This is a must-have for anyone studying design. This book is as simple as a child's, yet it successfully relays concepts that I paid $7000 to learn over the course of two semesters. Contained in this book are the fundamentals from which ALL design stems. I cannot even put into words how succinctly elegant it is. Even if it is not required reading, buy it alongside your textbook. I guarantee that you will find yourself referencing this volume when your textbook becomes too convoluted. The way you view this book will change as you learn and grow. At first, its contents will seem childishly simple; then, as you grasp what design really involves, they will seem mind-blowingly complex. At your peak, you will see that it is a beautiful union of the two. I cannot recommend this book enough. If you are a designer, it belongs in your home.

I think I was expecting more from the design brief aspect of the content. The visuals were helpful in understanding the concepts. I would like to see more samples of writing a design brief.

Basic definitions of terms you probably had in high school geometry and grade school art classes. Devoid of insights. If you are really looking for a book that dissects how objects on the page relate to each other dynamically and relate to the viewer emotionally - if you are looking for a great introduction to visual literacy - buy Molly Bang's book instead: Picture This: How Pictures Work.

Love it, the basics never dies!!

This book gives definitions for basic terms that are supported by very basic illustrations. I can't understand if this book is written for 6th grade students or for adults who are total beginners in art and design, because if it's for 6th graders then they will be extremely bored with black circles and squares used to illustrate everything in this book, and if it's for adults- the terms and definitions are so obvious, why would any adult be interested in this?

Had to get this for a class, it is a simple and easy to read design book. It is short and concise and really look at the pictures, they are design in and of themselves!

I finished reading this book in an hour, its short and sweet but sometimes i terms used to describe the diagrams seem too simplified and summarized.

Okay first. I love the adventure.Holy sh*t, the adventure.Next, I love the HUGE character developments. And I can’t say more about that without my will power crumbling down- sooo I’ll stop there before I start screaming out pure smoldering spoilers.But. Please. Please. Know that the feels were oh so very real.I also need to mention how well this book builds up the feeling of urgency. That’s not easy to do, and I have to acknowledge the fact that this writer had me right under their thumb. (I can’t tell you how many times I had to force myself to slow down,)And now of course I have to mention the FEELS once more because.Ugghhhhhhhhhh.Sh*t got real.Lastly but most importantly I need to hail glory to the love story. Because yes. That’s really what we all came for, isn’t it?I would proudly be the first to point out that this series is going to be up there, nestled right in between The Clockwork Angel Series by C.C. and Carry On by R.R. because honestly, if those books were to get together and adopt a child- it would be The Timekeeper Trilogy. I know hands down this book will eventually get a movie.Now the only warning I’d have to give- is that this book is unbelievably addictive, (I ended up reading it in one go) and one of the last chapters had a line or two that made me, (a self proclaimed cheesy-romance-book-lover,) roll her eyes. And the feels got waaay real.In conclusion: Every second I spent reading this and the last book over and over was soooo absolutely worth it and I will enjoy every dark crevice of my agony whilst I await the next book.

The book is set a few months after Timekeeper and we see Danny (our main character) settled in with his life, living happily with his clock-spirit boyfriend and trying to mend his bond with his parents.Sadly, we need conflict to have a book so things happens.Clock towers are attacked in India but time hasn’t stopped as it’s supposed to.Obviously, because he is a hero and he can’t catch a break, our boy is sent here along with his fellow clock mechanic Daphne, who is part Indian.The story is captivating and the writing will make you fly through the book.Also, I’m in love with the cover

This is the second in a series and it is an amazing follow upto the first novel. I laughed, I cried, I yelled. Normaly, I dont deal well with cliff hangers (and honestly this no different), but the hanging ending really works! It leaves me wanting more and I love it!

This is an amazing book/series. Bottom line is simple, pick this series up, read it, and share it. An amazing original story that I didn’t know I needed until I read the first book, Timekeeper. Chainbreaker didn’t let up until I finished the book and now I sit here waiting on the third book. Again, I must say, pick up this series and spread the love!

This book will give you feels. Lots of them, in all forms. It's fantastic and exciting and you won't want to put it down!

This is the second book of an amazing trilogy. The way the author writes a new world of myths and mix it with steam pink is beautiful. The characters are amazing too, I personally can't help to fall in love with Colton and Daphne.All the fantasy in those books is so cool and well made. I can't wait to read the next one.

It is boring, the first book was better.

