From School Library Journal
Grade 4-6–Supported by a mix of cartoon vignettes, elaborately detailed illustrations of constellations, sky maps, and small but dramatic space photos, this tour of the universe takes readers through the solar system and well beyond–introducing along the way a handful of astronomers, space probes, myths, and principles of physics. Hamilton's informal scenes of dinosaurs watching a giant meteor coming down, stars cast as human figures with exploding heads, and such mirror Driscoll's general tone. Beneath such chapter heads as "Hunks, Chunks, and Flying Objects" or "The Zodiac Zoo," the author notes that "Stars and planets get most of the attention when we're talking about space. But there's lots of other cool stuff up there, too." The author defines special terms in a running "Deep Space Dictionary," and closes with an array of dates, calendars, and current paper or electronic resources. Because all of the information here is easily available elsewhere, and the sheet of glow-in-the-dark stickers and the adjustable star finder tucked into a pocket will be problems in a library setting, this genial, handsomely packaged survey makes an appealing, but secondary, choice.–John Peters, New York Public Library Copyright © Reed Business Information, a division of Reed Elsevier Inc. From the Inside Flap
Since ancient times, people have been looking up and wondering about all of the things that glow in the night sky, and about our place in the big, wide universe. The study of the night sky and all of the objects and forces up there is called astronomy, and A Child's Introduction to the Night Sky is a great introduction to what astronomers have learned (and are still discovering), what astronauts and scientists explore--and what you yourself can find by gazing up into the night sky. You'll learn about how stars are born; how the planets move through the sky; and just where we are within the big galaxy we call home; the Milky Way. You'll find out about solar and lunar eclipses, the phases of the Moon, and what a comet's tail is made of. You'll delve into mysterious forces (like black holes and dark matter) that are so strange that even scientists don't fully understand them yet. And when it comes time to find out about the starry constellations, you'll learn their names and shapes, along with their stories--sometimes called myths--that were invented to help explain and identify them. You'll even learn about rockets, satellites, space stations, and space travel, including some of the exciting plans we have for future missions. When will a person visit Mars? It might be sooner than you think! Finally, you will find out how to take the handy Star Finder outside with you and find all of your favorite stars, constellations and planets in the sky, just like professional astronomers do. (Wait until you find out how easy it is to spot Venus). With A Child's Introduction to the Night Sky, the Star Finder inside and the fun glow-in-the-dark stickers you can put on your ceiling, you will be a junior astronomer in no time!

Constellation is not so relevant these days because of such a high light pollution.(You need pretty dark sky for recognizing the constellations.)I like star finding based on bright stars (not constellation) and I think "Turn Left at Orion" is much more useful even for kids.Any way visual presentation is very friendly and good introduction.I give it 4 stars.
We were studying astronomy in our homeschool this year for first grade. I bought this book along with a telescope to take on a camping trip with us. We live in an area with a lot of light pollution so stars are few and far between most nights. This book is full of information and includes everything you'd ever want to address with a child including constellations, the space station, planets, and even some history of astronomy. Even without the use of the telescope, this book includes great pictures of the constellations, a star map, and things I would never have thought to teach without seeing it in this book. We didn't read the book straight through because it does contain a lot of information, instead turning to the page we wanted to learn about and reading just that instead, taking the book in small chunks. My son loved it and exploring all the wonderful illustrations on each page. I highly recommend this book if you have a child interested in astronomy.
I loved the fact that this book came with a star finder so a child could find certain stars. I also liked the glow in the dark stars for a child's room. I got this book along with The Space Encyclopedia by National Geographic and the 2 books together were beautiful and informative. How wonderful that such an informative book can entice children.
Beautifully illustrated, written in a fun and whimsical way. It doesn't read as dry non-fiction, but as a wonderful sky exploration. It covers a lot of information. It is not a book you would read in one reading, but simply choose a subject to go over with your kids. Let's look at the moon! They gobble up the infomation. There is a wonderful star-chart so you can easily find constellations on a dark evening. I wish that was more sturdy. Otherwise, this book is an essential in our library!
We bought this book as a companion to giving our daughter a Celestron Cosmos FirstScope for her 7th birthday. The book is great and both our 7 and 5 year old enjoy reading it (being read to) at night. In some respects, the material is presented more simply that the Cosmos TV series presented material, but at the same time, the book is extremely well written, very educational, and reads well. It has promoted a great discussion about the speed of light, with my children turning the lights on and off to see if they can see light move, and the other night when reading about planets and the solar system, to help illustrate the points being made in the book we all got off the couch and role played as the Sun, Earth, and Moon rotating around each other - it was a great time indeed! The book is beautifully done and the companion star chart and glow in the dark stickers an added bonus! Highly recommended for children who are interested in learning more about the heavens.
This was a gift for the family along with a telescope for Christmas. This book has beautiful illustrations along with informative text. This book teaches about the night sky, solar system, planets, and universe. The book comes with a star wheel and stickers. I am sure my kids will enjoy this book for many years to come. A great introduction to astronomy for kids. I am happy with the purchase, well worth the price paid.
A little complicated for smaller children but will be great as 5 year old grandson gets a bit older.
Both children and adults will enjoy this lovely book. It offers a fun and interesting introduction to many topics having to do with astronomy and familiarizes readers with some of the most influential historical figures in the field. Unlike many books that handle the astronomy, this one offers very approachable hands-on insight - an excellent way to spark interest in other topics like mathematics, physics, chemistry, ecology, and astrophysics. Illustrations are colorful and relevant, and the writing is clear and lively. I noticed a few errors, but overall find this to be an excellent book.
I bought 2 of these books for each family to go along with the two telescopes I bought from Nancy B's Science and the Educational Insigthts Geosafari Jr. Talking Telescope. The book is beautifully made with great pictures and quizzes as well as a hardbound special star gazer that comes out to take outside and find the different constellations depending on the day of the year.
