Don Libes's book put me in a bad mood, so I will be tough on him and only give 2 stars, although I debate with myself whether 2 or 3 is appropriate. In any case, I look at the current average of the reviews and I see 4 stars, and I think that is too generous. I do not want to base my review on the fact that the book made me sleepy, because that may be more a statement about me than the book. My beef is the author's inability to be a great pedagogue. He has hidden some fundamental information in a later part of the book that would appear at first to be for advanced users. And he has written that section with the lack of clarity that other reviewers have complained about. "Sending Without Echoing" is in Chapter 12 "Send," on page 273.The general problem occurs when a send command is followed by an expect command. The normal echoing of the command sent will be processed by the expect command. This is not an issue in the simplest of examples, and the simplest of examples is all that one finds in the first 160 pages of the book. I ran into an issue when I had send followed by expect and my expect pattern was a regular expression. I contend that this problem should be highlighted BOLDLY at least by the end of the chapter on Regular Expressions. And probably in the preceding chapter on Glob Patterns. But again, the few examples of send followed by expect in the RE chapter do not highlight my issue.Typically, an index, and I have not gotten much pleasure from the index in this book, is not a solution for this because one would not know what to search for when the problem strikes. Only having basic information in the basic part of the book is a solution. The author simply was not born to be a great teacher, despite his otherwise formidable credentials.

I've been using this book for over 13 years, and it's still current, still very useful. My only issue is that the author needs to port it to more languages. I'd love to see a Don Libes version of Expect not only for TCL, but for Ruby, Python, and even the new Go (from google).THe best thing about expect is that instead of just firing off commands via shell script, it can interact with those commands. For example if you write a script that uses SSH, SSH can give you multiple different responses asking for passphrase, password, accept public key from server. Expect can work like a switch statement to handle all of these:expect { -re "\[P|p]assword" { send "$passwd\r" exp_continue } "Are you sure you want to continue connecting" { send "yes\r" } -re "\[P|p]assphrase" { send "$passphrase\r" exp_continue -re $prompt}Very simple.

I picked up Exploring Expect: A Tcl-based Toolkit for Automating Interactive Programs (Nutshell Handbooks) to get started on a regression-testing framework for common Unix programs. I was also very curious to see how Tcl was used to make this tool.To those ends, I wasn't disappointed. Expect makes it possible to automate tedious interactive work at the interface level. One can write concise, if not elegant, scripts. The cost of brevity, as if often the case with tools of this sort, is directly proportional to one's ignorance of expect's features and how they are implemented. And, if you'd like to approach Tcl by way of example, expect is as good a choice as I've come across.This guide, on the other hand, is often a discouraging chore to read. It's as if a shoebox of index cards, each detailing one specific feature, was sorted through and applied to flesh out the book's outline. Taken individually, these elements do make sense, providing sometimes useful examples, sometimes curious tangents, sometimes tedious cautionary tales of edge cases. Taken as a whole, it's difficult to see the forest for the trees in this guide. One could say this book is good reference material; it is indexed well, and the outline is clear enough. If it had a reference style, I could see that point.The book however has an expository form. It employs inline cross-references and footnotes where a sidebar or a simple table would have been a welcome relief from flipping back and forth. These research-style choices enforce the idea that the book was assembled from notes, and never quite realized as a whole guide. As a result, it's closer in feel to a set of anecdotes than a reference guide. It is a style that, as an instructor, I find often discourages users, primarily beginners or others who do not have a formal technical education.Expect is of course a valuable tool. I'm grateful to the author for making it and sharing it. I'm also surprised, however, that in the last 15 years no one has thought they could do a better job in explaining, and therefore promoting, such a useful application.

This book, along with Ousterhout and Sun's references on the www, comprise the triolgy that is jump-starting my learning tcl. I find the index compete and easy to use and I frequently jump all around the book gleaning little nuggets of information. I am also concurrently reading it cover-to-cover because I like Libes's style -- the way he throws in his programming phylosophy with his examples so you can see why he's doing something a certain way.I like how the author addresses issues of portability without obsessing on it.I really like the Exercises at the end of each chapter. I only wish the author would apply a difficulty rating to each exercise because sometimes I can't tell if an exercise is intrinsically very difficult (some are definitely so) or if I need to review parts of the chapter to see why I can't just instantly 'get it.' In any event, the exercises are stimulating and would require a long time and careful thought to do them all. I would buy a book that had the answers, with commentary, to all the exercises.

