I worked on this ship at Jacksonville Shipyards in 1981, the last time it was dry docked. I was a young welder and the repairs we made didn't make sense. We were instructed to replace portions of beams in the ballast holds when the entire beam was rusted out and needed to be replaced. I remember hitting a cargo bulkhead with a hammer and about 5 lbs of rust scales would fall off. The deck was so thin there were holes in it and I worried that I might fall through. I knew I wouldn't go out in the St. Johns River on that rust bucket and I couldn't believe anyone in their right mind would take it out in big water.Thank you Robert for telling the story.

Let me preface this review by stating that I was an engineering officer on the Marine Electric during one of those trips to Israel that the author mentions early in the book, and I worked on a number of ships owned or operated by Marine Transport Lines. I knew many of the officers and crew on the ship, the MTL shoreside staff, as well as the people mentioned from the engineer's union.This is a wonderful book and a great read, telling quite a bit about what went on, especially with the USCG investigative board. I'd have given it a five star review except for some minor errors of fact, mostly with misspelling of names, something I'd think an author would nail down correctly prior to going to print. Those errors do not detract from the overall narrative and importance of how this tragedy left a legacy for today's U.S.-flag merchant marine.

As a young AB in the 1980's I would have, unknowingly, loved to hop on the Marine Electric. But I was unable to get a birth on a ship for various reasons. I was vaguely aware that there were changes going on in the industry, that many of the ships were old, and that there were limited births available. I just didn't know the details. And in the union halls there were so many people in line, all trying to get the same few births available, it eventually seemed futile, and I gave up the idea of going deep sea.In my youth, we thought that the crack arrestors were just normal in steel ships, not that they were added to the aged ships to save them. This, and many other details are made clear in this book. As well as the complicity of so many of the players in the system. Reading this book helped me understand those forces that so strongly influenced my life back then. Certainly there were other forces at work too, such as the offshoring of the ships flags. But for anyone who is wondering what happened to the U.S. Merchant Marine in the 1980's this book is a much read.

I bought this book after the El Faro sinking as it was recommended by a friend who said it traced the investigations of a number of merchant marine losses over the years. Robert Frump is a master storyteller and the book was hard to put down. It is still early in the investigation of the El Faro but so far it appears that the problems with owners who send old ships to sea and Coast Guard and American Bureau of Shipping inspectors who allow them to continue to operate have not changed over the last 30 years. Read this book if you are interested in the history of US maritime disasters and the seaman who gave their lives.

A thrilling amount of the final hours of the merchant vessel Marine Electric. The author goes into great detail showing the lives of the men involved and points out the many mistakes that led to this tragedy. Well written and informative. A must read for all current and former merchant mariners.

I learned about the maritime trade, and the pitfalls of the economy that surrounded it. I learned about the back slapping way the agencies, companies, and the coast guard allowed so many things to be ignored. This book was well researched.The main rescue part of the story was small, there were a lot of rabbit trails so to speak and sometimes it was difficult to follow the timeline as the author expounded on a different point. It was interesting and worthwhile.However, it had FAR TOO MANY CURSE WORDS. I wish there was a way to block those out.

I have no idea how I can sum up this story. To say it lead me through tears, laughter, anger, joy and fury would be an understatement.My level of respect for the Coast Guard, mariners, investigative reporters (ones who want the truth, not dirt) and for the families who lost their husbands, sons, uncles, and brothers has grown exponentially.Read this book and know that you have a purpose, no matter your life's circumstances.

Very well written book. I knew very little about the Merchant Marine. Now I’ve caught the bug and I’m looking for other books about that subject.

About the Author

Kenneth Grahame began writing in 1879 as an escape from the drudgery of his job at the Bank of England. The Wind in the Willows started as a bedtime story for his son Alistair, and Grahame later continued the story in letters to his son. The book was published in 1908 and has never been out of print. Illustrator Robert Ingpen studied illustration and book design at The Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology. In 1986 he received the Hans Christian Andersen Award for his contribution to children's literature, and he was recently honored with the Membership of the Order of Australia.

