My 8 year old daughter loves George Washington. I originally brought it for her book report to cut out pictures and facts but she loved the book soo much that she didn't want to cut it at all! Great read for kids.

My daughter was doing a 1st grade project on George Washington. I got this book for her to do research. She loved it! She is now obsessed with George Washington and American history. The photos in the book are wonderful and the content is educational and entertaining. Highly recommend!

I bought this for a first grader going into second grade. It was easy reading with lots of pictures. It is paperback so easy take along in the car. An added bonus: He may learn something beyond video games.

Got this for a book report for my 1st grader. Was easy to read, explain and understand for a 6 y/o. Great pictures and even better information.

Very dense and a difficult read. Not much for clear explanation on logic. Meaning in Language by Alan Cruise is a much better refresher.

"Whistling in the dark is not the method of true philosophy" – Quine, *Word and Object*Willard van Orman Quine's 1960 work *Word and Object* is one of the most famous documents of American philosophy. Quine, an Ohio native who studied with Carnap in Vienna and taught mathematical logic and philosophy at Harvard for a half-century, was legendary for being a controversialist who attacked the "analytic-synthetic" distinction and many other philosophical commonplaces; he is also a fine stylist of American prose, one so inimitable as to even discourage quotations. Although he wrote scores of papers and many monograph-length books, *Word and Object* is by far his most noted effort, containing famous remarks on the "indeterminacy of translation" philosophy grad students still joust at today.However famous it and its constituent parts are, I think the general thrust of the book is not well understood, particularly now that it is old enough to be available in a 50th anniversary edition; I am tempted to describe it as a "Jamesian essay on the Tarskian theory of truth", a book which is both "mannered" and searching, even or perhaps especially compared to Quine's programmatic essays. This 250-page book has seven chapters, some of which have attracted more attention than others over the years: I will offer brief remarks on each. [As regards this new edition, I am pleased to see that MIT Press has retained some of the features that made the original edition an *objet d'art* but I feel that both Patricia Churchland's Foreword and Dagfinn Føllesdal's Preface are disrespectful to the book, which is written in a compass wider than its immediate reception or the vicissitudes of Quine's decline in advanced old age.]1. "Language and Truth"The book begins with a discussion of the merest "direction towards the world", in terms of Quine's famous "holism" about what we do and do not know: although he was always quite explicit about a non-dogmatic empiricism where knowledge of the world begins at "retinal impressions" and suchlike, many people unfamiliar with the "Quine-Duhem thesis" would not understand the idea–often couched in the form of the metaphorical parable from Neurath which begins *Word and Object*–that no particular part of our knowledge of the world is immune to revision, even seemingly "self-evident truths" far from the madding crowd of observed physical objects. This chapter tries to justify a basic "objectivism" about reality, a highly sublimated concordance with Tarski's version of the correspondence theory of truth, while avoiding the snares then recently set for "realists" by Wittgenstein in the *Philosophical Investigations*.2. "Translation and Meaning""Translation and Meaning" is the absolutely famous chapter of *Word and Object*, one whose quips still amuse young philosophers and which in the '60s and '70s generated a great deal of discussion about "radical translation" (and then, in the hands of Quine's students Davidson and David Lewis, about the slightly different concept of "radical interpretation"). According to Quine, the only slightly fanciful thought-experiment of a field anthropologist trying to learn a wholly foreign language brings home the point that theory is always underdetermined by the facts: when we hear a "native" exclaim "Gavagai" at the sight of a rabbit, we ultimately have no idea what about the appearing of the rabbit they are remarking upon (for all we know, they have a great enthusiasm for "undetached rabbit parts").3. "The Ontogenesis of Reference"This is the least-well-known of the chapters of the book, and one whose background is not guaranteed to make sense to the contemporary reader: that is to say, Quine's discussion of the topic of reference (in the sense of the "denotation" of a term) is an implicit critique of the then-newly published theory of P.F. Strawson in his *Individuals*. Strawson believed in a "descriptive metaphysics" which justified a theoretical conservatism about physical objects and persons as ground-floor elements of our "conceptual scheme"; Quine was also cognizant of the reality of physical objects and persons, but he wanted to tell a sophisticated behavioristic story about the usefulness of singular terms (using "divided reference") and predicates.4. "Vagaries of Reference"Following Timothy Williamson's book on the topic, "vagueness" became a major topic of research in recent philosophy; Quine–who is honored by contemporary metaphysicians as "one of their own" though it is not exactly clear to me why–was there first, and other parts of referential discourse where "things fall apart" (like "referentially opaque" statements of belief and intention, in which different descriptions of the object of the "propositional attitude" cannot be substituted for each other) are addressed.5. "Regimentation"Modern logic *is* quantificational logic: it did not exist before Frege's introduction of the quantifiers in his 1879 *Begriffsschrift*, and that is because the scope and power of multiply quantified statements was finally enough to formalize nearly all of mathematical reasoning. Not every linguistic phenomenon yields as easily to axiomatization as "ring theory", though, and in this chapter Quine spends a great deal of time on "indexicality" (statements tied to particular times and places) and "vacuous terms" like Pegasus, things we can "talk about" even if they have never existed. (Following the work of Kripke and Kaplan at the beginning of the '70s discussion of these topics took a definitive turn away from Quine's views, and this is the least relevant of the chapters.)6. "Flight from Intension"Quine, early and late, was an enemy of "modal logic"–the study of necessity and possibility as precisely codified in "operators" usually rendered as a diamond and a box–and here he marshals all his criticisms of the new-fangled reasoning; finally, at the end of the chapter he moves from "intensional" to "intentional" issues, this being the idiom for discussing conscious mental states introduced into modern philosophy by Franz Brentano, and claims (in a move which proved fateful for the "eliminative materialists" about the mind) that statements of belief and desire can in no way be coherently systematized in any "psychology".7. "Ontic Decision"The final chapter picks up the issues of "theory choice" which began the book, now with a full armamentarium of metalinguistic analysis to turn upon them. Quine's essential attitude to the question of "abstract objects" like numbers was one of pragmatism: those that caused scientific theory to better cohere better be included as acceptable "posits", those like "sakes" that mattered not at all ought to be "deprecated". The book closes with Quine's famous criticism-homage to Carnap's strategy of semantic ascent, and the final paragraph begins thusly: "The philosopher's task differs from the others', then, in detail; but in no such drastic way as those suppose who imagine for the philosopher a vantage point outside the conceptual scheme that he takes in charge. There is no such cosmic exile."

