This book is perfect for anyone who wants to take the NAB exam. I practically just used this book in concordance with James Allen other NHA guide. I will say the key factors to passing the NAB is truly understanding the federal regulations, understanding the Life safety codes, reading over financials from Allen's other book (chapter 3) and going over all the laws and amendments passed that affect the LTC industry ( Again, Allen's other book chapter 4). However, this book is your bible for future nursing home administrators. Not only does it provide an overview of all the regulations. It also tells you the intent of the regulations and possible compliance issues for each one. It is very thorough and I highly recommend it. There is a national study guide that you can purchase off the appropriate website, but I got to say it is very underwhelming in preparing you for the NAB.

Great for health care and federal state inspections. I used it when I took my National Nursing Home Licensure exam. Great reference book to keep in your office to review the regulations.

So I purchased this thinking it had the new cms rules. It does not, which being a new dns is a complete let down. Is there a 9th edition coming

WASTE of money. All information is easily found on CMS website, some of his other material is useful but not this. It is not useful for NHA, just surveyors. Could have been made much more useful

This text is an all inclusive for surveyors, nurses, administrators, ADONs, and DONs, and consultants interested in nursing home reviews. It details everything in the mind of a surveyor for a surveyor, and it enlightens anyone who wants to know nursing home requirements per the federal government and OBRA legislation. The text is written at a college level and is easily understood even if you are not in the health care profession.

Entire text consists of governance guidelines; therefore, information is difficult to follow. Additionally, organization of text is poor.

Great complete compilation of the CMS Medicare and Medicaid Regulations, along with the CMS Nursing Home Survey Protecol/Inspection forms. Although all information in this book is available for free on the internet, most are somewhat difficult to locate. It is a handy reference book as well.

Gives important information. Book is full of repeated paragraphs one right after the other. Sentences and words not spaced properly. Horrible proofreading. Publisher should be ashamed of the lack of quality in their work.

My 17 month old has recently taken an interest in anything to do with animals, so when I saw this book, I decided to give it a try so I could read/show it to him. Overall, I am pleased with the book especially given that right now, it's free.Pros:- It has 50 pages of mammals and mammal facts. The facts are short, but it's intended for children, so that's ok.- The pictures of mammals are close up shots. Some of the books i've been reading to my son show the animal at a distance, or with other animals. This book, however, shows each animal solely so your child can easily distinguish which animal it is. There are land-based mammals and sea-based mammals in this book, so I have an array of different mammals to show/teach my son.- It's a super easy read. If your kids are like my son, they're constantly throwing a book in your lap to read. I can zip through this book in about 4-5 minutes flat, getting it out of my son's blood for about an hour.Cons: (none. for the price, you really can't gripe about this book)To my 17 month old son, this book is awesome as he can see many different animals/mammals in a different light from his other animal books. I would recommend this book to any parent looking to entertain their child with something other than a television.

“Big Mammals of the World” is a 52 page book that will capture the attention of your animal loving child. It is packed full of beautiful colorful photographs. The book also contains approximately 20 interesting animal facts scattered between the stunningly vibrant pages in the book. The book is short and concise so that it will hold short attention spans very well. I would also like to add that this is not an easy reader for children though because there are a few tough words so parents will most likely have to actually read this aloud for their younger children. Although this book is technically recommended for children of all ages, as a teacher and a mother, I would probably recommend that this book is most suitable for approximate ages 4-10. As a mom and a teacher, this would also be a great book to have on a device in your classroom for children to be able to enjoy in a reading center.Every evening my son and I curl up on the couch and enjoy a book together, and lately he has been insistent on me reading from my phone. Thank goodness for inexpensive e-books!I purchased this product at a free or discounted price in exchange for my honest, unbiased opinion. My reviews are based on real, personal trial of the product. I rely on reviews before I buy, so I know how important they are when looking to get a good quality product worthy of your hard earned money. I am completely honest with my reviews because I want people to be able to purchase what they need or want with confidence. I have no connection to the seller. The free or discounted price did not influence my opinion in any way! If you liked my review and felt it helped you, please let me know by answering the question below and clicking the “Yes” button. Thanks!

