VITA SACKVILLE-WEST was born in 1892 in Kent. A distinguished critic, biographer, award-winning poet and gardener, she also published twelve novels, including All Passion Spent and The Edwardians. Her relationship with Virginia Woolf is celebrated in Woolf's novel Orlando, and the story of her life with Harold Nicolson, one of the strangest and happiest love stories, was portrayed in Portrait of a Marriage by their son Nigel Nicolson. She died at Sissinghurst, aged seventy, in 1962.SARAH RAVEN, writer, cook, broadcaster and teacher, runs cooking, flower arranging, growing and gardening courses at the school she set up in 1999 at her farm in East Sussex. She has written three cookbooks, as well as Wild Flowers and four gardening books, including The Cutting Garden. Sarah Raven is married to the writer Adam Nicolson and they have lived with their family at Sissinghurst.

I've always been a huge fan of logic puzzles. I'm so happy I found this book series of logic puzzles. I'm only on the 17th puzzle in this book and so far they all seem to be fairly easy. Hopefully that'll change as I get further into the book.One thing I will say is that I bought this book thinking the puzzles would all have a holiday theme but no. They have song lyrics at the bottom of some pages so I guess that's why it's a 'Christmas' book.

Love these logic puzzles!

These puzzles are incredibly easy so it's a good book for a beginner. I was looking for something with more difficulty so was a little disappointed.

Intended as a commentary on the Icelandic language rather than a tutorial. Since my Navy days I have been trying, although not diligently, to learn the rules of the language. It appears that maybe the task is doomed as there seems to be no predictable rules.Consider the peculiarities of English -- the plural of "dog" is "dogs", but the plural of "sheep" is still "sheep". Why is that? I have no idea. Maybe some deep cultural wisdom is contained in it.Anyway, Icelandic has quite a lot of that sort of thing where making a word plural changes it, but so does the reason you are saying the word. If you merely name a place it gets one spelling and sounding; but if you are going there it gets a different spelling and sounding, and so on. The complexity is fascinating.I was pleased to confirm an observation I had made while there; Icelandic can unambiguously answer a negatively phrased question. Do you want to see a movie? Ja (yes). Don't you want to see a movie? (Do you NOT want to see a movie?) Ju (yes; negates the negative and affirms the object).My interest is in human nature; an ancient language carefully preserved has such things as negatively phrased questions but also a way to answer such things unambiguously.Throughout the book Alda Sigmundsottir maintains a delightful and lighthearted sense of humor.

Most importantly, realize that this is not a book intended to teach you Icelandic words and phrases. It is an examination of the linguistics of the Icelandic language. This looks at how Icelandic history, environment, and culture is reflected in their language and idioms. That said, this book is a wonderful source for getting a feel for the Icelandic culture and people.

I especially appreciated the parts of the book related to Icelandic history and how that has influenced people’s practices in attitudes even today. For example, Iceland had a very high literacy rate even 1000 years ago, in contrast to the European mainland. I thought that the book was less useful in devoting a great deal of space to figures of speech which may shed some light on national character but are unlikely to be used by a traveler who is not fluent in Icelandic, particularly since many of these expressions involved somewhat rude language which a foreigner would likely not have the judgment to know when to use and when not to use.

This is a little book that is absolutely filled with witty and useful details on the Icelandic language in all its complexity and peculiar aspects. I've read it through once and need to read it again to get the full flavor of it, but my favorite section is the one on idioms and proverbs. These are the sayings normally unknown by the visitor to Iceland, and in loving this place for its rich literary heritage, my favorite is "Blind is the man who has no books."All of Sigmundsdottir's books are a great introduction to a beautiful country.

I thoroughly enjoyed this book. It comes with the link to the author’s website where you can listen to her lovely voice pronounce these seemingly impossible words and phrases. The stories behind the expressions are fascinating.

I bought this book before visiting Iceland and recommend it to those who want to get a feel for Icelandic humor. It is not designed to teach the language (which looks impossible to learn anyway), but in describing attitudes toward language, idiomatic expressions, etc. Sigmundsdottier gives a great introduction to Icelandic culture.