Willard Van Orman Quine (1908-2000) was an American philosopher and logician who taught at Harvard University, and wrote many books such as From a Logical Point of View: Logici-Philosophical Essays,The Web of Belief, etc.He wrote in the Preface to this 1960 book, “Language is a social art. In acquiring it we have to depend entirely on intersubjectively available cues as to what to say and when. Hence there is no justification for collating linguistic meanings, unless in terms of men’s dispositions to respond overtly to socially observable stimulations. An effect or recognizing this limitation is that the enterprise of translation is found to be involved in a certain systematic indeterminacy… The indeterminacy of translation invests even the question what objects to construe a term as true of. Studies of the semantics of reference consequently turn out to make sense only when directed upon substantially our language, from within. But we do remain free to reflect, thus parochially, on the development and structure of our own referential apparatus…” (Pg. ix)He points out, “We cannot strip away the conceptual trappings sentence by sentence and leave a description of the conceptual world, and man as a part of it, and thus find out what cues he would have of what goes on around him. Subtracting his cues from his world view, we get man’s net contribution to the difference. This difference marks the extent of man’s conceptual sovereignty---the domain within which he can revise theory while saving the data.” (Pg. 5)He explains, “The philosophical doctrine of the infallibility of observation sentences is sustained under our version. For there is scope for error and dispute only insofar as the connections with experience whereby sentences are appraised are multifarious and indirect, mediated through time by theory in conflicting ways; there is none insofar as verdicts to a sentence are directly keyed to present stimulation… Our version of observation sentences departs from a philosophical tradition in allowing the sentences to be about ordinary things instead of requiring them to report sense data…” (Pg. 44)He argues, “There are philosophers who stoutly maintain that ‘exists’ said of numbers, classes, and the like and ‘exists’ said of material objects are two usages of an ambiguous term ‘exists.’ What mainly baffles me is the stoutness of their maintenance. What can they possibly count as evidence? Why not view ‘true’ as unambiguous but very general, and recognize the difference true logical laws and true confessions as a difference merely between logical laws and confessions? And correspondingly for existence?” (Pg. 131)He suggests, “The primary distinction of eternal sentences is that they are the repository of truth itself, so and of all science. Insofar as a sentence can be said simply to be true, and not just true now or in this month, it is an eternal sentence. When our objective is an austere canonical form for the system of the world, we are not to rest with the renunciation of propositional attitudes and the subjunctive conditional; we must renounce also the indicator words and other sources of truth-value fluctuation.” (Pg. 227-228)He states, “This construction is paradigmatic of what we are most typically up to when in a philosophical spirit we offer an ‘analysis’ or ‘explication’ of some hitherto inadequately formulated ‘idea’ or expression. We do not claim synonomy. We do not claim to make clear and explicit what the users of the unclear expression had unconsciously in mind all along. We do not expose hidden meanings, as the words ‘analysis’ and ‘explication’ would suggest; we supply lacks. We fix on the particular functions of the unclear expression that make it worth troubling about, and then devise a substitute, clear and couched in terms of our liking, that fills those functions. Beyond those conditions of partial agreement, dictated by our interests and purposes, any traits of the explicans come under the head of ‘don’t cares.’” (Pg. 258-259)This is one of Quine’s most widely-discussed works, and will be of keen interest to students of analytical philosophy.