This edition is called "The Classic Edition" and Kenneth Graham is the author. However, beware, this is not the long edition that I have read several times before. This is a shortened edition. I did not realize when I purchased it that "Classic Edition" was not the full version. The illustrations are beautiful, and the story is fine, but the shortened length deprives the reader of the detailed delights in the full version.

The story is great, and the Wordsworth Children's edition offers a complete, unabridged version with original photos - one per chapter. And there's the rub. There are now slightly abridged editions with wonderful illustrations, and full versions with more pictures, which is what small children often enjoy most about reading. I was upset that the reviews for all editions of the book were clumped together, so I couldn't tell which book people actually liked best, unless they pointed it out. As a final note, I've got a degree in literature, and I appreciated the original text. I've since seen the slightly abridged and fully illustrated Candlewick Illustrated Classics version, and would so much have preferred that one, if I had known.

I first had this story read to me before I could actually read the thing to myself and since that time I have probably read this particular book/story a couple of dozen times. Each reading reveals more hidden “word treasures” and I enjoy it as much now that I am as old as dirt as I did when I was a young grasshopper.One thing about it; as you get older, and hopefully wiser, you discover observations of human nature in the pages of this book that are often times overlooked by the young reader. As an old man I can now read this book and picture in my mind individuals I have known and met throughout my life that are living parallels to the characters in this book...good grief, I can even find myself if I am dead honest with myself!This one is considered a classic and for good reason. I suspect that it will remain so for years and years to come. Some stories are simply timeless.

With Robert Ingpen's illustrated edition, The Wind in the Willows is now given a beautiful makeover. I have read several different editions of Wind in the Willows to my children. Each one is gloriously beautiful, but I do adore Ingpen's color and his detail. Fans of Ingpen know his work on such books as Treasure Island.First off, Wind in the Willows is a beautifully written tale, as many others here have already told. So well written, it is, that some people believe it shouldn't be illustated at all. However, as an artist, I am not in that camp. I appreciate a person willing to render 2D or 3D life to the written word. What a task!This is a book which one can pick it up and put it down as one wishes. We sometimes read our favorite bits over and over. Grahame's writing is perfection, and we voice his characters for fun sometimes. There's a silly claymation television series that was done in the 1980s if you want to show the kids the t.v. version after you've read it to them. It was available on Netflix - not sure if it still is.Also, for 'purists', fyi, this is the book in its unabridged form (the original full length tale).For those looking for the abridged version, with lovely illustrations, check out the version with Inga Moore as illustrator. Moore has illustrated a version of The Secret Garden which is also lovely.

The Wind in the Willows is a very sweet, quaint and cozy collection of stories about animals who are kind of like humans. They have their little gentleman's society which functions pretty much as the English equivalent at the turn of the century. In the cultural regard, it has aged a little, so don't expect a single female character who is, well, basically a character at all, and you might encounter other details that would constitute a faux pas right now, but ultimately, the book is not about that. It's about true friendship, about being kind and nice and generally about the cozy and calm life - a life we seem to never really live anymore in the 21st century. Yes, this is a book I could read to children. This is a book that soothed me so much that it could put me to sleep when I suffered anxiety. This is a very sweet and lovely book, even despite some of the moralising in the stories (which, by the way, is done in a nice, not preachy way), it was very enjoyable indeed.You will probably like this if you enjoyed books like Anne of Green Gables.

This review isn't about the story; if you haven't read it by now, get the book and read it. This is a nice solid hardcover with a place marker ribbon, a good choice for our six year old granddaughter. The biggest drawback to this edition (and the reason for the 4 stars) is the relatively small number of illustrations.....but what there are are good.I would probably have preferred an edition with the illustrations by E.H. Shepard or Arthur Rackham (although the former would be more appropriate for someone who is six. However, neither of those editions was available on Amazon at less than collector's prices.The most dismaying thing in my search for this book is the number of abridged versions for sale, which I believe to be unconscionable. I can well imagine those sections of the book that a modern editor / publisher might feel "superfluous," particularly for young readers. Well, if someone finds a chapter tedious, skip over it. It's not like that won't be necessary later in life, and with any number of other books.

