A note from the author on her approach in Stitchcraft: Although I do provide basic patterns at the back of this book, I don’t feel it is necessary to follow an embroidery pattern. To me, the beauty of embroidery is having the freedom to make design decisions as you work on a piece. Gayla Partridge is a Texas native with a Fine Arts degree from the University of Texas at Austin. Her initial creative focus was stained glass; however, in 2002, she began working in photography, launching a successful ten-year career creating high-concept fine art designing and photographing intensely detailed and complex handmade sets, costumes, and vignettes. Gayla’s brings the same eye for fine art and detail to embroidery, her newest creative passion.

Let me start by saying the photography and originality are wonderful. To me this is more of a coffee table book than a craft book. Only nine stitches are used in the book, none of which are illustrated. She basically tells you to "watch online videos, take classes or read how-to books" to learn how to do the stitches. There are patterns in the back of the book with no instructions of how to transfer the patterns to fabric. I feel the author was quite lazy as the instructions would have only required an additional few pages. Not a how-to book for sure.
This book is wonderful and the photos are to die for! (Insert better pun here, when I think of it)I am for sure a fan of more “dark†or “funky†craft projects and this book has so many good ideas.The skill level is a bit of a reach for me, as I am not a seasoned embroiderer. That said, the basic patterns and themes can be single or chained stitched and I believe they will also come out well, so don’t be intimidated to create images just like these. This is not a beginners book and does not include instructions on how to step by step create flowers or make a French knot. What this book does provide is inspiration and patterns to make embroidery projects that are more exciting, and daring, than your average run of the mill tea towel embroidery book.I’m happy about the purchase and I can’t wait to try these out!
I got this for a friend that is into embroidery. They liked it, and it seemed like a pretty high quality book in both material and content. I've never found embroidery very interesting, but the pieces in this book seemed pretty impressive. It consists of pictures of embroidery work and short descriptions of the process of making it and the different stitches used. The second half contains black outlines of the different pieces. It doesn't have much in terms of a detailed how-to for each piece, so don't expect that, but if you're already familiar with embroidery and just looking for ideas, as my friend was, this seems to be pretty good.
This book is way cooler than I knew it was going to be! The way the photos capture the detail of each piece is incredible and inspiring. I really get a feeling of patience and accomplishment from looking at Gayla's beautiful creations.
Absolutely beautiful book! My mother loves embroidery and I bought this as a housewarming gift - huge hit! The book is filled with absolutely fabulous art. Very thick and a lot of different styles of artwork inside.
I have the privilege of working with Gayla in her photography. Her sets, styling and attention to detail were amazing! This book is no different, just a different medium to create her beautiful art. Can't wait to try one of her patterns!
