“Twilight in Los Angeles” by Anna Deavere Smith offers insights from people who have lived through the riots in Los Angeles of 1992. Those riots broke out as protest against police brutality. The case of Rodney King was brought to court and the judges ruled that there was indeed violence and use of excess force with a deadly weapon. A year later in 1992, the police on trial were acquitted of the charges against them and riots broke out all over Los Angeles as the African American community were outraged at the decision.“Twilight LA” is told through many perspectives of individuals who lived through this time. These people may or may not have been involved with the riots, yet they were still affected by them. They tell the stories of themselves, family members, friends, all whom have been affected by the riots. Smith allows the readers to view this event in history from many perspectives and form their own opinions about it.Personally, I loved how many sides of the story she was able to collect. This was a mutual way for this event to be brought to attention. Everyone in The Los Angeles community was affected. This is a fantastic example of the diversity in California. I think. It also represents why people of different races thinks the way they do. In California there is a lot of stereotyping that goes around that eventually leads to some sort of racism. “Twilight LA” is able to bring a little reason into why and how some people (i.e the Korean Americans) feel about other communities (i.e. the African Americans). One line that stood out for me was from Mrs. Young-Soon Han. She says, “I wish I could live together with eh Blacks, but after the riots there were too much differences. The fire is still there how do you call it? Igni..igniting fire. It's still dere. It canuh burst out anytime” (Smith 249). This offers one person’s perspective on how she was affected by the riots. She did not participate in them but she was definitely a victim of the results. So after what part of the African American community has done to make her think this way, she continues to stand with her opinion on them and cannot really agree they they are a “Los Angeles community.” Another line that stood out comes from Rodney King’s aunt, Angela; she says, “We weren't raised like this. We weren't raised with no black and white thing. We were raised with all kinds of friends: Mexicans, Indians, Blacks, Whites, Chinese. You would never would have known that's something like this would happen to us. And now it's such a shock” (55). This reminds us that California has mostly been a pretty diverse state. People like Angela King acknowledges that there was a time where people did not care about race and that a community is one whole no matter the kinds of people that live in it. She also speaks of being “not raised like this.” This can represent so many things she spoke about in her section. I think. The most important was that this state was not raised to hate so seeing something like police brutality splitting up the diverse community is very disappointing for her. She also says (to her nephew), “Boy, you sure you ain't got some African in you?” (53). She speaks of a time where her and her family are fishing in Sacramento and Rodney is said to be “hunting” the fish and catching them with his bare hands while everyone else are using poles. I think she brings this up to say that they live in a time where people are raised to be “civil” and they don't really things that they primal ancestors would. It shows that not just African Americans, but everyone in the community should have handled this situation in a more civil manner rather than violence and riots. I love how these lines could have been about anyone during those times. It doesn't even apply to just one specific group because everyone during that time was being “wild.” California (especially SoCal/LA) has been pretty known for its diversity, but events like the 1992 riots should be known to see what the state had to go through to get to where it is now. This book really shows a view into what California (LA) was like during that time and the people who live in the community are just as important to the history. This play offers not only offers perspective but background and history to many types of people in the state. The communities were thrown off balance because of one catalyst event. This might have changed the opinions of some people and Anna Deavere Smith was able to showcase all of those perspectives in her book(play).

I read this book in my English 1A class.It was easy to read and very interesting.The 1992 events of Los Angeles are evoked from so many points of view.It shows how people are divided but still have hope that things are going to improve.For any one which is interested in the riots of 92 or making research on the subject, this book is a "must have".