This book means a lot to me if only because of the extreme personal circumstances under which I nearly lost it to the Chinese government and the lengths I went to in order to keep it, and other books they deemed inappropriate. If you add my legal fees to the already steep cover price, it's by far the most expensive book I own. I don't regret it for a moment. The stories it tells are fascinating, and represent a truly imaginative, often disturbing twist on the classic stories of Peter Pan, Alice in Wonderland and The Wizard of Oz. The idea of having three characters experience sexual awakening in different ways and meet each other in their adulthood is truly unique and original. I enjoyed the illustrations that accompanied the story and my enjoyment wasn't mere base pleasure in something "pornographic" (though that's hard to avoid). It was in the way the stories overlap, the way the women change throughout the years, the way their modern stories and the looking glass contrast with their childhood recollections, and the way World War I looms over everything as a malignant spectre. This book now also perfectly represents to me what it means to be free -- free to take classic characters and change them, free to express art through sensuality, and free to read what you want to read without fear of reprisals and without the need to explain yourself to a bunch of Chinese customs inspectors. I grant this book 5 stars for its incredible power to defy the censors and to inspire me to fight for what's right.

This book is probably one of the most provocative things I've ever read! Alan Moore has such a mastery of the form, the way the images betray the words, the words betray the imagery. Such a beautiful look at the origins of prudishness, and the privilege Capitalism affords the rich to ignore society. The artwork is stunning, shifting from fin-de-siecle decadence to Tijuana Bible with the turn of a page. I'm a big fan of Moore's work, and often thought this to be a lark of his, but it's actually quite thematically hefty, with a lot to "say" (however you want to interpret that). This book made me uncomfortable. And I liked how it made me feel uncomfortable. And on top of that it's such a supremely enjoyable read. Really great. Strangely moving. I can't recommend it highly enough.

I am going to say Lost Girls was an oddly wonderful graphic novel. For those who want to call it porn, go right ahead. In my opinion, I think those who call it porn are degrading this book. I think of this more as erotica or a work of art. Yes, there is a ton of sex within the pages of this book and yes, it gets very graphic at times, but I think calling this porn is totally missing the point of the book. If you think this is porn then it sure has a lot going on for a simple sex story. It is actually smart if you read between the lines.I will be honestly I was afraid to read this comic book with all the sex. It has been on my list for a long time though. I love Alan Moore and the things he creates. The weirder the comic, the better I like it I find. Lost Girls had a ring of League of Extraordinary Gentlemen and his Promethean. The biggest reason I wanted to read this book was the fact used the stories of Alice in Wonderland, the Wizard of Oz, Peter Pan. Like the LXG comic books. It is like Promethean in the fact the art changes in each chapter, making it seem like there is several artist when there is only one.The plot of the book is a “what if” type of story. What if Alice, Dorothy, and Wendy meet each other for the first time? Alice is now an elderly woman who serves as the wisdom for the group, Wendy is a middle-aged woman and married to a prudish man, and Dorothy is now a young adult out exploring the world. They are no longer children trapped in fantasy worlds, but women with deeper desires and questions. It is the start of the First World War, they meet in Austria at a hotel where they tell stories of their past while exploring there sexual needs. It is all fun and games until the Archduke Franz Ferdinand and his wife Sophie are shot.I love how Alan Moore a Melinda Gebbie work together on Lost Girls. For Moore, this book is fairly easy to follow, unless you go down the rabbit hole and focus only on the sex. It is interesting how Moore writes women in his stories too. Usually there are very few, but they are usually the strongest compared to the men. Look at Mina form LXG or Silk Spectre from Watchmen for example. Unlike his other books, I did noticed a slight feminist side to Moore's writing, especially towards the end where the women were praising Alice for not having enough men in her life. I do wonder if Moore did this because he was working with his wife.The other thing about this book that surprised me was how it was intellectual. All I kept hearing about was the sex and controversy behind this book. No one bothered to go into the style of the book or how this was not just a story about sex. It rather shows me that the world still shames anything that involves sex or they put it down. Yet, when people like me read this kind stuff, I also see that it is about religious and moral questionings, social class, literature, the arts, history, realism, insanity, and loss of childhood innocence.The other part I liked about this book was how Moore wrote each character form each story using a non-fanatical element to them. In the Alice in Wonderland parts Alice is at a boarding school and her schoolmates have names of flowers. She is sexually harassed by her PE teacher who is is the counterpart of the Queen of Heart and the Red Queen. In the Wizard of Oz parts, Dorothy is at her farm with three farm helpers (similar to the MGM movie). She as an attraction to her Uncle Henry who is also the Wizard and she fears her Aunt Em who is also the Wicked Witch. With the Peter Pan, parts Wendy and her brothers are playing in a park and meet a boy named Peter. She fears a Captain who tries to rape her, but he fails.I just love the artwork in this book too. Melinda Gebbie does a wonderful job with her paints and colors. Some of the pages in this book should be framed and hung somewhere. Sometimes nudity and sex can bother me in a comic book. Mainly when the artist draws it as something dark and shameful to look at, but not with this book. Yes, some of the acts are horrific in real life, but as Monsieur Rougeur says, you have to decide that what is real and that which is fake. If you think like that, this book will not bother you as much.Honestly if you are a fan of Alan Moore and like his dark twisted mind, I highly recommend this book.

