I got this book for $20 which makes it ok, but at full price this book is a horrible rip off. The information in this book is pretty lame. There is a break on in the margin informing the reader that well written code is referred to as "elegant code" in programming circles. So what? What does that have to do with OO design? That is just one of many. The examples are inconsistent. The flow charts change nomenclature for the naming and some other things from one chapter to the next without clearly or explicitly instructing on why the convention has changed. The book makes a specific point of noting that most OO languages begin arrays with zero rather than one, but then the examples for iterating through items appear as though the author assumes the array base is one rather than zero. Overpriced and not that good.
This is an excellent book to teach the beginning concepts of programming in a platform independent environment. There is no coding. Instead of learning language specific syntax, the students learn critical thinking and problem solving skills while simultaneously learning the concepts of programming. Once they finish the book, they can pick any OOP language and apply the principles to the specific syntax of the chosen language.Some people are disappointed that there is no coding but learning problem solving skills is the first step to effective software development. .
Great intro to understanding the principles of object oriented design and for those learning to code. I would highly recommend this book to anyone learning code and those that are already proficent in coding.
The content is great. It's clear, easy to understand and provides good detail. However I rented this book for a class and the book was shipped to me in pretty bad shape with rips and tears. I returned the rental right away and got the e-book.
This book was informative and insightful, but dull and boring (good reading material if you cant sleep). I learned a lot from this book and the course work from my school, but there are better ones out there that teach the same logic and design.
This author is imprecise in her use of terminology. She switches between similar terms for the same thing without signaling. She uses the same term for different things without signaling. She even uses incorrect terms.The author tends to use a concept in a discussion and then, later, she introduces the concept formally to the reader. Sometimes she never introduces the concept, and youstruggle with the text before you realize that a new concept is involved and you must set about untangling the spaghetti on your own.On a positive note, the author makes good use of analogies to illustrate abstract programming concepts. Overall, however, this text is a monument to mediocrity.
Was the right book, got me through my class, and got there on time. No complaints. The class I took was fantastic, and the book was a good read, not too drone-like!
Got this for school. It was pretty good at explaining the process of Object-oriented programming but the language it used wasn't very clear. The exercises it has throughout are helpful at giving you programming practice but it doesn't really jump into it till about half way through the book.