Gustavo Gutiérrez Merino (born 1928) is a Peruvian theologian and Dominican priest who is regarded as the founder of Liberation Theology. He holds the John Cardinal O'Hara Professorship of Theology at the University of Notre Dame. He has written other books such as A Theology of Liberation,We Drink from Our Own Wells: The Spiritual Journey of a People,On the Side of the Poor: The Theology of Liberation, etc. [NOTE: page numbers below refer to the original 1979 240-page edition.]The publishers wrote in the Foreword to this 1979 book, “[We] are pleased to publish this compilation of eight works by Gustavo Gutiérrez, the pioneer of liberation theology in Latin America. The eight selected texts represent complementary moments and focuses on his theological reflection from 1969 to the present. What these moments and focuses have in common in their point of departure, their presence ‘from within’---their author’s continuous attention to the particular set of problems being encountered and worked on in the Latin American church through the course of those so rich and demanding years… The author has reviewed all these texts for publication as a single collection, making numerous revisions and updating.”In the first essay, Gutiérrez notes, “our reading of the Bible will be a MILITANT reading. The great questions about the word of the Lord arise out of Christian practice. It is time to reclaim this militant reading of the word of God in faith. It is time to open the Bible and read it from the perspective of ‘those who are persecuted in the cause of right’ [Mt 5:10], from the perspective of the condemned human beings of the earth---for, after all, theirs is the kingdom of heaven. But peace presupposed the establishment of justice, the defense of the rights of the poor, the punishment of oppressors, and a life free from the fear of enslavement A benighted spiritualization has often caused us to forget the human power imbedded in the messianic promises and the transforming effect they might have on unjust social structures. The conquest of poverty and the abolition of exploitation are signs of the Messiah’s arrival and presence… The messianic promises establish a close tie between the kingdom of God and living conditions that are worthy of human beings. God’s kingdom and social injustice are incompatible.” (Pg. 32)_In another essay, he explains, “The theology of liberation is an attempt to understand the faith from within the concrete historical, liberating, and subversive praxis of the poor of this world---the exploited classes, despised ethnic groups, and marginalized cultures. It is born of a disquieting, unsettling hope of liberation. It is born of the struggles, the failures, and the successes of the oppressed themselves. It is born of a manner of seeing oneself as daughters and sons of the Father, as a deep and demanding community of brothers and sisters… [This] is the reason why the theology of liberation, as reflection, takes a different approach to the relationship of practice with theory.” (Pg. 37)A later essays notes, “Only… in a revolutionary perspective, can one adequately understand the legitimate narrowing of the term---orientation to political power. All human reality, then, has a political dimension. To speak in this way… positively implies, the multidimensionality of the human being. For it is within the context of the political that the human being rises up as free and responsible being, as a truly human being, having a relationship with nature and with other human beings, as someone who takes up the reins of his or her own destiny, and goes out and transforms history.” (Pg. 47)He rejects the vow of poverty, pointing out, “The gospel, however, gained nothing. And the poor and exploited of this world gained nothing. For there was a graver---and more subtle---evil afoot here. Poverty was proclaimed as a Christian ideal. And … the door was open to all sorts of abuses. In the Bible, material poverty is a subhuman situation, the fruit of injustice and sin. This poverty should not be a Christian ideal… [It would] mean the justification, however unintentional, of the situation of injustice and exploitation that is the basic cause of poverty.” (Pg. 54)He argues, “‘Progressive’ theology seeks to answer the questions of the NONBELIEVER; liberation theology confronts the challenge of the NONPERSON. The spirit of modernity, typically skeptical, or even frankly nonbelieving, where religion is concerned, calls the faith into question by challenging the meaning of religion for human life… It takes its point of departure in its own proclamation of the modern freedoms. It prefers to situate the debate on religious terrain, attacking the philosophical presuppositions and historical truth of religion, along with the role of the church in traditional society.” (Pg. 92)He continues, “In the perspective of liberation theology, theology ‘comes second.’ We call theology ‘second act.’ ‘First act’ is involvement in historical liberation praxis, and the simple proclamation of the word in relation to that praxis…the theologian is to be an ‘organic intellectual,’ a thinker with organic links to the popular liberation undertaking, and with the Christian communities that live their faith by taking this historical task upon themselves as their own.” (Pg. 103)In a later essay, he asserts, “Thus political theology seeks to face up to the question of the modern story of freedom, enlightenment, and a Marxist critique of religion. It is a new kind of fundamental theology, one that … demands pubic notice for the Christian message… Today political theology has entered into fruitful dialogue with the theology of liberation, and interesting points of convergence are emerging. The first encounters, however, were uncomfortable---perhaps because the theological undertaking centered on the liberation process comes from a different purview… from an essential opposition … to the principal elements of the historical process we summarized…” (Pg. 184-185)In the final essay, he concludes, “The theology of liberation begins from the questions asked by the poor and plundered of the world… by those who are oppressed and marginalized precisely by the interlocutor of progressivist theology. I bought the Kindle version. This book is terrible.It starts out heavy on explanation about how the web works and such.Once it gets to you actually writing things with node and express, it devolves more into a "Do this.... and this will happen....""...Should happen..." is more accurate. The examples in the book are terrible. Often they don't work. Your next recourse is to look for the examples online, which require a few click throughs to actually download. When you get them, you discover they are out of sync with the book text. If you're lucky, you can compare the two and figure out how to make things work.I got to Hour 8 before I decided to try another resource, since I was spending more time frustrated trying to blindly troubleshoot the examples in the book, as opposed to getting a well-structured introduction and actually learning anything solid.