I was very impressed with this book. I have a toddler and preschooler and like to find ebooks for them that have amazing pictures and a few interesting facts I can share. Often in this type of book I find that the text doesn't exactly match the picture. Usually the grammar is horrific and some sentences practically require translation. Not so with Big Mammals of the World. The pictures were amazing. The facts were relevant to the picture shown and I found it easy to discuss the picture in relation to them. They are also more in-depth than with most books, expanding my knowledge about some different mammals as well. I was also impressed with the variety of mammals included. In addition to elephants, rhinos, and gorillas, the book goes under the see to explain how whales are mammals as well. This is perhaps not a revelation to you or I, but having anything in common with a *whale* blew my 3.5 year old's mind. I highly recommend this book for both preschool children and younger gradeschoolers and plan to make sure I have it with me next time we go to the zoo so I can discuss more of the interesting facts with my children.I received this product free or at discount for my honest testing and review. I am under no obligation to provide a positive review and receive no incentives or rewards for doing so. My aim is to highlight features and drawbacks that I would want to know about as a buyer, not hype the product for the manufacturer. My remarks are sincere and my own. While it is true that many items are received at discounted rates or complimentary, my reviews are completely honest and are my personal experiences with the product. Again, it is just my opinion, your own opinion might vary. I received no monetary compensation and I am not required to give a good review.

I enjoy reading books like these to my child. This is a great learning tool offered as an ebook. The pictures are beautiful and fill the book with great facts to go along with each big mammals presented from around the world. Each page tells the information of a mammal in words a child can comprehend and enjoy. If you're looking for a great read on mammals from around the world, this ebook is a great choice!I received this ebook for free or a discounted price to offer my honest opinion concerning this ebook. My review is based on my personal trial of this ebook. I understand the importance of an honest review to help other consumers make an educated purchase. I hope you have found my review helpful.

This is a fun book. My whole family loves it. The pictures are great. I noticed in the low-star reviews that someone was offended because the main character is deceptive and says he wants to make a woman "his slave." If you read the book, you will see that it is not meant to be taken seriously. It is very, very silly. It is a cute story about a shy man who secretly loves a woman and executes a patient plan to win her heart. It's kind of romantic.Recommended for kids and anyone who appreciates things cute and silly.

I teach elementary school and have read this story to several classes and they hang on every word. I highly recommend even though I understand that Mr. Dahl, the author, was not a very nice man.

In my opinion, this is the best Ronald Dahl book. It's short, quick-paced, and too darn cute!!

Mira (just turned 8) - I would give it 5 stars because it was very interesting. It was so interesting that we finished it in only 2 nights. It was a very cute story.Mihaan (just turned 10) - I would give it 5 stars as it was a good story. I liked the part when Mr Hoppy lowered a hook to grab Mrs Silver's tortoise.

I really love Roald Dahl and I really liked reading Esio Trot but I'm only gave the book 3 stars because the book is awful compared to other of his books like George's Marvelous Medicine or Fantastic Mr. Fox. The book is short and not as clever as other books it only took me 15 minutes to read and I was bored and waiting for a turning point but the book did not have one.😢

The most disgusting story I've ever read. People really feel this is appropriate for children? This is NOT a love story. This is a tale of manipulation and deceit. PETS ARE NOT REPLACEABLE OBJECTS. I'm shocked that anyone would approve of this book.

What a cute book

Roald Dahl books are a favorite in our house (I loved Charlie and the Chocolate Factory as a kid and as a movie (yes the Gene Wilder one)). My daughter had a great time reading this book with mom. Highly recommended!

