of books that are somewhat "dreamlike" or surreal and I usually like my stories more straight-forward and grounded. There are lots of points in this book where you feel your own memory is fading; indeed what it might be like to have dementia. That Ishiguro pulls this off so effectively is impressive but daunting for the reader.So for me, this book took a bit of work, but I was so glad by the time I finished that I had read it. The prose, as with any of the other book by this author, is just gorgeous. You really don't want to skip one word and you really shouldn't.I do promise you that it all comes together beautifully by the end, and it was quite an emotional read for me. The storyline is so heartfelt and very mythic in feel and Ishiguro has some poignant and powerful things to say about love and vengeance, morals and ethics and about memory and reflection. Just amazing.Highly recommended.

I have never read anything quite like this ever before..The Buried Giant is part fable, part road-story, part exploration of character: when the point of the journey and the backstory becomes clear, it was as if a light came on. I can think of some people who'd find this writing infuriating: the whole way in which it's handled makes it hard to work out whether what's being described is the world as it is or the world as it's being seen by the characters. Once I'd decided simply to allow the author's approach to work itself out, I loved it: but, as I say, it's a really strange book, a really strange way of writing. And: please note my star rating: once I'd finished it, I thought it brilliant!( I went on to read some of the author's other works: they're quite different, both from this and really, from each other: but just as skilfully written! I now have a new author to follow)

Is it better to remember—or to forget? Is memory a treasure that gives our lives meaning and shapes our identities--or a curse that keeps us from feeling love and acceptance in the present?The Buried Giant is an ideal example of what rich, meaningful, challenging literary fantasy can do.It's reminiscent of Ishiguro's own work (Never Let Me Go similarly exemplifies the potential of literary science fiction) but also of the philosophical, allegorical, character-driven fantasy of Mervyn Peake, Gene Wolfe, Ursula Le Guin, and Margo Lanagan (whose amazing Tender Morsels is also a must-read), among others. Imagine Wolfe's Wizard Knight series with its Arthurian setting and unpredictability but with elderly protagonists, a smaller cast, and a focus on memory (and how it can provide meaning and also create pain--for individuals and nations) and you'll have a good picture of what to expect from The Buried Giant.Literal events are comprehensible with some effort (despite shifting points of view and breaks in chronology as characters start stories and only later explain the events leading up to them), but the novel leaves open profound questions about love, war, violence, and memory. It's also consistently beautiful and engaging at the sentence level--unlike in much generic fantasy (which sometimes presents elaborate worlds and plots but falls flat in emotion, dialogue, and characterization), characters each speak and act in completely distinct ways, and there is wit and meaningful, often moving emotions in the smallest incidents. The novel is more about its characters and themes than its plot, and it isn't dependent on lots of things happening, but by the end, the lives of the characters, and the shape of their world, are indeed fundamentally changed.Unfortunately, books like this often disappoint the two groups of readers who give them a chance: readers of realistic literary fiction, who are turned off that it's fantasy, which they foolishly see as subliterary (even though most of the history of literature before the development of realism actually consists of what we'd now consider fantasy, and the kind of primarily commercial fantasy thought to define the genre is merely an invention of the last few decades), and readers of generic/commercial fantasy, whose conventional expectations (a standard quest, action, completely clear storytelling, an enormous amount of world-building, etc.) will be frustrated by the novel's literary style and focus on character and theme.But for those who can appreciate literary fantasy (my own favorite form of literature), it will be magical--the kind of book to read and reread and give to others in the hopes they will feel the same.

Floyd J. Fowler, Jr. is a graduate of Wesleyan University and received a PhD from the University of Michigan in 1966. I love Ellen Hopkins, she should consider writing adult as much as she does young adult. The book was clever, with some mystery and like any other Ellen Hopkins book I just couldn't put it down. The description of the book is little misleading, I thought it would be about an abusive and controlling relationship, it's not. Tara is very much the equal to Cavin. Just sit back and enjoy. PS: this book as the traditional novel format with some poems in between chapters unlike all her other books.