Overall this book makes for good reading.But then why 3 stars?Well for starters, the code in this book is outdated. You will feel the drag on your self-paced learning when you hit the chapters on Express.The code in these chapters are geared more towards V3.x of Express. And when you set up Expressand generate your first web application you will literally tear your hair out trying to figure out why things don't work as described.I compared the code in the book vs. the files generated in my Express application vs. the Express API documentation and realized that I was reading a book written for V3.x of Express whilst the one installed on my Surface Pro Tablet is V4.x . There are subtle and more pronounced differences between the two versions and instructions in this book for most part will not work with your Express application. Therefore here are some starters on some of the differences. For more details refer to this link - http://expressjs.com/guide/migrating-4.html1. Starting the Express Web Application is completely different.2. Editing .JADE view pages works best with Visual Studio (free version)3. When starting with a JADE page, make up your mind on whether you're going to use [space] or [Tab] for indentation4. Once you decide what your preference is, stick to it and DO NOT switch between [space] or [Tab] to avoid unpredictable behavior of the JADE engine!5 If a certain JADE tag does not work, the first test would be to add a DOT in front of it to see if it works6 Example: As shown in this book the inline script keyword does not work with v4.x, but script. works (notice a dot after the keyword here)7 The good part is that variables, FOR LOOPS, IF-ELSE constructs work as shown in the book and you should not have major issuesWith these workarounds, I've been successfully able to complete working on Chapter 06 of this book. As of now, I'm yet to try the mixins.

I wrote a review earlier, before I finished this book and bought a few other Node books... My initial criticism was pointed at the difficulty in getting "situated" with Node in the various environments that it is able to run in. Now I see, it's pretty difficult to cover that in the "24 Hours" format. This book is fantastic. Period. I'm transitioning from .NET to Node and JS frameworks and Georges book worked well for me. This book has become my NodeJS "Go To" book. If you're new to NodeJS, and want to get up to speed quickly and build from there, this is the book. So, part of this review is pointed at the "Code outdated and fails" review I saw with the 1 Star rating... It all works for me... And I'm a "newb"... Also... "Stuff" changes.... Updates, newer versions...If you want to get into NodeJS... Start here.Credit given where credit is due. George nailed it. Good job! I hope George writes a book that can take me / us to the next level :>

I have been through this book multiple times. I read it cover to cover on a plane / camping trip, then came home and went through it again actually doing the examples on a computer. Normally I find that intro books only skim the surface and I have a hard time actually using anything i learn in less trivial instances. This wasn't the case with this book. Some chapters give a very in depth overview, then the exercises at the end are very helpful.Other reviewers have complained about typos in the source code. I noticed a few, but I type the code examples, instead of copy paste and generally can spot them. I didn't run into anything that didn't work, with the exception of the Twitter API chapter. But that's because of changes on the Twitter side, not the fault of this book.FWIW: I'm an experienced JavaScript developer mainly using Backbone.js, but have had very little exposure to node.js.I definitely recommend this book to anyone interested in node.