Written by one of the leading behavioral experts in the field. A must for anyone with a problem child, in medicine or psychology, social or justice work...it is a recognized primer for the topic of Fetal Alcohol Syndrome.

Excellent, I recommend it to anyone who is looking for information about FAS. Very thorough examination of the effects of alcohol on the brain with many examples.

This is a very good book except that 3 pages were missing that had important information I was wanting to read.

Although nothing will "fix" my adopted son. This book helps me understand why he does the things he does. Sad

Dr. Streissguth is one of the pioneers in the identification and treatment of Fetal Alcohol Syndrome and the entire spectrum of congenital damage arising from in-utero exposure to alcohol. 25 years after the identification of this common and devastating disability, most efforts in the academic community still focus on definition and diagnosis, with relatively little attention paid to treatment. Dr. Streissguth stands atop the heap in extending her basic science research into the actual lives of affected individuals, their families, and the communities in which they live. I consider her the foremost authority in the academic community on exploring pragmatic options for helping affected individuals, families, and community.This little volume is jam packed with useful information.

This is a good book if you don't know much about FAS. It would have been more helpful for me to read 3 years ago when I first adopted my 3 daughters from Ukraine. At the time the first Dr. didn't think that they had FAS, but after about 9 months, I read the symptoms and felt like they did. Anyway, hopefully pregnant women would read it and understand the effects of alcohol on pregnancy!

This is a good match for how I prefer to learn. It is unlike most technical books I've used. If you're looking for a technical reference, this might not be the way to go. But if you want hands-on learning that doesn't talk down to the user, this is a great choice. Here are some aspects I've really appreciated:* Each chapter makes sure you accomplish something, whether it's the installation and setup of your environment, or an actual working piece of software.* Time is taken to explain what's actually going on. Rather than "here, type this, it works", the author takes the approach of "here, type this, and here's what's going on under the hood." That means a lot to me, because I don't like code that I can't understand.* The book's approach encourages tinkering. This is a natural consequence of explaining to the user how and why things work: once you understand, you feel more free to play around with your software.I've not finished the book yet, but really like it so far. I warmed up immediately to the way the author approaches learning.

This manual is great for those wanting to expand their knowledge of Agile Web Development. I am fairly new, but understand the basics (HTML) so I got this book to help broaden my knowledge.I felt each chapter progressed nicely, building from one to the other and making sure you had hands on practice to accomplish. It also did well going to the why's behind the what's. Instead of just fixing the problem, it really help to have an explanation of the back end work.

This book is great for those who already know web development coming from some other framework but it's not for those who are completely new. If you don't know your HTML from your CSS or your HTTP from your SSH, then you will have some trouble understanding what's happening.People have always recommended Michael Hartl's book for beginners, but I don't recommend that book because it goes into some heavy Ruby development especially in the later sections where you need to write some authentication features. It would have been more helpful just to use the Devise gem and focus on some other parts of Rails.For those who are familiar with Rails or web development in general, this book is a great resource. It walks you through creating a shopping web app, specifically, a Pragmatic Book shopping site. It covers soup to nuts including using the latest 5.1 technologies such as Webpacker and Action Cable. Using React components to dynamically update your front-end. The book touches on all of these topics and the rational for its usage. It doesn't go into those topics in depth but gives you a brief overview of how to use it.Overall, the book is pretty comprehensive and covers a lot of ground, much more so than Hartl's book. There are​ lots of insights and gotchas that help developers to understand some of the more advanced features. It also covers Rails best practices such as creating and using helper methods to keep your front end clean.Because this book is comprehensive, certain sections, like the sections on deploying to production feels a bit rushed. It's definitely not as detailed in explaining the steps involved. However, it strikes a good balance in keeping to book to a reasonable length and enough insights for you to understand how the different pieces all fit together.

The one drawback about this book is that novice web devs coming in might have some difficulty. However, even a basic dev who understands the framing should be able to get this and create a website. The overall approach is to walk the reader through creating an app for shopping - each chapter moves the reader closer to app completion. It covers what was then (and still mostly is) the most recent approaches, and explains why those are the way to go. It's not a super in-depth, but gives enough information and background. Lots of good insights here.