From the Inside Flap

A devastating disaster at sea . . . an officer who refuses to hide the truth. . . a courtroom confrontation with far-reaching implications . . . "The Perfect Storm meets "A Civil Action in a gripping account of one of the most significant shipwrecks of the twentieth century. In 1983 the "Marine Electric, a "reconditioned" World War II vessel, was on a routine voyage thirty miles off the East Coast of the United States when disaster struck. As the old coal carrier sank, chief mate Bob Cusick watched his crew-his friends and colleagues-succumb to the frigid forty-foot waves and subzero winds of the Atlantic. Of the thirty-four men aboard, Cusick was one of only three to survive. And he soon found himself facing the most critical decision of his life: whether to stand by the Merchant Marine officers' unspoken code of silence, or to tell the truth about why his crew and hundreds of other lives had been unnecessarily sacrificed at sea. Like many other ships used by the Merchant Marine, the Marine Transport Line's "Marine Electric was very old and made of "dirty steel" (steel with excess sulfur content). Many of these vessels were in terrible condition and broke down frequently. Yet the government persistently turned a blind eye to the potential dangers, convinced that the economic return on keeping these ships was worth the risk. Cusick chose to blow the whistle."Until the Sea Shall Free Them re-creates in compelling detail the wreck of the "Marine Electric and the legal drama that unfolded in its wake. With breathtaking immediacy, Robert Frump, who covered the story for the "Philadelphia Inquirer, describes the desperate battle waged by the crew against the forces ofnature. Frump also brings to life Cusick's internal struggle. He knew what happened to those who spoke out against the system, knew that he too might be stripped of his license and prosecuted for "losing his ship," yet he forged ahead. In a bitter lawsuit with owners of the ship, Cusick emerged victorious. His expose of government inaction led to vital reforms in the laws regarding the safety of ships; his courageous stand places him among the unsung heroes of our time. "From the Hardcover edition.

I worked on this ship at Jacksonville Shipyards in 1981, the last time it was dry docked. I was a young welder and the repairs we made didn't make sense. We were instructed to replace portions of beams in the ballast holds when the entire beam was rusted out and needed to be replaced. I remember hitting a cargo bulkhead with a hammer and about 5 lbs of rust scales would fall off. The deck was so thin there were holes in it and I worried that I might fall through. I knew I wouldn't go out in the St. Johns River on that rust bucket and I couldn't believe anyone in their right mind would take it out in big water.Thank you Robert for telling the story.

Let me preface this review by stating that I was an engineering officer on the Marine Electric during one of those trips to Israel that the author mentions early in the book, and I worked on a number of ships owned or operated by Marine Transport Lines. I knew many of the officers and crew on the ship, the MTL shoreside staff, as well as the people mentioned from the engineer's union. This is a wonderful book and a great read, telling quite a bit about what went on, especially with the USCG investigative board. I'd have given it a five star review except for some minor errors of fact, mostly with misspelling of names, something I'd think an author would nail down correctly prior to going to print. Those errors do not detract from the overall narrative and importance of how this tragedy left a legacy for today's U.S.-flag merchant marine.

As a young AB in the 1980's I would have, unknowingly, loved to hop on the Marine Electric. But I was unable to get a birth on a ship for various reasons. I was vaguely aware that there were changes going on in the industry, that many of the ships were old, and that there were limited births available. I just didn't know the details. And in the union halls there were so many people in line, all trying to get the same few births available, it eventually seemed futile, and I gave up the idea of going deep sea.In my youth, we thought that the crack arrestors were just normal in steel ships, not that they were added to the aged ships to save them. This, and many other details are made clear in this book. As well as the complicity of so many of the players in the system. Reading this book helped me understand those forces that so strongly influenced my life back then. Certainly there were other forces at work too, such as the offshoring of the ships flags. But for anyone who is wondering what happened to the U.S. Merchant Marine in the 1980's this book is a much read.

I bought this book after the El Faro sinking as it was recommended by a friend who said it traced the investigations of a number of merchant marine losses over the years. Robert Frump is a master storyteller and the book was hard to put down. It is still early in the investigation of the El Faro but so far it appears that the problems with owners who send old ships to sea and Coast Guard and American Bureau of Shipping inspectors who allow them to continue to operate have not changed over the last 30 years. Read this book if you are interested in the history of US maritime disasters and the seaman who gave their lives.

A thrilling amount of the final hours of the merchant vessel Marine Electric. The author goes into great detail showing the lives of the men involved and points out the many mistakes that led to this tragedy. Well written and informative. A must read for all current and former merchant mariners.

I learned about the maritime trade, and the pitfalls of the economy that surrounded it. I learned about the back slapping way the agencies, companies, and the coast guard allowed so many things to be ignored. This book was well researched. The main rescue part of the story was small, there were a lot of rabbit trails so to speak and sometimes it was difficult to follow the timeline as the author expounded on a different point. It was interesting and worthwhile. However, it had FAR TOO MANY CURSE WORDS. I wish there was a way to block those out.