This book was lacking. It wasn't super interesting and I just kept waiting for some sort of crazy twist to liven it up. It never came.

This woman is poetic no matter what style she writes in. Amazing character development, and enough mystery and intrigue to keep you up at night rethinking what you just read. Love. This. Book.

Definitely not my favorite... I'm a huge Ellen Hopkins fan! However, this book ended very abruptly, like she ran out of things to write about... It's got some very sexy scenes, but I don't honk erotica is for her.

I could not put this book down. So much so, when I finished, I had to download the second book in this series so that I could see how it all ends. Highly recommend.

Although it took me longer to become involved with this one of Ellen Hopkins' books, I definitely found myself there. I'm a much bigger fan of her fast-paced YA novels, but this book got me my fix and I'm happy to say that I enjoyed it, even with the loose ends. I'll be hoping to read those ends tied up in a future book, for sure.

This book blew me away, the author is new to me and I am hooked, can't wait to binge read. Psychological drama at it's best!

I've read my fair share of 'how to write about art' books and this ranks as one of my favorites. I used it as a PhD student and now I recommend it to my juniors and seniors. It's clear, concise, well sectioned and you can dip in and out of it.

I found " A short guide to Writing about Art" by Sylvan Barnet to be very informative and the subject matter well organized.The book is easy to read and I really enjoyed reading it. It is well written and useful for anyone writing about art- It may be writing an essay about art or writing a review of an exhibition. It also has useful information on how to look at art.

This was a good source during my time studying art history in college. I referred to it often but find I have no use for it now that I'm done with school. If this book is required for a class at your school, I would try renting it rather than purchasing it. It may come in handy for the short term but probably not for the long term.

This book really helped me write art analysis papers. There are example papers, questions to ask yourself when looking at art, etc. I'm glad I chose to pick up this suggested title--it wasn't mandatory for the class, but maybe it should've been.

So honest! By whose standard do we deem the value of a piece of art work? Makes great analytical observations that I had not realized before. Gives exact details on how to write a thesis statement. How to write an abstract and bibliography. Gives excellent examples and demonstrates differences between Turabian, Chicago and MLA formatting styles of writing. Well defined. Witty. Easy to understand. Think I'll keep this in my personal library, for future reference. Thought-provoking.

A very helpful book for the art history student who has been told they must produce a final paper for the term. Barnet points out what to pay attention to, not to leave out, and advice on how to put it all together so that you will impress your professor with your scholarship and sincerity. He presents different subjects and types of papers and shows actual examples students have done when writing their papers.

Bought this book for my art history class and it is VERY informative. There are sample essays in the book and it tells you what you should and shouldn't write which was very helpful when I was writing my essays. Overall, definitely recommend if you want to write about art or are taking an art class that requires writing an essay.

I am generally a huge fan of the Eyewitness guides -- they are always my first pick when I am going somewhere new. I love the "Top 10" guides for when my visit to a city is short and I am able to pick just a few places to go and know I will also be provided with a handy pocket transit map. The translation of this one to a Kindle edition, though, was disastrous -- Eyewitness guides are nothing without maps and pictures but, when the Kindle-ized this one, they must have lost the majority of the images and all useful maps. There were some, mostly thumbnail, pictures, but they were in a resolution that did not allow them to enlarge nicely. The map of the top 10 sites, could only be seen without seeing the corresponding list of the 10 sites. Same for the map of the top 10 restaurants, top 10 monuments and memorials, etc. Maps of major sites, such as the features of the Schonbrunn's gardens, can only be seen with no labels or accompanying text at all, translating them from maps into meaningless collections of rectangles of varying colors -- the same was sadly true of all the maps to key features of major sites. Can I get my money back?I would like to blame all of my complaints on the poor translation of the book into a Kindle edition, but I also think it's fair to say there's a shortage of good content. There should have been some more Top 10 lists included. I might have listed them in their entirety in this review. Top 10 Singapore and Top 10 San Diego and all the other Top 10 books all are so much more helpful.