Ok, yes, I guess this could technically be listed as an "erotica" novel. But it's so much more. The envisioning of our old favorite fairy tales through the lens of feminine sexuality is very clever. It plays upon the Jungian idea that many fairy tales (little red riding hood, etc) ARE about seuxal awakening. This book works on many, many levels. I could see scholarly essays being written about it in the future.

First off, this book has been called pornography by some, and I just don't see it that way. I feel it falls more under the heading of erotica.That said it is very well written, and well drawn. The style of the art very much matches the style of writing, and changes slightly depending on the character perspective.As with other Alan Moore books, this one has a constant undercurrent that eventually becomes a larger part of the story. Very much worth the asking price, and certainly a fine read.

A different take on the traditional stories of Alice, Dorothy and Wendy, although the sexual nature of the book is not for the under-aged or those of prudish minds. I really liked some of the major illustrations throughout the story that showed the parallel of the original story and Moore's version. An interesting (and titillating!) read.

Updated for 19th Edition (last one, they retired):Well, the 19th edition is almost identical to the 18th edition with the exception of prices. That is not a bad thing. (I created a real index for 18th ed, so when I updated it the 19th edition I saw only a few pages were modified). They have FINALLY gotten realistic with pricing, the common pieces dropped by 50% and the rarer pieces dropped by 25% or so. I know dealers and hoarders don't like it, but sky-high prices stopped casual collectors dead in their tracks. With shipping, eBay prices come out about right for MINT pieces. Prices at retail don't regularly sell above this book price (you'll see plenty marked higher, but they've been sitting on the shelf for years.)This is the best book out there for dealers of depression glass, but the authors/publisher once again forgot a usable index or table of contents. To make matters worse, some patterns are still alphabetized as No. ###. No index of alternate names (some patterns have 3 or 4 commonly used names). The table of contents is the same as the alphabetical listing by page, totally useless. The official company name is the pattern name it is ordered under, regardless of the popularity of other names.Pictures are great. Verbiage for patterns normally indicates the marketability of the pattern, but wish there was a prominent "popularity score" above each color the pattern comes in. Some colors in some patterns have absolutely no buyers, at any price above a buck or two, which is an extremely valuable piece of information. Would recommend using --,-,+,++.They use a purist definition of depression, so you'll have to also buy the 40s 50s 60s book and the Elegant Glassware book to complete your reference of what is commonly known as depression glass (the Mauzy's book is much better at selecting patterns to include). There are pictures for about 1/2 of the pieces available, and generally a larger closeup for pattern identification. My success of pattern identification from the photos is probably 95% (best we've seen). Reproductions are listed in the back, not as useful as being integrated into the "real" pattern pages but still very useful.If you are a collector, I would highly recommend purchasing this book before it goes out of print. The authors have retired. This is considered the "bible" of depression glass.

