Overall, I really liked this book. It's got lots of great ideas, and my five year old was able to follow the instructions for the robots pretty well. However, there is one major issue. The designs use a lot of more specialized pieces (certain types of window, door, and wheel pieces, for example). We don't have any of some of them, or enough of others (even when ignoring the colors called for) in our particular combination of sets and regular Lego (from the Creative sets) to build many of the robots. We were able to troubleshoot around that and change some designs, but were unable to make others altogether. If that will be too much of a disappointment for you or your child, I'd suggest checking into that first, and possibly looking at this book in person at a store or library before you buy it, to make sure you have a combination of pieces that will work.