Having only four days in Vienna, we wanted to pack in the most while keeping an eye on expenses. The "Top 10" guide greatly facilitated the efficient organization of our sightseeing, cultural, and dining experiences. Took the guide's advice and saved/saw the most by using the airport train and hop on/off two day tour bus pass. The included easy to read compact city center map complimented the guide. It's not necessary to purchase a separate city map.

We have been using DK Eyewitness Travel books for quite a while now. We use the regular size books and also the portable Top 10 books as well. I love reading the historical backgrounds that give you an idea about the country and people you will be visiting, the colorful pictures, maps, recommendations and practical information sections. I am so used to the practicality of the way the book is set up, I get lost when I look at other travel books. When we plan a trip, the first thing I do is look up the most current DK Eyewitness Travel book. Loved Vienna and this book did not fail us, again.

TL;DR: Many of the suggestions don't have map reference, which makes it hard to use/useless.This was my first and probably last Top 10 buy and the first book that I thought about returning. I always buy a traveling book before visiting a new city, not only for the duration of the trip, but it can be used as a simple log of places I have visited, afterwards. Short story, I won't be using this book in Vienna. And here is two samples for the lack of reference:Top 10 walks (p68): 4 of them refer to other pages. none of them have a map reference, only 2 gives some clue on how to get.Top 10 Hotels in *great location* (p143): 6 of them don't have a map reference.All in all, if you are not planning to use the map, it's a good book, but if you want a standalone book and map, it's not the book.

We just returned from Vienna where we spent 2 1/2 days. The Top 10 guide was perfect for our trip as it highlighted the most popular/best things to do. We hit over half of their recommended Top 10 list and had an absolutley wonderful visit (snow and all). If you are going to be visiting Vienna for more than 3 days, however, I'd recommend you get the "full" version of the Eyewitness Vienna guide. :)

I purchased these for my daughter and friends upon their request. They found these books to be extremely well done and helpful. They said the maps and additional info for the country made getting around and sightseeing a breeze. As a matter of fact, they enjoyed them so much that they will not allow me to post and resell them! They are going to keep them for perhaps a future trip! Money well spent!

Like the rest of the series, Vienna is also great. Enough detail for a weekend or week visit. True everything to see/do in Vienna isn't listed, but plenty is and it is a great starting reference for first-time or repeat visitors. We'll keep buying/using these Top 10 guides.

Born Ethiopian, raised Swedish, and now one of New York City's top chefs, Samuelsson (Aquavit: And the New Scandinavian Cuisine) has written an exotic yet accessible book that will hasten the coming of the African fusion cookery he envisions. His 204 recipes and 258 color photos are enriched with personal and political history; as in his many condiments and sauces, the balance is right. While he stresses the diversity and bounty of the second-largest continent, he repeatedly describes African cuisine as poor people's cooking, crafted with simple tools and necessarily emphasizing starches, vegetables and big flavors. Whether it's rosemary for Honey Bread or turmeric, ginger and cinnamon in his Vegetable Samosas, herbs and spices are always sauteed in oil or tossed in a hot dry pan, to intensify and mellow. He even proposes toasting the cinnamon for the whipped cream accompanying his Ethiopian Chocolate Rum Cake. The recipe for the cake is typical: the batter is prepared in a single bowl, mixed with a spoon, and bakes up moist and gingerbread-like, with great keeping properties. This is a frustrating cookbook. I think it could be an AMAZING cookbook. But only about a tenth of the pics are actually of the food!!! I treasure the diversity and beauty of the pics of people from Africa. But im not interested in seeing a cookbook almost exclusively w pics of people and not of the food! If its the soul of a new cuisine please put in pics of the cuisine. My first scan through i actually thought there were few recipes. Second time i realized there are a lot of recipes - just paired w extraneous albeit gorgeous pics of people. Food. Food food food. If i had seen this book in the store i would have skipped it but went out on that online limb. Hopefully there will be recipes im interested in trying to justify the $$$ but i will have to sift through without guidance from the many beautiful non-food related pics. I have attached an example from the book showing the recipe for crispy avocado to demonstrate. GREAT photo! NOT a crispy avocado!!!