Introduction When I was new to Alcoholics Anonymous, people in the Fellowship suggested that I find a sponsor. But how was I to find one? And where? And, most important, who would it be? The AA Big Book didn't mention sponsorship, and there were no books written about it. I was scared to ask someone to sponsor me, so I put off getting one. I kept thinking I could do it myself. I couldn't. Now I see how much not having a sponsor delayed my progress in AA. When I was new to AA and looking for a sponsor, I didn't even know the right questions to ask. After a while, I did get a sponsor. Then one day, someone asked me to sponsor him. Suddenly, I had a big responsibility. I had dozens of questions that I wanted answered. And quickly. What was I supposed to do as a sponsor? How would I know when he was ready to take a Step? What if he drank? I had nothing to rely on but my own sponsor and what I had heard about sponsorship in AA meetings and from other sponsees.Twelve Step Sponsorship: How It Works came out of those early sponsorship experiences and out of the fear and earnestness I saw in my own sponsees when they were asked to sponsor somebody for the first time. They had many questions, but AA's only publication on this topic was a thirty-page pamphlet called 'Questions and Answers on Sponsorship.' So when a friend of mine made the suggestion, I decided to write something that would guide Twelve Step members through the sponsorship process.The result is a guide for both sponsors and sponsees, for both newcomers and old-timers. Its purpose is to help sponsors be the most effective sponsors they can be, and to help sponsees get the most they can out of having a sponsor. Because my experience and knowledge are mostly in AA, the ideas here will reflect mainly an AA perspective. Yet, this book will be useful to people in any Twelve Step Fellowship—e.g., Al-Anon, Narcotics Anonymous (NA), Cocaine Anonymous (CA), Overeaters Anonymous (OA), or Adult Children of Alcoholics (ACA)—who want to take advantage of the special resource of sponsorship.This book discusses what a sponsor does, how to find a sponsor, and how to be a sponsor. It also explains how to help a sponsee work each of the Twelve Steps. This book is a guide to the sponsorship process. The suggestions in Twelve Step Sponsorship did not originate with me. Everything in the book comes from AA through its members, meetings, and publications, but it is filtered through my perception. The only real authorities in AA are the Big Book (entitled Alcoholics Anonymous), Twelve Steps and Twelve Traditions, other Conference-approved literature, and decisions of the AA General Service Conference (as AA's elected voice). These sources are largely silent on sponsorship, so most of what is in this book comes from my own experience and from the experience of other AA members. As with AA, the only authorities in other Twelve Step Fellowships are their Conference-approved literature and their equivalent to the General Service Conference.In the process of writing Twelve Step Sponsorship, I have discovered just how different opinions are within the Fellowships regarding sponsorship. Part of the reason is that there is no authoritative book on the subject that we can all use as a common reference point. Instead, we have relied on what our own sponsors have told us and on what we have heard in meetings. Sponsorship has been a word-of-mouth phenomenon. The result is that the contents of this book do not necessarily represent a consensus of opinion within AA on sponsorship. The book represents my considered opinion and the opinions of those with whom I have spoken while writing it. Twelve Step Sponsorship is not an AA, Al-Anon, NA, OA, or CA Conference-approved book. In the best Twelve Step tradition, use what you can and leave the rest. In the best Twelve Step tradition, use what you can. Many AA and other Twelve Step Fellowship members will not agree with the detailed suggestions and commentaries in this book, although I believe they will largely agree with its four major points. Those points are as follows:1.      The primary responsibility of sponsors is to help their sponsees work the Twelve Steps.2.      A sponsor and sponsee have an obligation to discuss their mutual expectations, objectives, and requirements, if any, regarding the sponsorship relationship before they enter into that relationship.3.      A sponsor shares his or her experience, strength, and hope with his or her sponsee rather than trying to run the sponsee's life.4.      