I have no idea how I can sum up this story. To say it lead me through tears, laughter, anger, joy and fury would be an understatement. My level of respect for the Coast Guard, mariners, investigative reporters (ones who want the truth, not dirt) and for the families who lost their husbands, sons, uncles, and brothers has grown exponentially.Read this book and know that you have a purpose, no matter your life's circumstances.

Very well written book. I knew very little about the Merchant Marine. Now I’ve caught the bug and I’m looking for other books about that subject.

This edition is called "The Classic Edition" and Kenneth Graham is the author. However, beware, this is not the long edition that I have read several times before. This is a shortened edition. I did not realize when I purchased it that "Classic Edition" was not the full version. The illustrations are beautiful, and the story is fine, but the shortened length deprives the reader of the detailed delights in the full version.

The story is great, and the Wordsworth Children's edition offers a complete, unabridged version with original photos - one per chapter. And there's the rub. There are now slightly abridged editions with wonderful illustrations, and full versions with more pictures, which is what small children often enjoy most about reading. I was upset that the reviews for all editions of the book were clumped together, so I couldn't tell which book people actually liked best, unless they pointed it out. As a final note, I've got a degree in literature, and I appreciated the original text. I've since seen the slightly abridged and fully illustrated Candlewick Illustrated Classics version, and would so much have preferred that one, if I had known.

I first had this story read to me before I could actually read the thing to myself and since that time I have probably read this particular book/story a couple of dozen times. Each reading reveals more hidden “word treasures” and I enjoy it as much now that I am as old as dirt as I did when I was a young grasshopper. One thing about it; as you get older, and hopefully wiser, you discover observations of human nature in the pages of this book that are often times overlooked by the young reader. As an old man I can now read this book and picture in my mind individuals I have known and met throughout my life that are living parallels to the characters in this book...good grief, I can even find myself if I am dead honest with myself! This one is considered a classic and for good reason. I suspect that it will remain so for years and years to come. Some stories are simply timeless.

With Robert Ingpen's illustrated edition, The Wind in the Willows is now given a beautiful makeover. I have read several different editions of Wind in the Willows to my children. Each one is gloriously beautiful, but I do adore Ingpen's color and his detail. Fans of Ingpen know his work on such books as Treasure Island.First off, Wind in the Willows is a beautifully written tale, as many others here have already told. So well written, it is, that some people believe it shouldn't be illustated at all. However, as an artist, I am not in that camp. I appreciate a person willing to render 2D or 3D life to the written word. What a task! This is a book which one can pick it up and put it down as one wishes. We sometimes read our favorite bits over and over. Grahame's writing is perfection, and we voice his characters for fun sometimes. There's a silly claymation television series that was done in the 1980s if you want to show the kids the t.v. version after you've read it to them. It was available on Netflix - not sure if it still is.Also, for 'purists', fyi, this is the book in its unabridged form (the original full length tale). For those looking for the abridged version, with lovely illustrations, check out the version with Inga Moore as illustrator. Moore has illustrated a version of The Secret Garden which is also lovely.

The Wind in the Willows is a very sweet, quaint and cozy collection of stories about animals who are kind of like humans. They have their little gentleman's society which functions pretty much as the English equivalent at the turn of the century. In the cultural regard, it has aged a little, so don't expect a single female character who is, well, basically a character at all, and you might encounter other details that would constitute a faux pas right now, but ultimately, the book is not about that. It's about true friendship, about being kind and nice and generally about the cozy and calm life - a life we seem to never really live anymore in the 21st century. Yes, this is a book I could read to children. This is a book that soothed me so much that it could put me to sleep when I suffered anxiety. This is a very sweet and lovely book, even despite some of the moralising in the stories (which, by the way, is done in a nice, not preachy way), it was very enjoyable indeed. You will probably like this if you enjoyed books like Anne of Green Gables.

This review isn't about the story; if you haven't read it by now, get the book and read it. This is a nice solid hardcover with a place marker ribbon, a good choice for our six year old granddaughter. The biggest drawback to this edition (and the reason for the 4 stars) is the relatively small number of illustrations.....but what there are are good.I would probably have preferred an edition with the illustrations by E.H. Shepard or Arthur Rackham (although the former would be more appropriate for someone who is six. However, neither of those editions was available on Amazon at less than collector's prices. The most dismaying thing in my search for this book is the number of abridged versions for sale, which I believe to be unconscionable. I can well imagine those sections of the book that a modern editor / publisher might feel "superfluous," particularly for young readers. Well, if someone finds a chapter tedious, skip over it. It's not like that won't be necessary later in life, and with any number of other books.

