It has been over 15 years since the publication of The Odds: One Season, Three Gamblers, and the Death of Their Las Vegas, Chad Millman’s insightful look at the world of sports bettors. At the beginning of the 21st century, the industry was undergoing a period of radical transformation. Offshore books were taking business away from the Nevada casinos. But the Nevada desert was still a powerful allure for men (and a few women) with fool-proof systems and a yearning to live like a wise guy. Millman portrays the Las Vegas gambling lives of three man in great detail.Alan Boston, genuine wise guy, will bet any amount ($2,000 to $20,000) on any game, using a system that only he understands. Rodney Bosnich, wise guy in training, a recent arrival from small-town Indiana, has a smaller bankroll but no less ambition that the established Vegas bettors. Joe Lupo, sports book manager, tolerates the squares, the nickel and dimers, the convention goers who flock to the Stardust to spend $22 to win $20. On the other hand, Joe Lupo despises the wise guys. Wise guys take up space in his head every waking moment of every day as he carefully crafts each Opening Line of every game. Before we go any further, it needs to be mentioned that I have bet on college basketball games. I’ve never been to Las Vegas and never patronized the ubiquitous neighborhood bookie. I had no need for an envelope stuffed with fifties in my side pocket or a clandestine account at Vince’s Butcher Shop; my transactions were done with mouse clicks.I only bring this up because I’m pretty sure Millman his own-self has wagered a few pesos on the outcomes of young men’s games. His observations about gamblers’ delusional thought processes and descriptions of game-day heart palpitations and mood swings are spot on. Only a man who has watched a walk-on hit a three-pointer with :02 on the clock, moving the final margin from 19 to 22, can give us – “On November 30, like a drunk reaching for the whiskey, he decides he can’t hold back anymore. Alan put low five figures on New Orleans plus-9.5 against Southern Mississippi and the same amount on then sixteenth-ranked Illinois, who were 2.5-point underdogs against seventeenth-ranked Duke.”Or this – “The pattern was the same every time. The game looks good so he gets some money down early. Then it moves his direction and he puts a little more down. By game time he’s acting like a full-blown addict, binging on the line in massive doses, unable to hold back from tossing around obscene amounts of money.”The Odds is not a sermon and Millman is not a preacher. Readers looking for a moral tome on the evils of the gambling life will need to look elsewhere.

This book inspired me to make personal changes in my life. After reading the book my senior year of college, I submitted an application to the Las Vegas Sports Consultants (LVSC) and attained a summer internship with the group. I referenced this book in my interview, and that my interest in LVSC was driven by Chad's portrayal of the firm. It was a fantastic experience that I will never forget.Needless to say, I am slightly biased when it comes to reviewing this book. I typically take something from all books, but this book obviously delivered more than I expected (A JOB!). Here is my best objective summary of the book. The greatest strength of this book is the development of the many characters in the book. I say the word "character" because these are definitly not your average Joe. My personal favorite is Alan Boston. Alan is a lovable curmudgeon that means well, but often shoots himself in the foot. I pleasantly laughed out loud at some of the remarks he made while watching games (primarily because I have made the same comments myself). If I would change the book in any way, I would strike the section on legislation and legalization of sports wagering. Although it is relevant to the story, I felt like it dragged on at times, and took away from the excitement of the "action." Also, like most things concerning the law, a lot has changes amongst the wagering landscape since this book was release (Draftkings, Fanduel, etc.).The writing is strong, and not without moments of "tongue-in-cheek" humor. Chad is an interesting guy himself, who I have corresponding with since reading the book. He is a very friendly person who cares deeply about his audience.Buy this book, and if you dont enjoy it, find a degenerate gambler to give it to. He or she will be sure to find a special place in their heart for it.

Gambling can completely take over someones life and few there are that can actually be successful at it. Chad Millman follows three gamblers as they go through high and lows and have some success and a lot more failure. Sad to see how gambling is so addictive and can ruin lives if needed. Gambling has changed a lot over the years, but this book shows how a lot of money can still be won on gambling with sports although the lines are often set by machines now instead of humans. An interesting read.