This was a great introduction to Node.js, and very thorough. The only problem is that this book covers the express framework, which is an important part of the node ecosystem if you're interested in building web applications (think Sinatra for Rails) but the version covered is 2.5.8, and the current version has a different API, so you'll have a hard time getting the examples to work, but only on the sections that cover express.

This book has done a good job in teaching me how to get going on Node.js; and for that it deserves more than 3 stars.My main disappointment is how repetitive the examples are. Most of the time you will see the same code segment written in the text, and then re-written in the "try this out" box. So, the book is about 20-40% thicker in paper than it needs to be. And, many of the examples start over with a new project (with the same name), when they could be building on the prior versions of that. So, my low rating is due to the poor style/structure of the examples.

Author Betty Webb lives and writes her novels set in the same town where I reside. Desert Redemption therefore felt like I was variously reading the local newspaper with in-depth coverage of multiple incidents and listening to PI Lena Jones herself.Many of the geographic and cultural references are real places and real customs. Some aren't.Because I spent 12 (of my young adult) years involved in a fundamentalist Christian sect (cult, but not apocalyptic) many of the behavioral references, which Webb had well-researched, were eerily familiar.Dramatic situations resolved, but they weren't telegraphed beforehand. The characters are tremendous and the dialogue engaging.Great surprise ending. Thanks Betty Webb for bringing Lena Jones to life.

I have read all the Lena Jones series and loved everyone of them. Don't think I gave reviews to all, but only because I started one right after another, and forgot. Yes it can stand alone, but I would read them in order. The characters are wonderful, story lines are great and interesting. Betty Webb does know how to weave you into the story. I am very sad they are done now, but was glad to get the answers to all the question that each book left you with. I have read the Gunn Zoo series also, now I have to wait for the next in that series to come out!

Cults, runaway teens, emaciated bodies found on or near the Pima reservation. I loved this thoroughly satisfying conclusion to the ten-book saga of Lena Jones, in which many mysteries of her past are finally solved. It's a good idea to read the previous nine books before you start this one. If you are reading this one first, that's okay, but afterward you'll want to go back and read the others. It's a great series, set in the Arizona desert, with vividly portrayed characters, excellent prose, a fast pace, and well-crafted mystery plots.

Lena Jones and author Betty Webb. What can I say but keep writing, Ms. Webb! I know everyone is happy to know that Lena found her parents.I hope Lena's story doesn't end here. Ms. Webb you have more people to help through your writing.

Betty Webb is a bit of a Jekyll-and-Hyde. She writes the light and humorous Gunn Zoo mysteries that are a delight to read, and she writes the much darker Lena Jones series, much of the material of which came from her years as a reporter. I love both series, but my heart has always been with Lena, partly because of how Webb depicts Arizona and the Phoenix metropolitan area. Webb's Lena Jones series has been consistently excellent, often dealing with important topics like polygamy, and because of her past, Lena is always on the side of children.It hurt to read Desert Redemption knowing that it's the last book in the series. I haven't always agreed with what Lena has done, but she's become more than a friend through the years. Someone is always telling Lena "You can't do everything" to which she always replies, "But I can always try." You have to have a great deal of respect for someone like that. Everything she's done, everything she's suffered, everything she's fought for, has all led her to the final outcome of this book. Desert Redemption is a bone-deep, satisfying conclusion to this series-- and it contains The Best Last Sentence of a book or series ever. You can read it as a standalone, but I sincerely hope you don't cheat yourself. If you and Lena haven't met, start with Desert Noir.

