This is much more than a recipe book. David Wondrich goes unwinds the intricate history of classic American cocktails and provides stories and detailed mixological notes along with the 100+ definitive recipes for classic drinks. He covers all the bases: Punches, cocktails, sours, fizzes, toddies, and slings.

As a fan of spirits and the new movement back to traditional cocktails and bar scenes, Imbibe! provides a wonderful overview of the craft of drinking and context into the origin of many time-honored recipes and other magic elixirs. Of course the best part is the variety of old school recipes – many I have mixed at home or had the pleasure of sampling from expert mixologists. Like good wine, a well-crafted cocktail has just as much complexity, beauty, and history. This book is a treat for people looking to broaden their knowledge of classic American drinking culture.

I am surprised at how effective Wondrich's passions are transferred to the readers of IMBIBE. I am simply obsessed with this little book. I wish it were three times as long. I ran out immediately and bought Bols Genver (Gin originally manufactured in 1820 and recently re-introduced (in 2008) due to this book I am certain) and Laird's Apple Brandy and I am regularly filling my friends with concoctions from the mid-19th century and they're loving it. Tom and Jerry (that seasonal (and quite lovely) egg nog on steroids) is a particular favourite. Wondrich has a seductive, learned, sly, and wonderfully trenchant writing style. The man is a bloody wonder. Where have you been all my life?

There's just not enough known about Jerry Thomas to sustain a full book - he's only about a quarter of this one. Which is fine, because Wondrich has made the drinks the real subject of the book, and goes into satisfying detail on each one and how they've evolved for the better or the worse.If nothing else, like Vintage Cocktails will teach you that refrigerated non-oxidized vermouth actually tastes good (unlike a big bottle of martini & rossi left to oxidize), this will teach you the pleasures of freshly grated nutmeg and the real pros and cons of shaking vs stirring.This book convinced me to buy a about $100 worth of equipment, including a real ice crusher - I think it might light a fire in you too.

David Wondrich has a new fan! I started with this book and quickly took to his magazine of the same name -- Imbibe! In this book, he provides a wonderful snapshot of cocktailing, as it has grown in America over the past three centuries. The focus on Jerry Thomas is well-justified, but he goes further into the lore by detailing the undocumented eras that preceded the legendary Thomas. With smart provisions for bar essentials and methods that are key to being a well-rounded bartender, and a fantastic chapter on the Sporting culture of that bygone era, Wondrich invokes a sense of pride in a lost profession. His attention to detail and mission to maintain the originality of the recipes provides a great foundation for those looking to wax intellectual about the culture, from behind the bar or in front of it. Know thy bartender.

The cocktail has had a glorious 200 year history, much of which unfortunately has gone unheralded for far too long. Thankfully, one of the most diligent cocktail historians of today's milieu has taken it upon himself to rectify this problem.Using the illustrious "Jerry Thomas" (famous bartender from the mid 1800's and author of the first known bartenders guide) as a focal point, Mr. Wondrich introduces us to the birth and evolution of the cocktail as well as a variety of other categories of "mixed drinks" from that era. With insightful, and often witty explanations he steps carefully through both the drinks and the attitudes of the time which formed the foundation for all that was to follow.Cocktail recipe books, which cram as many recipes as possible within their pages, are a dime a dozen. To truly understand the cocktail, whether you are a bartender or bar-attender, requires that you have a grasp of the history which preceded our current landscape. For this reason, this book is perhaps the most important book of its kind, and fills a huge void which has surrounded this topic for virtually its entire history.

Full disclosure - I received an advance copy of this book and the supplementary content in exchange for participating in a survey to help the author select a cover for his book. I don't know him personally, so I really didn't know what to expect when I was notified the book was available. After reading through the full book and watching all the videos that go along with it, I can honestly say this is a very good resource for anyone starting out with using WordPress as a platform for blogging. I'm only a year into using a self-hosted WordPress site for my own blog, and this book covers most of the pain points I encountered during the course of that year. In many cases, the solutions provided are better than what I uncovered on my own and I'll be updating my site accordingly.ProsThe video content is the real gem, covering nearly every aspect of working with WordPress from installation through configuration as well as important topics like search engine optimization. I've not seen all this information in one place prior to this book and the related video content. The author is very articulate and thorough, and does an excellent job of walking the viewer through each step covered.ConsThere are some topics that would be beneficial for a beginner to know about that aren't mentioned at all, such as creating child themes that allow customizations to persist even after your main theme gets an update, and WordPress managed hosting plans that take care of WordPress-related maintenance like updates, caching, and backups for you. I wish I had known about child themes when I first started, it would have saved me a lot of trouble in terms of theme updates wiping out my customizations. A managed hosting plan will cost a little more but I consider the time it saves me to focus on content creation to be worthwhile.**Edit** I was wrong about child themes. Although not covered in the book, manual creation of a child theme *is* covered in the supplementary video content. However, I would suggest beginners take a look at one of the many automatic child theme creation plug-ins available rather than creating one manually. For example, I've used Child Theme Configurator and it worked extremely well for this purpose.Bottom lineThis is a very good resource for anyone looking to get started with WordPress, just be aware that it is not a completely comprehensive solution - you'll still want to do a bit of research on your own to make sure you have all your bases covered.