The only thing disappointing was that, as I'm not in Iceland, I couldn't buy a hardcover copy to match my set of Alda's other Little Books :) Otherwise, I thought this was an absolute riot. If you're a linguist, you'll enjoy the history of the language, which is comprehensive without being pedantic. If you're an Iceland-ophile, you'll enjoy the deeper understanding of the language and culture. If you're a human being, you'll enjoy the drawings and the absolute ridiculousness of some aspects of the language, which is a universal trait. Highly recommend!

I would highly recommend this book! Regardless if it's for rehab or just injury prevention - this book - and taping in general - is someting that I believe everyone should invest in. This book is written for anyone at any intelligence level to understand. It was recommended to me by a chiropractor who was just starting to introduce me to taping, and I am so glad tht I picked this book up. It really does an amazing job in restoring your power in restoring your body. For me, it was a great book that allowed me to manage some of my issues without being so dependent on my chiropractor. I don't know about you but I don't like paying $90 an office visit, twice a week. This book certainly doesn't remove my need to see a chiropractor but what it does do is it allows me to do my own taping at home which without a doubt has helped me. I love how simple this book was to understand. I do wish it had a little bit more color but if you're not going to use color, tihs book is as good as you can get. The format was easy to read and I truly enjoyed the step by step instructions it gives you. I get extremely anxious when I read things that don't have specifics and this book was AMAZINGLY detailed with its instructions. Take the time to read the basic terms and before you begin sections - it will make (or breaK) the experience of the rest of this book for you. As a newbie, I needed someone background info and this book did a great job of doing that. Definitely useful to help with some pains I've been having issues with. I do recommend though, that you use this book in conjunction with a massage therapist, chiropractor (this book came recommended from mine) etc.

This is an amazing book for those interested in beginning kinesiology taping and / or the benefits that it can provide. Before giving any specifics about taping, or mentioning tape at all, the author does a great job laying out the basics of movement, muscles, and anatomy. While this is not the focus of the book, these introductory sections are well-written and very helpful to anyone who is not an expert. Kim takes the same care and effort when getting to the taping itself, and helpfully lays out the general uses, benefits, and best buying practices of the tape itself. I love how she tells the reader how to use the tape before giving any 'recipes' on how to use it. This does not mean the specific taping practices are sub-par in any way. The taping sections are divided based upon body area (head, foot, etc.) and are clearly laid out, and the instructions are accompanied by detailed and helpful pictures. After trying some of the tapes out, especially in the lower back area, I was feeling better, and generally had less fatigue in those areas. Recommended for those looking to get into taping, but who don't need an exorbitant amount of information.

This is a great how-to book for learning Kinesiology taping. Remember seeing taping on the athletes in the olympics. This book explains what kinesiology taping is and why it is used. Taping can be used on any part of the body for anything from nasal congestion to strains, pains, cramps or injuries. Taping is used as a temporary treatment. This book advises that if taping yourself, be sure to work with a professional rehabilitation therapist first. Taping is meant to enhance the work of your therapist, not to replace actual hand on with your therapist. Basic terms used in the taping process are explained at length. Pictures and illustrations are easy to understand and follow. If experiencing chronic pain such as arthritis, plantar fasciitis, or tendonitis, taping may be a benefit for you. Talk with your therapist or chiropractor.

I have used this book to tape my knee and it helped! I happened to lunge/squat more than I normally do and the taped helped my right knee pain go away. I also taped my left hand thumb joint/thumb and that helped too. I use an ipad at work to type and it was hurting. I also got a blue tooth keyboard and tape myself and what a difference. I found the book easy to follow and easy for me to understand to take myself prn(as needed). I recommend this book whether you work in the medical profession or not. It helped me a lot. I also feel more confident about taping me or other people.

So I am of a certain age where injuries occur but I don't want to give up Some of my favorite activities. I jammed my knee while running and was in crazy pain for weeks. Ice and elevation helped but when I tried to go back to even light exercise I felt pain and instability. KT tape was recommended. I watched videos online to help with application but this book is fantastic. I love the pics and helpful hints on how to wrap different areas are injury. This is a great resource. Thank you!

Good addition to my medical library - the most important thing I learned is that you need a partner to make the applications and that hair removal in the area is essential for the taping to work.