“Desert Redemption” by Betty Webb is the tenth and final installment in the “Lena Jones Mystery” series. Regular readers will anxiously read for the wrap up of several backstories. New readers should not be discouraged; “Desert Redemption” can be enjoyed on its own, and Webb has included all the background information necessary to follow along with the exploits of Lena and Jimmy.Lena Jones and Jimmy Sisiwan are living in an Airstream on the wild expanse of the Salt River Pima / Maricopa Indian Reservation with their horses and cats. Jimmy is building a house, a three-bedroom house, just for them. Lena and Jimmy are partners in Desert Investigations. Lena, like most former foster kids, does not handle the change well, even when the change is for the better, but she is devoted to Jimmy.“I still couldn’t figure out why it had taken me so long to love him, why I’d taken so many side roads with so many men. Thank God— who maybe did exist, after all— I’d finally come to my senses.”The story is character driven, and the action is presented in Lena’s first-person narrative. Readers learn about people she meets and places she goes through her conversations and observations. In alternating chapters, she recounts dreams, memories, and nightmares from thirty-five years earlier. It is now time for Lena to face her past, and she finally retrieves the cardboard banker’s box of childhood memories that had been temporarily shoved away.Every day, Desert Investigations fields phone calls from the artists, residents, parents, politicians, and general Scottsdale citizenry who have been “done wrong.” Harold Slow Horse, a friend, is worried that his ex-wife has become involved with a cult masquerading as a retreat or health resort for new back-to-the-landers who want to get off the grid. The daughter of a local political candidate has disappeared along with her boyfriend. The body of an unidentified young woman has been found on the Res. Multiple investigations weave in and out of the story, interlinking and deviating as Lena and Jimmy explore the social problems, criminal activities, and personal tragedies that bring clients to Desert Investigations. They diligently search, but find more questions than answers. Difficulties intensify; the body count escalates, and not every investigation has a successful conclusion.Through Webb’s words, the beauty and the geography of the area jump from every page.“Mother Nature’s wild citizens, wilder even than the local teens, greeted the day’s glory with joy and trepidation. Ground squirrels, jackrabbits, and deer mice scurried between various kinds of cacti, while a chorale of birds sang from mesquite and ironwood trees. In the lightening sky above, a bald eagle drifted along a thermal, deciding which scurrying creature to kill first.”In “Desert Redemption,” Webb brings a startling closure to Lena’s troubled past and things might just finally work out for Lena. I was given a review copy of “Desert Redemption” by Betty Webb and Poisoned Pen Press. The book has a nice shout-out to “Y Is for Yesterday” as Lena reads Sue Grafton’s final book, and laments that she must say farewell to Kinsey Millhone, as do we all. Alas, it is time for readers to say goodbye Lena Jones as well, ten wonderful books, and many, many wonderful stories.

Bad news first: Book 3 isn't out, yet.Although I think one can read this as a stand alone book, by starting with Blood on the Tracks, the first in the series, one will get a much better, and deeper understanding of who Sydney Rose Parnell and Clyde are.If you want a well-researched and excellently crafted book, this is the one for you. I found myself laughing in a couple of places, and crying in a couple of places, and there was one sequence where I had to read with my eyes closed! Do you have any idea how difficult that is?Sydney, our heroine, is damaged. She is an "ex" Marine, with her tours in the Mortuary Services in Iraq. Yeah, you'd be damaged, too. Clyde, her faithful K9 companion, is also an "ex" Marine and Iraq war veteran. He's not quite as damaged as she is.I'm not sure if this book is a little darker than Blood on the Tracks, or if it's because I forced myself to read it more slowly, instead of inhaling it in one sitting, therefore getting more of the story. It is very intense, gritty. And oh-so-hard to put down.Sydney is still collecting and living with her ghosts, is in therapy at the VA, and finds herself embroiled in another murder on her tracks, and a race against time to find the murderer and save a missing child. There is murder and mayhem, though it's germane to the story, not gratuitous. In fact, much is left to your own imagination.We get more of Sydney's thoughts from her journal entries, many of which appear as epigraphs to each chapter. She is dealing with her PTSD, but it costs her.Personally, I love having a heroine that I can actually believe in. She isn't perfect. She isn't the Ice Woman. She's a veteran with issues she must learn to live with, and she is learning. If you, or someone you know, have PTSD, this might be a helpful book. Yes, it may bring up flashbacks, but you may learn a bit from how Sydney handles hers. And, if you are a vet, thank you for your service.The ending of this book leaves it wide open for Book 3. Which will not be available soon enough to suit me. I think it highly unfair that even though I took my time reading this book, it still takes her longer to write one than for me to read it.