I’m in the middle of this book and can’t recommend it. I’m a beginner in some ways and not in others. What I mean is that I already have a site, domain name, host etc., and really needed more help to help me maximize how my site is set up, in a functional, safe and attractive manner. I needed helped in a detailed way about how to customize my theme. If the book is for beginners, then the author should have realized that the language used in Wordpress is its own language. There should be a glossary describing what a category is, a tag, a slug etc., He talks about these things like a new user really knows what they are and what they do. I’m very frustrated and can’t even get to the videos. At first the site was unavailable and now it says that the certificate of the site is not trusted. I’m giving it two stars because it’s helping me a bit but I’m not happy. There are typos as well. This is sloppy work.

Good walkthrough, more than an introduction. Even links you to well done videos illustrating the material. But assumes you have a paid plan. Does not match the WordPress free plan's features so well. The Dashboard is very important for designing a site, but I have trouble finding it with the free plan. I do have a separate link to my site that gets to it, but not sure were I got it? Somewhat different. You can do basic stuff without it, but seems easier and more stuff with it. I'm still new.Valuable feature is book's recommendations for hosting sites besides Wordpress's free site and for plugins besides Wordpress defaults in Jetpack. The other sites have a cost, but their Dashboard, for one thing, is better in my young experience. Get what you pay for? Of course, Wordpress has an upgrade to paid features as well.Book is probably a 5 star introduction if you are new and opting for the fuller features of paid plans.

Great book for anyone looking to build their first Wordpress website. A few other reviews critique that there could have been additional info on certain aspects, but I think that might be have been overkill. It's possible to write a 1000 page in depth guide on WP, but this guide covers most of the issues I had when I was setting up my website. Wordpress is great but it's got a bit of a learning curve, and isn't super intuitive. In the beginning, I had difficulty finding certain pages within the WP dashboard, and I spent a lot of time simply going from page to page trying to find the one setting I was trying to change. This book breaks this steps down and shows you exactly where everything is located. Really helps with the maze-like layout of wordpress. Definitely recommended. Would have saved me a lot of time a couple of years ago.

I think for someone just entering the world of wordpress and marketing, this is a great book. The digital content really brings it together. I can say this with a fair bit of confidence because I've been building technology for more than 15 years. I expected to have all the skills the book would teach, and I read it because I like to keep abreast of training material and to look at how someone organizes a 'curriculum.' It can be felt in the love the author, Jonathan Drori, has for his subject and, for those who share his affection for trees, a special kind of special between the reader and fruits of Drori's droll writing.Spread out over 227 beautifully illustrated pages, Drori gives a brief historic and biological overview of each tree -- enough to pique curiosity and interest, but not enough to either incite boredom for those only casually interested in the subject, or provide in-depth detail for those looking for a deeper understanding of dendrology. For the latter, Drori helpfully provides a "Where to go next" reference section at the end, which I found to be an unexpected surprise.A quick comment on style. Anyone familiar with British comedy will recognize that culture's distinctly bemused tone in Drori's writing. From American authors this tone often comes across as forced, but from the delightfully British Drori it adds an element of levity and readability to a subject that might otherwise feel wooden, pun intended.Around The World in 80 Trees is definitely a niche book, and as such I suspect it will have a limited audience. But if you fall within that audience, it is a rare discovery and a uniquely satisfying treat -- a special kind of special.

From reading about it on the suthor’s linkedin site to getting the book so soon after publishing, I was thrilled to see it, read it and review it. It’s unlike any other tree book out there-you’ll love the quirky stories about each tree the author chose. The book arrived appropriately packaged and as quickly as promised. Thank you!

When reading this book and you reach page 144, pages 131-144 repeat, and pages 145-160 are missing. So when you pay for a book entitled "Around the World in 80 Trees" you really are only getting a book about 75 trees. Sadly, from prior experience, the entire edition is usually effected. I can't blame the author, and what is there has great illustrations, but I'm completely unimpressed with Laurence King Publishing. This isn't a cheap paperback either.

This is a really great book. I learned a lot, and I remembered a lot from my childhood. It would make a great gift.

Gave this as a Christmas gift to a friend who loves trees, like I do. He is very pleased with it. He said it’s a beautiful book and the drawings are well done.

This is a fascinating book. I gave it to a granddaughter studying horticulture and nursery management and she was absolutely delighted with it.

I bought this book as a gift for my tree-loving (and hugging) wife. She loved it as first browse-through. I'm quite sure she'll really enjoy it.

This book was very well written, beautifully illustrated, and full of new information. The selection of trees from around the world included many I knew, but more that I didn't, so that gave me lots of new knowledge. Will read it again before too long. Well worth having on the shelf. Oh, and a well-produced hard back. A delight to hold!!

Using melt and pour soap is a great way to create your own specialize soaps adding oatmeal and herbal elements you could come up with some very unique soaps I recommend this product to anyone

I have only been making soap for 4 months and had no problems with the recipes in this book.I was surprised at how easy it was to make my own melt and pour soap. I have made three of the recipes so far and each one turned out perfect. Of course I read the book cover to cover and I read the instructions several times before I started. No pictures needed. All you need is a brain that can follow the simple step by step directions directions, the ability to use a scale properly, and the ability to read the labels on your ingredients. I have made cold process, hot process, and liquid soap this was a breeze! I think it is wonderful to be able to add this to my repertoire. One of the best "how to make soap" books I have purchased. I have no idea which book Chris Redwood (the person who gave it one star) was reading but, it certainly was not this book. Worth every penny!

It gave me a greater appreciation for the work that goes into making my soap base and discouraged me from making my own. It is thorough and explains the process well, but I currently use too little base for my small handmade batches to make an additional investment in equipment and large quantities of ingredients. This may not seen a re positive review, but I am grateful. If you like to cook soap from scratch it would be a great guide. If, like me, you are uncertain, order a copy from the library. It explains it well.