I read the book in two sittings and enjoyed it throughly. The characters were fleshed out nicely and you could actually feel yourself rooting for them in some instances knowing all the while that a "normal" person would never have the guts to lay down the bets that they have made. Contempt and jealously were common emotions I felt as I read them, and as I am planning a trip to Las Vegas in the next few weeks I will be toting the book looking for autographs. This is truly a very good read and if you have interest in sports betting and Las Vegas I can't see how you could go wrong in purchasing this.

I enjoyed this book. It takes the reader on the roller coaster ride of betting on college basketball in Las Vegas. Although there were far too many typographical and grammatical problems, the story is engaging. If you ever wondered how the sports books set the lines or what the lifestyle of the full-time "professional" sports bettor is, this book is illuminating. Interestingly, Millman predicts the imminent demise of the Vegas sports book 14 years ago, but today the business seems to be as strong as ever. A fun read.

I know he is self-deprecating, but Chad Millman is both personable and very sharp. This book is worth the read for any sports gambler. Even better are the Maine ties with Alan Boston! And Scucci rose to stardom as a result of this book - the Scuch-pod would not be nearly as popular without our introduction to him in The Odds.

From School Library Journal

PreS-Gr 2-Light on plot but heavy on humor, this offering is a series of predicaments strung together to make a story. Various animals, from "Delia the dragon" who "sneezed and burned herself" to "Danny the dalmatian" who "broke out into stripes," get hurt in different, outlandish ways but go to the doctor and get better. The humor is made broader and sillier through the illustrations. Delia is pouting and forlorn, with a red-and-white striped polo shirt burned and smoking on the bottom, as her singed wings droop. Even the edges of the grass are scorched. "Katie the cat," who tries to "chase a mouse through a mouse hole" (while wearing roller skates), emerges with a squared-off body, pulled whiskers, and bandaged nose. Young listeners are sure to giggle at the inventive plights these creatures experience. The book should even make some scraped knees feel better.-Jane Marino, Scarsdale Public Library, NYCopyright 2001 Cahners Business Information, Inc.

From Booklist

Ages 3-6. Little kids sick in bed will be cheered by this sprightly, silly picture book that shows lots of different ways that things can go wrong, starting with "Poor Cynthia centipede. She sprained 98 ankles playing field hockey." There's also Danny the Dalmatian, who breaks out in stripes, and Delia the dragon, who sneezes and burns herself. Each of the unfortunate animals appears in an imaginatively designed two-page spread, with the details of the pictures going for ultimate laughs. For instance, Cynthia is stretched across two pages, supported by a stool holding up her middle. Each one of her tiny legs is wrapped in a bandage. The watercolor art is reproduced brightly, so all the fun pops out. The book's concluding message about getting well will reassure children who are ill, but even kids who are as healthy as a horse will enjoy this. Ilene CooperCopyright © American Library Association. Cute book. The story is very simple though our children enjoyed it.

This is a cute little book aimed at the youngest of readers, featuring fun, vibrant, color illustrations with short captions. The message of the book is that doctors make everything better when you get hurt or sick. I know how much I hated going to the doctor when I was a little, and I know it would have taken more than a cute book to make me less anxious about heading off to the clinic without a fight, but The Get Well Soon Book by Kes Gray and Mary McQuillan might have made me feel a little better about my situation. These pages are filled with different animals who have suffered injuries of some sort or another - a mole who burrowed right into a brick wall, a dragon who burned herself with a sneeze, a turtle who got stepped on by an elephant, a hamster who got his whiskers caught in his wheel, etc. None of them look very happy, which is perfectly understandable. After a trip to the doctor, though, they're all frolicking around in no time, their pain or sickness gone and forgotten. The Get Well Soon Book is a short book, but any child should get a kick out of the wonderful illustrations - and it just might help a sick or injured child feel a little better for awhile.