I'm currently going through the book and I'm impressed. Currently I'm a .NET developer looking to transition to Rails. Earlier in my career (8 years ago) I found such a transition daunting so I always failed to stick with it. Guess I just needed time because this book just feels right at this point in my career. No turning back.

I lived in NYC /Westchester / Nassau County during this time. The book brought back memories and gave me a better understanding of that era as well as my life I found the book easy to read as well as entertaining. The author gets to the point of each topic. I found the book humorous. Most of all, what I thought was going on with NYC wasn't what was really going on. Things weren't what I thought they were. Ia a sense this book is a catharsis A must read !

"Fun City" was a great book about New York in the late 60's. The book threads through the Championship seasons of the Jets, Mets and Knicks as well as the mayorship of John Lindsay. Highly recommended

even though I was a teenager during this time and lived through it, I do not remember alot of what went on during the early sixties. very informative and entertaining. I am a yankee fan but never a jets or ny giant fan.

Brought me back to those days. Good informative account of the 60's and 70's in NYC sports and politics. Enjoyed it.

I was a very young child, but I remember women everywhere going crazy over Joe Namath. I guess this book brought back much of my youth.

"Fun City" ends with a great quote from famed New York writer Jimmy Breslin from 1969, "When you live in fires and funerals and strikes and rats and crowds and people screaming in the night, sports is the only thing that makes any sense."Following the rise of liberal Republican mayor John Lindsay, Alabama star QB Joe Namath landing with the upstart Jets of the AFL, Tom Seaver and the Mets, and the rise of New York Knicks, culminating with all three of those franchises winning a championship in an 18-month period of of January, 1969 to mid-1970, "Fun City" provides a fascinating look at the anti-establishment ethos of the mid to late 1960s in New York.The New York football Giants were in decline in the same period, as were the Yankees, who were eventually sold to "corporate" CBS. And after the lengthy Robert Wagner Mayoral era, John Lindsay, a blueblood Upper East side councilman, won the New York mayoral election in 1965. New York was indeed ready for "fun."The book transports the reader back to these heady days of New York City from Namath's fur coat on the sidelines and his nightclubbing antics to Lindsay's unpreparedness for a monster snowstorm to strikes and protests.The reader learns of the many knee surgeries of Namath before and during his Jets career, how the Mets and Shea Stadium rose from the departure of the Brooklyn Dodgers, and the Knicks latest incarnation of Madison Square Garden at 50th and 8th that opened in 1968. We hear of the passion of the new Mets fans from sportswriter Robert Lipsyte: "...The Metophile is a dreamer. He believes that one day he will punch that arrogant foreman at the plant square on his fat nose; that he will get the last word with his foie; that he will win the Irish sweepstakes; that the Mets will start a winning streak.." And we see the courage of Joe Namath in the 1968 AFL Championship game again, fighting off hits from Ben Davidson and Ike Lassiter, and a concussion, to propel his team to victory into Super Bowl III, perhaps the greatest sports upset ever.But the book is not just about the teams and their quests for championships; it's about the change in the city (and country) from massive societal change to the war in Vietnam. Yet this tale is all intertwined from Knicks players attending a "Moratorium Day" protest in Cincinnati on October 15, 1969,to Tom Seaver's arrival the same day to Shea Stadium, where he was informed by fellow pitcher Tug McGraw that some of Seaver's comments were sensationalized on a related pamphlet being handed outside the stadium. (Seaver nevertheless put the distraction aside to pitch a 10-inning complete game victory in Game 4 of the World Series that day, giving his team a 3-1 lead.)My own novel, "The Naive Guys," concludes in the New York of June, 1994, with both the hockey Rangers and basketball Knicks striving for championships. As great as that time was, Deveney's world seems a hell of a lot more fun:-)"Fun City," so named for Lindsay's description of the City, is an excellent, fun, exhilarating read. It is well worth the investment of your time for a magical trip back to the New York of the past, but not long past. Perhaps Mr. Deveney will have to work on a sequel of sorts in the mid teens of the 2010s?

Two stories and several half-stories do not make a connected book. Some interesting anecdotes but no real unified tale. I expected moreThe two stories are a decent story about John Lindsay and his mayoralty's 1st term, how he got the job and what he tried to do. The other is about the Jets in the mid-60's during the Werblin era. Half-stories are of the Knicks and the Mets.But it wasn't the sports teams that got Lindsay re-elected, it was the lack of any real opposition and white gratitude that there were no major NY riots in the 60s. Deveney pretty much admits that.I grew up in that era too, affected by the massive teacher's strike in Fall, 1968.

This is another winner. I just love the characters in This series. They are so real you want to meet them. She writes wonderful mysteries and great storylines in every book.