Today’s literary field is covered with about a half million books a year, and it seems many writers believe all they have to do is sit down at a keyboard and type. They could learn a thing or two from Barbara Nickless.Her new book, “Dead Stop,” is impeccably researched. From police procedural aspects to railroad facts and even right down to the mental challenges faced by her lead character, Sydney Rose Parnell, Ms. Nickless has inserted more than enough information to breathe life into this novel and make it real. But the list of good things about this book doesn’t stop there.Sydney Parnell’s character is complicated, and the author allows her to share everything. Some of the minor characters are only in scenes briefly, yet just as when we meet someone in person, readers are privy to a range of personality indicators run through Sydney’s filters. Having well-defined characters, even the ones who are only going to be around for a few pages, wakes the book up and brings it to life.The plot is intense and very believable. The entire story takes place over a few days, as Sydney hunts for both a missing child and a deranged killer. A second mystery unfolds and Ms. Nickless reveals that there is a tangible back story, with potentially more murders that could be connected with current events. Sydney works desperately, racing against time to unwind all the threads. An interesting twist is Ms. Nickless choosing to give Sydney a canine partner. Clyde is an integral part of the novel, and the interplay between the dog and Sydney ranges from serious to humorous.If anything bothered me at all about this book, it was Sydney’s battle with her past. A war veteran assigned to Mortuary Affairs, she is confronted regularly by the manifestations of her more haunting experiences. While Ms. Nickless writes with excellence in describing the post-traumatic stress, there are so many other detective authors using this idea – saddling the main character with a physical or mental issue to deal with – that I can’t help but wish for Sydney to find a way through her troubles. Ms. Nickless is a gem of an author, and I believe she can give Sydney other interesting problems to deal with while leaving the PTSD issues behind.While “Dead Stop” is the second book in the series, it can be read as a standalone. There are a few references to the first story (“Blood on the Tracks”), although little of the main plot is revealed and one could conceivably read the two books in reverse order…though why would you want to? If you’re a fan of detective/suspense stories, you won’t do better than these two books by Barbara Nickless. Four-and-a-half, rounded to five stars.

Barbara Nickless follows up her initial novel featuring Sydney Parnell with a very good sequel, But, it isn't quite as compelling as the original. The first offering had atmospherics that were chilling, and there was the fascinating sub plot in Iraq that produced Parnell's PTSD. The personality disorder continues with what Parnell calls moral injury or guilt based upon the ghosts of her past in combat. Still this story is interesting, mysterious, complex, and spans several decades. Rose and her partner Clyde a Belgian Malinois and veteran of Iraqi combat face bombs, rifle power, and nature in their obsessive effort to save a child from a mass killer. Clyde is as important to the story as any character and the reader fears for Clyde as much as for Parnell. The story reaches a crescendo that will have you turning the pages as quickly as your fingers can bear. For me, 4.5 is about right. Maybe the original was just too good to match. Nickless is top notch.

I really like this author. She has written two books in this series which are two separate murder mysteries that are solved by a tenacious railroad detective who suffers from PTSD from her time in the military in "mortuary affairs". The author does an excellent job developing the characters in both books, particularly the young lady with PTSD, and the plots are well developed and very complex. There is a third book in the series coming out in fall of 2018 and it's pre-ordered for sure. You should start with Book 1 in the series to get the full dimension of the principal character but this volume 2 can stand on its own. The author's choice to have the main character working as a railroad detective and bringing in a lot of interesting railroad background is a unique and interesting choice. it was the reason I decided to order Book 1 and I was not disappointed.