I have collected Depression Glass off and on for over 20 years. When I first began I purchased an early edition of Gene Florence's guide and found it very helpful. I have recently decided to sell some of my collection and bought this more recent version of Florence's guide to get a feel for current prices. I have enjoyed comparing the prices to those in tmyoriginal book. All of his guides are beautifully prepared with clear pictures and in depth descriptions of the patterns. There is a lot of information such as the years of manufacture and the company. I would recommend the guide to amyone, the new collector and the experienced.

This book on Depression Glass has more than served me well, it has saved me from purchasing fakes and reproductions. In addition, although prices vary frequently, the pricing guides by color and patterns have provided me with excellent "rule of thumb" for pricing on resale as well as purchase.Use this book in conjunction with Florence's "Glassware Pattern Identification Guide" to have a complete reference in identifying true depression glass vs. reproductions and fraud. If you collect on the road, have these books handy to help you make intellgent decisions for the correct patterns and prices.Florences "Glassware Pattern" book provides good pictures for identification but the 16th Edition "Depression Glass" Encyclopedia goes further, providing excellent detailed information on the manufacturers, patterns and discussion on what patterns were found to be reproduced later in different colors or using old molds. The descriptions also detail differences in similar patterns and how they vary slightly. This information helps the buyer from purchasing one pattern by mistake, especially when using the internet.In conjuction with both books I mentioned here, you will become further educated on Depression Glass, therefore, a more informed buyer.

As always, Florence has good information on collectible glass. New to this book are pictures with numbers so we can tell which piece is which, a very helpful addition. The pictures are very good with attention to detail on the patterns. His section on reproductions is also a very helpful portion, as there are many people out there who don't know how often this glass has been reproduced. I am sad that it's his last book, as I've had several of his editions on glassware.

I have been a depression glass collector for 40 years and these two books were gifts for a neighbor and her two granddaughters.

I love this book but wonder if Florence intentionally put a wrong patterned piece in with a well known pattern or if it was by accident. I wondered about it enough to want to email the question. Not able to get a valid email on Florence and the publisher. Makes me wonder about the accuracy of the other pictures, I also do not like the way the other "go-with" pieces for Jubilee were listed in the pricing, it is confusing, may make others think it is part of the pattern.

I read this cover to cover. The pricing information and items available in each pattern are invaluable information for collectors. I was disappointed that the patterns were not photographed well enough to distinguish one pattern from another if they were similar. For those who are just starting to collect or are trying to identify a particular pattern this would not be particularly helpful.