I was looking for more details and pictures. We are looking to build a craftsman style home and there were to many modern style in the book.

The Craftsman-Style Houses book is exactly what I was looking for. The illustrations and text are very informative. Now when I move to my craftsman house I have an idea about color and style.

Ok, I'll break from the pack and say I really like this book. As previously mentioned, it's actually a collection of older articles from Fine HomeBuilding. I bought the book many years back, when I first started to develop an interest in architecture. My architectural library has now outgrown a medium-sized bookcase, and I've even designed and built several houses. Nonetheless, I still find myself coming back to the articles in this modest book. Go forewarned - this collection does not focus purely on craftsman bungalows. Instead, the theme tying these articles together is a craftsman-like approach toward design, materials, and building. There are indeed some true Arts and Crafts treasures highlighted, like the Bolton house by Greene & Greene. Others though have a somewhat modern feel about them. Others still...well...we won't go there. I must say that even the articles about houses that I don't care for offered up something of value. Sometimes this is just a clever detail or use of material. My favorite article is the Greene and Greene inspired home by Rodger Whipple. This showed me how heavy timber could be elegantly integrated with conventional modern stick framing. I'd never seen this done so well and this little article heavily influenced the direction I took with my own work. Don't write this one off - I consider it a hidden gem.

I'd love to take that trip someday, but I mostly like that I have all this good advice paired with a concrete example. I feel empowered to build my own flexible and engaging trip to anywhere.

Even though I typically don't plan down to the detail provided in the book, it provides many, many ideas that I will incorporate into my next trip to France. With the book as your guide, you can travel with confidence.There are extensive web references and many tips, pointers that even seasoned travelers will appreciate. This is a great teaching book. I am someone who has never really played piano nor do I even know how to read music but within an hour was able to play When the Saints Go Marching and know what notes I was hitting.

I like this although it is much more of a beginner's book than I though. It is not really written for electronic keyboards though, it is a piano book. I will buy a different book for my needs, which is how to play electronic keyboards. If you have any piano knowledge at all, this book will be far too easy for you and it does not describe keyboard playing at all.

Since I've never played the piano before, I'm finding the lesson book quite helpful. It's easy to understand and learning short songs at first by using letters helps me become familiar with the keyboard. I'm now on the section on learning how to read music, so we will see how this goes! I would definitely recommend the book.

Having purchased a couple beginner’s guides to accompany a new keyboard, this was by far the easiest to follow and understand – the others I found a bit daunting for a complete beginner like myself. Nice, clear photos and diagrams, a good pace as I worked through the book, and very clear explanations about all the functions of my keyboard and how to incorporate the various rhythms and chords as I played. Highly recommended.

I bought a keyboard and the directions that came with it were sketchy at best. I bought this book because I was hoping it would explain more about the keyboard functions. It is sadly lacking information like that and refers you back to the manual. If the manual was better, I wouldn't have needed this book!!This book is very good at teaching the fingering. I would have given it 4 stars, except the notes are so small, they are hard for an adult to see. I have to bend over, which is hard on the back. I would imagine a child would have their head closer to the book, so it wouldn't be as big a problem.

A really good book for the beginner keyboardist, this book will not only teach you how to play keyboard, but it will definitely simplify the process of reading music notes if thats what you choose to do. Just patiently and slowly follow instructions and you will play the keyboard