A sponsor must never take advantage of a sponsee in any way.Sponsorship is intensely, wonderfully personal. Each of us brings our own ideas, strengths, and weaknesses to it as both sponsors and sponsees. No one is an 'ideal' sponsor and no one is a 'perfect' sponsee. Thank God. But we can all learn to be better sponsors and better sponsees. Undoubtedly, there are certain native talents to the sponsorship art, but there are also some principles that can be brought to bear. Those with a load of 'talent' still need to understand the guidelines. Those with less natural 'talent' can improve their effectiveness by increasing their knowledge about sponsorship. No set of rigid rules could possibly do the phenomenon of sponsorship justice, but it is my hope that the observations in this book can begin to capture its spirit. As with all teacher/student relationships, it is difficult to tell who learns more: the sponsor or the sponsee. 1What Does a Sponsor Do? In some ways, a sponsor is like a good friend, a wise teacher, a private tutor, a favorite uncle, a seasoned mentor, an experienced guide, and that older brother or sister we always wanted but never had. Sponsorship, which includes aspects of all these roles, is nevertheless unique. A sponsor is someone who has been where we want to go in our Twelve Step program and knows something about how we can get there. His or her primary responsibility is to help us work the Twelve Steps by applying their principles to our lives. Sponsorship is a basic part of belonging to a Twelve Step Fellowship and potentially one of its richest experiences. Sponsorship can be, like friendship, one of life's great blessings. A sponsor's primary responsibility is to help a sponsee work the Twelve Steps. But sponsorship can also be a scary experience, at least at first. We become vulnerable whether we want to or not. We take on responsibilities and develop expectations. We take risks. We reveal who we are and unload our secrets. We let another person into our lives in an honest and intimate way. We drop our facade. It can be frightening as well as exhilarating to trust another human being and to build a relationship with him or her.This chapter describes some of the reasons for overcoming a natural reluctance we have to share our lives and our secrets with another human being. It explains what a sponsor does and, therefore, why it's important to have one. But first . . . A Brief History of Sponsorship The idea of sponsorship was born in Alcoholics Anonymous, the original Twelve Step Fellowship. Living Sober, an AA publication, describes how the term 'sponsor' came about.In the earliest days of A.A., the term 'sponsor' was not in the A.A. jargon. Then a few hospitals in Akron, Ohio, and New York began to accept alcoholics (under that diagnosis) as patients—if a sober A.A. member would agree to 'sponsor' the sick man or woman. The sponsor took the patient to the hospital, visited him or her regularly, was present when the patient was discharged, and took the patient home and then to an A.A. meeting. At the meeting, the sponsor introduced the newcomer to other happily nondrinking alcoholics. All through the early months of recovery, the sponsor stood by, ready to answer questions or to listen whenever needed. Sponsorship turned out to be such a good way to help people get established in A.A. that it has become a custom followed throughout the A.A. world, even when hospitalization is not necessary.1 Sponsorship has since become one of the foundations of the recovery programs of all Twelve Step Fellowships and one of the greatest blessings of membership. What a Sponsor Does AA defines sponsorship in this way: 'An alcoholic who has made some progress in the recovery program shares that experience on a continuous, individual basis with another alcoholic who is attempting to attain or maintain sobriety through A.A.'2 Every sponsor is different, just as each sponsee is different, but certain activities, responsibilities, and obligations are common in sponsor/sponsee relationships. The primary ways in which a sponsor shares his or her experience, strength, and hope to help a sponsee are as follows. A sponsor helps us work the Twelve Steps by providing explanation, guidance, and encouragement. Helping a sponsee work the Steps is a sponsor's most important function. The Twelve Steps are the foundation of AA and other Twelve Step recovery programs. The Steps require us to take action, but they were not meant to be worked alone. In fact, we cannot work them alone if we follow the way the AA Big Book suggests that we work them. The meaning of the Steps and how they are applied to life require explanation and interaction. I like this book and use it as a general guide when sponsoring others. I say general guide because there are a few things that I see lacking as someone that has been in the program for a few years, particularly in the suggested reading sections. For example, Step 1 suggested reading should always include The Doctor's Opinion (in my opinion), yet this isn't mentioned in the book. Otherwise, some of the "Questions" to have a sponsee address are great and I do use these and would recommend the book on that basis alone.