I bought this book because I was interested in learning how to cook a few of the staples of Ethiopian cooking. Although this is not a book about Ethiopian cooking, it does contain a handful of good Ethiopian recipes. There is no recipe for the Ethiopian staple ingredient known as shiro. And the recipe for the ubiquitous (in Ethiopian terms) flat bread injera is definitely tailored to western ingredients and techniques. There is a recipe for the spicy chicken dish Doro Wat. Beyond Ethiopian cooking, recipes that caught my attention include Jerk Chicken, Harissa Roasted Turkey Breast, and a curry style Lamb Dish. These dishes hale from other parts of Africa.This is book about African cooking, with recipes from Ethiopia, Morocco, Senegal, as well as the African diaspora in the West Indies and Brooklyn. The author, Marcus Samuelsson, was born in north Africa and was adopted by Swedish parents. He went on to own the restaurant Aquavit in New York. This book is, in one sense, a cook book: it has over 200 recipes. But it is more Samuelsson travelled to many parts of the African continent to collect information about dishes and cooking techniques, and he tells his travel stories in this book. So at another level way we find the book as a story about a chef reconnecting with his roots. The theme of food and cooking as a connective social activity weaves a tight underlying structure in the book, making it somehow richer than it would be as just another list of recipes.I find it all but impossible to cook recipes exactly as I find them in any book. Instead, I use them as jumping off points for new recipes in my own kitchen. I consider a cookbook especially good if it contains at least one recipe for a food that I love to cook and that I commit to regular practice. Few cookbooks manage to do this. I expect this one to yield at least two or three - and that would put it far above average.I can recommend this book to any cook who likes to take on new ideas and integrate them into their own cooking life. The recipes are clearly explained and the techniques are completely accessible to any cook. Those who don't like new things or who hate exotic spice mixes may find the recipes to feel strange. Still, anyone who wants to be reminded about how food, cooking, and eating can serve to bind us together is likely to find this book a source of inspiration.

I'm not at all familiar with most African cuisine except North African and Ethiopian; I purchased this book hoping to find some good recipes for Ethiopian dishes. I was pleased to find that not only does it contain what I was looking for, but there's a ton of other wonderfully spicy, tangy, and flavorful dishes to try from other regions and countries of Africa. I've been looking for a good recipe for niter qibe, the spiced clarified butter that's the basis of so many Ethiopian dishes, and this book contains an awesome recipe--now I always have a tupperware in my fridge ready to use. There's also an injera recipe that doesn't require 2 days of fermentation, but uses yogurt and club soda to achieve the signature spongy texture--I tried it out and got great results! These recipes are big on spice and bold flavors, so it's good if you have a place where you can buy spices in bulk and invest in a coffee grinder that you can use for grinding whole spices (just don't use it for coffee too, like I found out one time, the hard way!). Some favorites in our house include: harissa-roasted turkey breast, jerk chicken, spicy okra salad, Ethiopian beef stew (tibs), and Tanzanian fish stew.Since the dishes are so reliant on spices and spice mixtures, I like that these are situated in the beginning of the book, rather than listed at the end. It's a minor stylistic thing, I'll admit, but I think it's better positioning. Most of the recipes are accompanied by helpful photos that give you an approximation of how the dish should look--I greatly appreciate this, especially when trying out an unfamiliar cuisine or technique. Some cookbooks read more like a National Geographic issue than a proper cookbook, letting the photography of scenery and people dominate at the expense and space of the recipes. But in this book, the photographs are a visual supplement and give you a glimpse of the scenery, people, and culture of the areas highlighted in the book.