Why I Think Boys May Enjoy ThisIf ever there was a book series that could be used to introduce the concept of “anti-hero” to a middle grade audience, it is Artemis Fowl (or, you know, my novella Anchihiiroo – Origin of an Antihero, but I digress). Artemis Fowl II, in the debut book of this series, is the very definition of someone willing to do anything it takes (even a little kidnapping and ransom-demanding) for what is ultimately a good cause (trying to save his mother). One of my favorite things about this series is that Artemis, being a genius, has a very large vocabulary. The diction in this book is a lot more advanced and complex than many other middle grade books and I personally used it as a benchmark in my own writing for not talking down to a young audience (which I find many, many middle grade and even young adult books do). Colfer has found that great sweet spot to challenge young readers without dismissing their capabilities.That being said, the story is a simple one that is very easy and fun to follow. The basic frame of the story follows the “heist” format. There are twists and turns and plans on top of plans. Sometimes they work and sometimes they fail. Sometimes they seem to fail but end up working (think of a fairy tale version of Ocean’s 11). Apparently Colfer himself has referred to it as “Die Hard with fairies” with which I can’t argue. Colfer has created his own sub-society of magical fairy creatures that presents the underlying mystery and magic to the series. At the same time, Artemis is a regular (well, as regular as a multi-millionaire genius pre-teen with a bit of an evil mastermind complex can be) human kid who breaks open the mysteries of this underworld.When I first discovered this series years ago, I was excited to find a middle grade series that had a protagonist that wasn’t your bubbly “chosen one” stereotype. Artemis, due to his intelligence and resources, is way deeper and more complex than your typical middle grade hero. That alone is worth a read. Couple that with a fun and colorful underworld full of faeries, gnomes, and other supernatural beings and it’s a can’t-miss.Content/AppropriatenessThis book is more than appropriate for the youngest of readers. Any violence is cartoonish in nature, for the most part. There are no language or sexual content concerns either.As the series goes on, there are points that get a little darker, but never does Colfer waver from the PG family friendly nature of this first book.As an aside: there is also a wonderful graphic novel adaptation of this first book that can serve to help a struggling reader or a reader who might need a little more visual aides (or just someone who really likes graphic novels!).Rating5/5 Giant Cartoon Mallets from Toonopolis, The Blog's Books for Boys Review

I actually enjoyed this off-beat little book more than I had expected, considering it has taken me years to getting back to reading it. I originally bought it for a defunct e-reader connected to another store--and I never finished reading it. I started over at the beginning, since it had been so long since I first sat down with it. This is an interesting, quick read. The pacing is pretty good. The story is quite funny and charming at times.I do wish there had been some formatting differences for the rather frequent point-of-view shifts. Sometimes there was no indicator, such as spacing, asterisks, a divider, etc. There was a lot of "gross-out" content. I really grew a little weary of the dwarf and his flapped trousers... For parents, there is a bit of light swearing consisting of mostly "damn" and "hell" (and a few made-up and implied explicitive phrases). Some may be concerned about the death of a rabbit at the hands of the flap-trousered dwarf.Overall, this was an entertaining read. I will likely be "back" for book two, once I've cleared up some of my Kindle slush-pile. I don't regret re-purchasing this in Kindle format, at least, it filled a few sessions of light reading for a few days.

I made it a third of the way through this drivel before calling it quits. I had no preconceptions about this beyond seeing that is had a Disney designation on the title page. (Kindle format) The main character should be Foul, not Fowl. Rotten genius of a boy, Artemis does not say he is looking for gold to cure his mother or find his father. He is looking to revive the coffers of a thieving family. I see Disneyworld thrown out there quite often, guess a plug for the outrageously overpriced theme park (Anyone pick up that Artemis is the genius (f)owl from Disney's The Sword In The Stone?) The characters are one dimentional, the story went all over the place. While I had no problems with the vocabulary, who exactly is the author targeting?I My last point, and this can be said of every aspect of Amazon reviews, from books to other products: If you like something a lot, give it a 5 star rating. Hate it? Give it one. I get not being able to change your mind and not able to fix it here, but if you just flat out rate a book wrong, you do a disservice to the author. I have this book two stars only because someone took the time to write and publish a book. The only 1's I door out to to poorly written and poorly edited books. No excuse for bad editing.

This is a great introduction to Sci-Fi for any kid in love with fantasy. Colfer mixes "real" magic with scientific advancements to create a race of creatures utterly and believably delightful. The snarky and pithy dialogue mixed with potty humor (e.g. a dwarf who eats and digests soil is constantly farting dirt missiles at would-be assailants) is sure to captivate the 9-12 age range of both genders. There is a redemptive quality of the book. There's really only one character (the main female role) that is entirely "good" but nearly every character has positive moral growth even with all the stealing, fighting and poor model behavior throughout.