Excellent resource. Walks you through the Big Book and the 12 & 12 steps. Asking pertinent questions that help you understand the steps better. I have used the book with 3 sponsee so far and we all love it. It helps the sponsor know what they should be looking for to better guide someone through the steps. I did not have a sponsor who walked me through the steps well, so I always felt a little at sea with sponsees. The author of the book has become my guide.

Although this book helped expand the world that the author has created, it was terribly dull. Alvie was dull, Mg. Praff was dull, the villain was dull. There wasn’t much magical about the book either. The previous novels really showed a interesting wonder about material magic, but this one was so practical and boring.I’m also sick of the whole beautiful girl that can’t see that she’s beautiful just because no boy has ever told her. She went on and on about that and it just got annoying.There wasn’t even a mystery because we all knew who the bad guy was and the plot fell flat at the end. I’m not sure what the author was trying to accomplish but I hope she goes a different direction next time.

Just as the Paper, Glass, and Master Magician books the Plastic Magician is a fantastic tale. A young innocent miss, Alvie, heart’s desire is to become a great Plastic Magician. She knows that it will not come easily. Lucky for her, she is apprenticed to Master Plastic Magician Praff in London of all places, a far cry from her Columbus, Ohio home. Alvie has always been self-consciences of her appearance and manner; very unruly hair, thick glasses and pendency for falling over her own feet. She has never really dated and is somewhat shy, unless it has anything to do with Polymaking. Alvie expects to be picked up at the train station when she arrives in London. Problem however arises when she gets off on the wrong stop. To make matters worse, she is pushed aside by a women running to catch a train. Alvie loses her balance and her glasses at the same time. Alvie is blind without her glasses. She is rescued by a young good looking fellow, Bennet. He finds her glasses and sets her on the right path. She wonders if they will ever meet again. Alvie is in awe when she sees Mg. Praff and his grand mansion. Alvie is grateful that Mg. Praff is helping get ready to become a Plastic Magician. In return Mg. Praff admires Alvie’s determination a desire to work hard. As part of Alvie’s apprenticeship, she is required to volunteer at least 2 hours a week. Alvie decides to volunteer as an aide at the local hospital. She meets Ethel, a patient who has lost her left forearm and hand to an accident. This gives Alvie an idea for using Plastic Magic to help her friend….And the adventure begins. This tale is full of intrigue, deception, humor, budding romance, colorful characters and a very smart young woman. If you have read the other Paper Magician novels, you will love this one too. If you haven’t had the opportunity as yet now is your chance.

I think this series is meant for young adults, but (as an adult) I thoroughly enjoyed the first trilogy, and this was a pleasant return to the works of material magicians. I found this one lacking, though, with my only tangible observation being that I was expecting a more complex plot twist. The book also ends with what could be solid closure, so I can't tell if she'll be writing more with this new set of characters. I'd love to see a more in depth tie-in with the previous characters and perhaps the master magician concept, although this book introduces a similar concept that could be fodder for expansion. I'll definitely keep reading, if more books are in store.

It lacks the punch that the first three books contained. After reading it, I felt like it was something that was just quickly churned out without the same thought and details as the others. Maybe the author felt pressured into writing it, either from the publisher or just the success of the previous books...but I personally feel it's a poor addition to the series.

On the whole, this was a pleasant story, a quick and easy read. I found the concept of paper and now plastic magic original and interesting. Alvie, the protagonist, is a young budding genius although disconsertingly clumsy, naive and nearly blind. She apprentices to a full fledged plastic magician, where her enthusiam and originality lead them into new applications. She does the heroine bit quite well, never quitting.The crime aspect (theft of their ideas) is obvious and somewhat thin, the romance painfully awkward, and the outcome is predictable. I didn't hold my breath on this one.

I read this book in one sitting. It was engaging and interesting, even though I'm well beyond the the days of YA books. I have enjoyed the whole series and this book is similar in nature to the Paper Magician books. I enjoyed Alvie, brilliant, AD&D, making her way into the world of magic (and romance). Men being supportive of strong, intelligent women is a positive theme in this book with both Mg Praff and Bennet being good examples. I loved the Paper Magician cameo and hope to see more of that in future books. The book was well paced, lots of interesting situations and well developed characters. PG aside from a couple sweet kisses. I Hope there will be more Alvie and Bennet adventures!

In the same world as The Paper Magician and it’s sequels, and with a couple of the same characters. Alvie Brechenmacher from Columbus, Ohio, a place I know well, is an apprentice studying plastic magic with Mg. Praff in London. Her friendship with another young woman Ethel whose arm was amputated leads her to want to create a plastic prosthesis that’s more flexible. The creation of this prosthesis with Mg. Praff and demonstration at the magicians’ gathering is interspersed with the budding romance between Alvie and Bennet, who appeared in the Paper Magician series and is Ethel’s brother, and the efforts of the villain of the piece to steal and take credit for the invention. Lighter by far than the Smoke and Shadow series, as well as less complex than the Paper Magician novels.

She’s done it again! Continuing the magicians stories, and incorporating Ceony in for a half-second just added to the story definitely worth the wait; hopefully, she builds on this particular part and expands with another story line. We shall see!