Kumai is known for creating inspiring, mindful food content. I first learned of her work through the book Pretty Delicious, which focused on FWB's: Food With Benefits. The object was not deprivation, but modification. Make sure to focus on the healthier parts of food (the greens, mostly), then allow space for living and enjoyment! The other cookbooks focused, again, on well-thy foods to encourage feeling good and looking good (Cook Yourself Sexy, Clean Green Drinks, Clean Green Eats). This book takes a different turn, and Kumai is going to get a huge return on her investment. She took a series of trips to Japan to speak with family and experts on Japanese philosophy. While she got to tap into her roots, and repair from her own grief and loss, we yield the benefits of her gained wisdom (all without the high ticket price and jet lag). Oh, and you still get great recipes (matcha scones are going to happen this weekend!).Kintsugi is about repair. We've all felt broken at one point or another, but I think we need to think beyond the self-care of bubble baths and face masks. Being broken isn't easy- it's tears shed, drinking too much, and losing who you are. We all have a story like Kumai's, but we have to do the hard work to fill in the cracks of our broken shell (and fill them with gold, honey!). In this book she shares her framework, but we have to be the ones to apply it, in whatever way suits you and your upbringing, spiritual beliefs, etc.Other books by Candice:Clean Green Eats: 100+ Clean-Eating Recipes to Improve Your Whole LifeClean Green Drinks: 100+ Cleansing Recipes to Renew & Restore Your Body and MindPretty Delicious: Lean and Lovely Recipes for a Healthy, Happy New You (the BEST spinach artichoke dip recipe is in this book!)Cook Yourself Sexy: Easy Delicious Recipes for the Hottest, Most Confident You

I have been looking forward to this book to be released for a while...so much so that the night I received it, I sat down and read it cover to cover!Last year, as my Mom and I were on a trip together and we took a walk through a forest. We were so happy and relaxed, and she said "Did you know that the Japanese have a word that literally means forest bathing?". As interesting as I learning that was, I can't say I was that surprised. Although my knowledge of Japan and its people was pretty minimal, I knew that the Japanese seemed to view life differently than what I am used to be surrounded by in the US. There is an aura of peace, well-being, and optimism around them, even though they have endured a lot throughout history. I wanted to learn more.Almost immediately after returning from my trip, Candice announced she was releasing a book about Japanese wellness, and I knew I had to get it.And it did not disappoint. Part of it is a story - her own and her family's - mixed in with Japanese wellness tips & ideologies, approachable recipes, and Japan travel pointers. This is a book that I feel would be beneficial for everyone to read, and I know I will find myself referring back to it time and time again.Embrace the struggle & take care of yourself and others. Thank you, Candice, for this beautiful book!!

I am a nutritionist in NY (Alex). I read Candice's book one night! I was so excited to receive it when I got home. The book is beautiful inside and out. Candice's passion and love for her family, upbringing and country of her roots is so evident in the pages of this book. I will certainly need to re-read and place lots of stickies in the margins to come back to lessons I will need to remind myself of again and again. This is a true wellness book- yes it involves food/beautiful recipes (cannot wait to make matcha chocolate cookies and pancakes!), but it is more about how to be spiritually well, love yourself, find the beauty in other humans, and let go of what does not serve you. I am traveling to Japan soon and cannot wait to see it with more presence than I might have before- inspired by Candice. Could feel all the love that went into this book and it was so well written. Highly recommend!

After living in Japan for two years (and missing it greatly) and struggling to keep a calm, clear head at times, this book was soooooo refreshing to read! Having experienced the culture and then thinking about the simple phrases I'd hear on a daily basis and how it relates to general well-being was an association I hadn't truly made on my own. Now these terms/sayings take on a different, more meaningful and applicable context for me.

I love this book. Well designed, informative, and recipes (lots)! Broken down into wellness sections that make loads of sense. A must have for anyone longing for down to earth life balancing advice via Japanese traditions. You will not be sorry in this investment.

This book is amazing! It is so inspirational and everyone will be able to relate with the deep meaning. Has awesome recipes and I love how Candice expanded in this book more than just being a cookbook, this one is a lifestyle/self help book and so much more! So beautiful!

I discovered Candice Kumai and all of her amazingness just in the last year. Instantly became a fan of hers on instagram, & I feel like we are friends (she does that to you!) I learned more and more about her and this book she was putting her heart & soul into, so I added it to my list right away. Not only is this book gorgeous on the outside, but it is full of SO much more on the inside. I'm only on chapter 2, the chapter on wabi sabi, and I feel like she is speaking directly to me. You guys, there is serious treasure in here! I can't wait to get to the rest of the book & turn back to it over & over again. *The recipes make me want to stay in on a Friday night & bake chocolate chip matcha cookies! Do not buy the kindle version from X-ist Classics. It's an un-edited scan. You get great gems like "It is said that what is called "the spirit of an ape' ' is seine- thing to which one cannot return."