She was told that she was "God's Perfect Child" and that any errors she made, including being carsick every Sunday as she and her family traveled to her grandparents' house, were due to her "Mortal Mind." Although she left the church before she entered college, Fraser acknowledges that Christian Science is "profoundly complex" and "worth understanding in its own right." She sets out in this scintillating religious history to show the good, but especially the harm, that Christian Science has done. She opens with a brief biography of Mary Baker Eddy, the founder of Christian Science, whose Science and Health is studied reverentially by church members. She reveals Baker Eddy's fear of the material world and the ways in which she fashioned this fear into a religion that resists the advances of the scientific age. Fraser traces the development of Christian Science from a small sect to today's large political and religious organization that attracts numerous followers eager to embrace its messages of human perfectibility and self-reliance. The negative reviews of this book on here are disingenuous, unintelligent, and shrill.But they are typical. The Church and its members don't want to own up to how dangerous it is adhering to the strictest tenets of Christian Science. Of course, anyone who believes that diabetes, a broken bone, a terminal illness, or any other life-threatening illnesses can be done away with by wishing and praying need a serious reality check.My paternal grandmother was a Christian Science practitioner. She told me I could give a "demonstration" by curing myself of my congenital hearing defect.These are the issues behind the religion, its founder, and the Church, that Caroline Fraser has so scrupulously, relentlessly researched - and is the basis for this spellbinding book.Fraser's level of scholarship, reasoning, analysis, presentation, and cogent, stylish writing is, in a word, extraordinary.Her work here, without (naturally) the "cooperation" of the Church, is of an unbelievable breadth, reporting, and super-completeness. Every possible angle is investigated, elaborated upon, and made manifestly clear.You can almost discern Fraser's incredulous tone in places where the ignorance and shocking indifference directed toward those in need of medical care which results in horrific tragedy; not just dying, but of needless suffering due to withholding of medications. It is difficult to read some of the sheer stupidity of the actions of some of the "followers," and their heinous complacency and indifference to obviously ill and suffering people; your heart breaks for the many children in these pages who didn't have to die.Then there is the matter of money, and "mishandled" funds. Lawsuits. Infighting in the Church. All of it, appalling.The Church did in fact have a chance to redeem itself. The most revealing factor in this examination, of great interest, is that one of the Church's teachers, Arthur Corey, had the potential to modernize the extremist, fear-propagating tenets of Christian Science, but - no surprise - he was vilified and stymied by the powers that be running the institution.As Fraser writes: "But Corey also had an unerring sense of where the Christian Science movement had gone wrong. He identified the Church's gradual insistence after (Mary Baker) Eddy's death on "radical reliance" as a bad political mistake, forcing Scientists to take a hard line that made the religion unappealing to outsiders and critics. Corey is virtually the only Christian Scientist ever to acknowledge honestly and directly the dangers that the religion posed to children, publishing a description of children who had suffered and died as a result of overzealous reliance on Christian Science. ""The irony of Arthur Corey's life and career as an outcast Christian Scientist lies in the fact that he represented, on many levels, the best qualities of his religion. He embodied the kindness, compassion, and temperateness of the moderate Scientist, the Scientist who chooses not to force his beliefs on others or push his patients and students beyond what they can stand. He acknowledged, as no Christian Scientist publicly has before or since, the mental anguish that is caused by not knowing the potential severity of any given illness: "I have seen more than one patient relieved of unbearable terror by a medical diagnosis which revealed that a particular disorder was benign or malignant," he wrote. "It is nonsense to think the doctors produce the disease." His teachings stripped the religion of its darkest impulses toward paranoia and extremism. He stood for what Christian Science might have been at its best: a devotion to exploring the meaning of life, health and true morality. Arthur Corey died in 1977, dismissed by the Church but, nonetheless, a popular and enthusiastic Christian Science teacher to the end." (end quote)I have known many Christian Scientists who visit their doctors regularly and get the proper medical intervention as needed. The religion, for them, is greatly helpful in giving them inner strength to cope with life. My fear, though, is that innocent people, especially children, will continue to be the institution's casualties.Until now, I had never understood why my grandmother functioned the way she did; she alienated practically everyone in her midst by being a fanatic of CS, and caused much ill-will and bad tidings. She only became human and real when she wasn't under CS's dictum. I only wonder what she would have been like had she not been so *fanatical,* so unyielding.This peerless, supremely presented study of Fraser's can hardly be bettered - and may stand as the definitive history and examination of Christian Science.

This book is so good! I've read most of the books for ex-Scientists and have found this to be the best. It is objective and very well written. I especially enjoyed the history of the church and the biographical section about Mrs. Eddy. While a Scientist I was never able to get through her authorized biographies because I just couldn't believe them. This one feels real to me. The church has revised its way of dealing with children, (My state COP rep is telling the Scientists in my area that she only will treat a child for 24 hours, after that she tells the parents to take them to a doctor), but there is still lots of pressure on adults to stay the course even if CS isn't helping them. This is a very interesting read and I highly recommend it.

If you're wanting a secular, well-written and well-researched read of Mary Baker Eddy and Christian Science this is an excellent read.

I feel that this book succeeds almost perfectly in accomplishing its goal. It has a point of view which is clearly stated and is most brilliant in making accessible to the non-CS reader some of the historical and contemporary issues in the faith. I thought Fraser was very even handed in her sympathies to those reformers who have tried to heal the church. I did not come away with a negative opinion of CS but I do now have a better understanding of the faith as a whole. Fraser's book is a wake up call;I think the church could show a great deal of maturity by taking this critique and using it to constructively go forward. The CS church near where I live is sparsely attended and the membership is very old. It will not be long until it is silent. A great, thought provoking book!