Craftsman-Style Houses (Great Houses), by Fine Homebuilding

From Library Journal

This anthology of 28 articles from the first ten years of Fine Homebuilding magazine is mainly devoted to the building or remodeling of houses closely or loosely related to the crafts style (wide eaves; low-pitched, gabled roof; exposed rafters; heavy use of wood and stone; and fine details) of the early 1900s. The thrust of the articles is to discuss the solution of some unique site, construction, and/or code problem. Among the other subjects are designs from Gustav Stickley, Charles Green's James House, and Bernard Maybeck's Wallen II house--all noted for their craftsman-style work. Readers planning a house will find some bits of help, but almost no cost data. Of interest to architects, builders, designers, and arts and crafts aficionados.- W.T. This book contains lots of information about how to repair, replace, and rejuvenate built-in features of Craftsman Style houses.

Nice book, Great pictures.

Excellent, as usual for Fine Homebuilding

I was looking for more details and pictures. We are looking to build a craftsman style home and there were to many modern style in the book.

The Craftsman-Style Houses book is exactly what I was looking for. The illustrations and text are very informative. Now when I move to my craftsman house I have an idea about color and style.

Excellent condition and very informative.

Great book!

Ok, I'll break from the pack and say I really like this book. As previously mentioned, it's actually a collection of older articles from Fine HomeBuilding. I bought the book many years back, when I first started to develop an interest in architecture. My architectural library has now outgrown a medium-sized bookcase, and I've even designed and built several houses. Nonetheless, I still find myself coming back to the articles in this modest book. Go forewarned - this collection does not focus purely on craftsman bungalows. Instead, the theme tying these articles together is a craftsman-like approach toward design, materials, and building. There are indeed some true Arts and Crafts treasures highlighted, like the Bolton house by Greene & Greene. Others though have a somewhat modern feel about them. Others still...well...we won't go there. I must say that even the articles about houses that I don't care for offered up something of value. Sometimes this is just a clever detail or use of material. My favorite article is the Greene and Greene inspired home by Rodger Whipple. This showed me how heavy timber could be elegantly integrated with conventional modern stick framing. I'd never seen this done so well and this little article heavily influenced the direction I took with my own work. Don't write this one off - I consider it a hidden gem.

The trip sections give you highlights and options for hotels, restaurants, places of interest but also for needed leisure breaks. The list of essential French phrases is user friendly and can be downloaded for easy access on your smartphone. Travel within France is explained in detail, and antidotes of the adventure bring the trip to life. The first train trip section is full of useful information. My only suggestion is a bit more detail in the Index to allow to easier search for some these very important specific tips.Overall, this book is much more than a list of things to see - it is a full experience, written in a helpful and engaging way. I can't wait to see what adventures await on the next Great Trip!

An honest and thoughtful primer for those avoiding structured tours or who do not wish to travel abroad with a large group of Americans. The authors cater to the DIY crowd who have the confidence to experience travel adventure on their own terms.Enough practical tips, suggested destinations, cultural context, and logistical information are presented to provide the prospective traveler with the everyday information needed to relax and enjoy the experience of living in France for the duration of their visit. The book is as much focused on the dynamics of interpersonal relations between travel companions as it is a travel guide. The advice offered in the "Travel Style" chapter alone would benefit any traveler to any destination. From budgeting expenses for your French adventure to selecting and folding your clothing for packing, and reserving a table at a Parisian bistro, this travel guide is full of information you will use. Suggestions are offered to help you decide which of your credit and debit cards to take, trip planning calendars, where to visit outside of metropolitan Paris, hotels, museums, and train connects with memorable vistas that form the stress-free memory of your great trip to France. This book is more of a guide for self-actualization while traveling than a listing of hotels, restaurants, and historical facts. This is accomplished by providing common everyday knowledge needed to relieve much of the stress of negotiating quotidian activities like buying train and tram tickets, interacting with waiters, exchanging money, avoiding pickpockets and scams, selecting museums to visit, ordering wine, and avoiding conflicts with travel companions. Lots of useful information.