Formatting and spelling errors abound in the Kindle version. I have a paperback copy that is error free, this ebook version would make and English teacher cry.1 star for Kindle version, 5 for the hardcopy

Didn't realize before I ordered that it was a small pocket version. Maybe I missed it in the descriptions but its weird that a book like this is sold in the mini form, Personal issue more than the companies issue.

The author of this book had great wisdom to pass along with some interesting stories of his time. I have quoted him lately as I feel many things he said in the late 1600's into the early 1700's apply today as well as when first written. It can be viewed also as a guide to making oneself into a better person too. The remarks of pride and personal appearance combined with the strong sense of duty are a good role model. His references to changing times and the foolishness of youth are well expressed and they too apply to today's world all to well.Though there were a few words that were badly misspelled and somewhat confusing at first ( ie. "pot" in place of "got" "gut" for "cut") it was still easy to follow once you got past the misspelled words and worked out their true meaning. However, the content of the book was what I sought. I have read it in a matter of a couple of weeks, though it could be read in a day without interruption. But to read it quickly would be unwise. You'd miss much of what is really being said. I will read this book again in a month's time and try to absorb more of it's wisdom from the a true mast of his age.

This is a book of reflections on life written by a rather unremarkable samurai just after Japan entered into an era of peace under the Tokugawa shogunate. This made the warrior class into a class of armed civil servants - not an easy transition, begging the question what to do with the two very sharp objects tucked into their belts every waking moment of their lives. The interesting thing about this book is that as someone who has been doing business in Japan for over 15 years, I wish I had read it much earlier. That is because the current Japanese business mentality is very much a product of the two and a half centuries in which the country was run by a class of people who were armed to the teeth and had to follow bushido as a way of life, but in reality had desk jobs and administered things like rice production. Some parts of the book will sound exceedingly misogynistic and weird to our ears, but those are the parts you should pay attention to if you deal with the Japanese. Others are rather entertaining, and yet other are off the wall.In summary, if you are interested in an unfiltered glimpse into the mind of a samurai turned clerk and in getting some insight into the way the Japanese view the world to this day, Hagakure is definitely worth your time!

Full of useful anecdotes and life advice for people interested in strengthening their resolve, looking for direction, or (surprisingly) confidence building. Also some good etiquette lessons but I’d recommend against cutting someone down with your short sword if they’ve offended you.

Review: HagakureYamamoto TsunetomoBushido: The Way of the Warrior is the Way of DeathI could see this book becoming easily misunderstood. It brims with warrior energy--especially beneficial for someone going through a particularly low or troubling period of their life where they need some motivation and can vicariously appreciate the struggles of others. The simple message of the book is this: in order to master yourself you need to kill your self. What does that mean? It doesn't mean suicide. Far from it--in fact it is the opposite: it is a birth or a rebirthing. What we are killing is that part of ourselves which confuses our values, which puts us in tension with ourselves: the ego. In the words of Guru Prem, Tsunetomo is asking that the EGO become an AMIGO. It is TAMING THE WILD HORSE--and, subsequently, breaking her.The style is aphoristic. That means its EASY to digest and SIMPLE to navigate. You an really pick it up anywhere and read it from that point. It is not a linear and progressing narrative. You could read it completely out of order. This is great because Tsunetomo gets right to the point.Check my blog post about it for a full detail of the points the book makes:[...]

I really enjoy this book! But just a few things to keep in mind. It is translated to English, so that can always bring out the possibility of different interpretations from the original text. That being said, the translator for this version is very well educated in Japanese, and did a great job with this book. Also note, as stated in the front of the book, this is not the entire Hagajure, but I am not even sure if there is any full version, at least as far as English translations go. But this has many many quotes and readings for you to enjoy. If you read the entire thing in one day, you are not reading it correctly or as intended. With these types of books it is wise to read a passage, and sit there and think on what you just read. What it truly means. All in all, this is a great book, especially for the price! Enjoy!

I bought the calendar for my roommate, so I saw the packaging when it arrived. It was fabulous. The seller had all of these beautiful old stamps affixed to the envelope. We were all so mesmerized by the packaging that we forgot that we had a 1975 calendar in our hands. I would buy from this seller, again, and would recommend them to others. (Oh, and the calendar was awesome, too, including a date where someone had written Led Zepplin!!! on it....a blast from the past).