Great read for ex-Christian Scientists. Very well-researched and informative.

After reading this book, I had to contact Caroline Fraser and tell her how spot on her book was!!! I was also raised as a Christian Scientist, from a mixed marriage ( a term I had never heard before) with my mom a Strict True Believer and my dad not). Although it seemed that Caroline's experience was more extreme than mine, both me and my brother "saw through these beliefs" by Jr High. We realized that "praying away" broken or sprained ankles, fingers, torn ligaments, was NOT going to work. (we both played at high level of sports). Also, mumps, measles and flu did NOT get better by praying or pretending they did not exist. When I went to a doctor (on my own) with a 103 temperature because of tonsillitis in High School and one shot of an antibiotic cured it over night, both me and my brother quite the religion right there!!!. My mom eventually contracted very bad arthritis, and after years of praying, even she turned to help from modern medicine. My brother died in 1986 from Hereditary Hemocromotosis, which I found out I had. If I had stayed with CS, I would NOT be writing this at a healthy age of 63.Having been brought up as a Christian Scientist, I did find her information on the inner workings of the church and the power struggle very interesting. It is well worth reading. Christian Science is NOT a "cult" and I do find some very good things in it's teachings, but I and thankful I did not raise my children in that religion.ps. I still have my mom's "Science and Health" and do read it once in a while.John M. Wedeward

It really was a warm, family book that reminds me of our Thanksgivings. My girls (5 & 3) really liked it, too.

A bit awkward in line length / syllables at times but otherwise decently written. I just wish the emphasis was not so heavily placed on the food and, rather, about the spirit of being grateful and appreciative and selfless. There is some emphasis on family and the big feast but the story could have been much more dedicated to the principle of giving thanks. It was an ok story and probably pretty true to the typical American home life on Thanksgiving Day but I would have loved a more fully encompassing message. All the same, we’re reading this book— and another children’s book called Thankful— as bedtime stories for our 4 yr old this November.

I like the idea of a Thanksgiving book, but I did not like the execution in this particular book. First, the pages are very thin - make sure you do not give it to a kid who enjoys folding pages as this book will get destroyed easily. Second, the story is actually quite long. My child lost interest in the book long before it was over. Third, this book is about what happens during Thanksgiving day to one particular family: someone trips and the turkey goes flying, Uncle Norm gets caught in a storm, the cousins play outside before the meal, the children put olives on their fingers while their mom is in the kitchen... This is more specific (less generic) than I expected. This book will not become a family favorite in our household.

My daughter (almost 5 now) and I love these books! They are not too long, not too short, and super fun! We have almost all of them, she loves to read them all the time especially the 'Night Before' whatever holiday or event the book is about. We started originally with the Night Before Preschool The Night Before Preschool August (2016) to help ease her into preschool a bit, we bought 10 other titles from this series since then and plan to expand the collection as time goes on.

Written in the same format as "A NIGHT BEFORE CHRISTMAS>" Has a nice cadence about it and very cleverly written. This is the type book that you could read to your kids every Thanksgiving and then pass it on to your grand children. You can make wonderful memories and in time you will always be remembered fondly on Thanksgiving eve.

Written in "Night Before Christmas" style, Natasha Wing has brought all the excitement, hustle-bustle, and fun to life in the pages of this story. Food being prepared, families arriving, children playing and a dramatic ending will keep children listening to the end. Excellent to read to those ages 6 and under

So clever and cute! Not a lot of books about Thanksgiving and this was darling! My kids new favorite book to read in november!

I am always a little leary of buying books that I haven't seen or heard about before but I decided to take a chance on this. After all, how many great Thanksgiving stories are there? Plus I got it for 3 or 4 dollars so I didn't have much to lose. I liked that it followed the Night before Christmas which made it fun to make the connection with the book and the song. The one complaint that I would offer is that, invariably, there are parts in books like these that have awkwardly worded sections trying to conform to the original's rhyming structure. Still, a good book for the young ones.

This is definitely one of our favorite holiday books! Really well written!
