I was transported back in time to the days of high society England, beginning with Kick’s presentation to Queen Elizabeth and ending in tragedy that seems to follow the Kennedys.Evenings at the 400 with young women named Debo and Sissy, with Kick and their aristocratic young men, are so vividly described that I could almost feel the tickle of Champagne bubbles. Is it any wonder that she falls head over heels in love with Billy Hartington, one of England’s most eligible bachelors, after spending so much time with him at nightclubs and house parties? As World War II begins, the men enlist, but the parties continue. The Kennedy family has been in the news for years, we have witnessed their tragedies, we have watched as the sons, daughters and grandchildren met with fates that were undeniably hard to endure. This story about Kathleen "Kick" Kennedy is no different, except it is about someone we do not know as well.The story starts in 1938 with Joe Kennedy, Sr. is the American Ambassador to England...at a time when Europe was teetering on the brink of war. There they were on Prince Street, 11 of them, 9 children. Joe, Jr. and JFK at that time were not always around, but that was home base. Kick was 18 years old, just out of convent school and had her whole life in front of her. She had a great personality, outgoing and fun, but there was a serious side of her, too. Steeped in Catholicism she was always concerned about doing the right thing, of not committing sins and praying for guidance as she went about her daily living.Joining the social lives of the rich and elite, she meets and falls in love with Billy Hartington, the future Duke of Devonshire. But he was Protestant and as a Catholic, Kick knew the match would never be approved. When the war breaks out, the Kennedys leave England to return to the U.S. However, Kick having no choice but to go, yearns to go back to England (which she loves) and back into the arms of Billy.As you read this novel, you learn a bit more about the family. Their efforts to keep up appearances, to avoid scandal at all costs and just how competitive they were. It was difficult to read how both Rose and Joe, Sr. handled the unfortunate situation with Rosemary Kennedy. It was obvious that the parents thought more about their sons than their daughters, especially the fact that Joe,Jr. was the bright and shining star with hopes of him becoming President.The book was well written, albeit a bit too long. Yet, I would highly recommend it.

This novel is a richly imagined, evocative and detailed portrait of life in England, Europe and the U.S. in the years surrounding WW II. The book focuses on the Kennedys and their circle in England, Europe and the U.S. Readers will spend time with staunchly Catholic parents, Joe and Rose, who have many aspirations for their children. Joe Jr. and JFK are portrayed as they fall in love and commit to service in the war. Rosemary and her emotional struggles are described and the younger Kennedy children also have a place. The book though is most especially the story of Kathleen (Kick) Kennedy and her friends, colleague, romances and search for meaning.Kick falls in love with England where she strives to find a worthwhile life while also enjoying a busy social life with her friends, including Deborah Mitford and her circle. Kick is always aware of what is expected of her as a Kennedy but struggles with this.Nowadays when marriages are not universally expected to take place between people who are the same (the same race, religion, socioeconomic status, etc.), it is hard to recall that this was not always the case. However, when Kathleen (Kick) Kennedy, of Irish background and Catholic, falls in love with Billy, an aristocratic British, Protestant, her parents clearly do not approve. How Kick chooses to live her life forms the core of the novel. I do not want to put in any spoilers so will stop here.I found The Kennedy Debutante to be an excellent historical novel. I hope that you will too!

This is a well-written, well-researched, well-plotted and well-conceived book. From the first page to the last, I was riveted by the characters, by the plot and by the timing of the story. There are few books today that can keep my mind off what is going on in the world, but this is one of them. I could hardly wait to get back to it at the end of a long day. It is a great novel, based in fact, that will whisk you away. Worth your time.

About the Author

Ed Boland has dedicated his entire professional life to nonprofit causes as a fundraiser and communications expert. He has worked for predominantly educational institutions but also for arts and social service organizations. Boland was an Admissions Officer at his alma mater, Fordham, and later at Yale, and lived in China as a Princeton in Asia Fellow. He is now a senior administrator at the nation's premier educational access program, which places gifted students of color at leading private schools. He lives in New York with his husband.

If this isn't mandatory reading for your college program - you are not being properly prepared.This is by far the most accurate portrayal of urban education ever written. Shame them into changing the "lesson plan cures all" mentality. If they haven't taught in the urban environment, they shouldn't be teaching you.Where Mr. Boland thinks he has failed as a teacher, he's actually taught us all a lesson in the failed urban educational system. As a "failed" teacher he may have achieved more progress with this book than any of us ever will in our classrooms. I applaud his honesty and hope this book is used to inform prospective teachers of the world they are about to enter.Thank you Ed.

This a book I have read before : idealistic young man wades into the fray at an inner-city school, emerges older and wiser. Boland makes old material look new, and paints a vivid and engaging picture of himself and of his charges. At times, the book is very funny, as when he met a new student teacher who was all fired up to "give something back" to the underprivileged youths, and emerged from school months later hysterical, in tears, and shrieking of her students, "They are ANIMALS!"Boland is honest in admitting that he accomplished very little in his year in the 'hood. He lacks the courage, however, to draw any radical conclusions. Like other authors of the works of this genre, he feels compelled to offer happy talk remedies, all of which are trite. After telling us in gory detail about students being waved through classes with phony grades, he cites grade data to justify increased spending on more programs, for example.

From the very first page, it’s clear that this is something different. Not an uplifting story of a teacher who truly cares making a real difference – there’s a teacher who truly cares, but he can’t make a difference. It’s a rare story, a story of failure. Failure of our education system and failure of an individual who wanted to be an effective teacher, but ended up leaving teaching. Even with a serious topic and gut-wrenching portraits of teens in extreme circumstances, it a quick read. But the stories and sense that we need to fix our broken and unfair education system will stay with you for a long time.

Probably most readers who have taught adolescents can painfully identify with the experiences and the emotions Ed so vividly describes. I have long felt that our current systems are programmed for failure in urban environments, if we continue on our current course. Most effective teaching during childhood and adolescence must take place in the home, and we can't expect to undo in six hours a day the residuals of a dysfunctional environment during the other eighteen hours. We need somehow to focus upon early intervention, and we also should discard this current ethereal notion that everyone should go to college. In my most recent experience, teaching in a junior college, enrolling unprepared students in calculus, physics, and other courses in which strong reading and writing skills are essential, only sets up poor students for failure. Offering review sessions and tutoring is rarely productive, in that critical thinking competence and the ability to organize and focus on material must be learned prior to age 18. Many of my students simply gave up and quit, and then also refused to consider training in marketable skills. They might have made sensational mechanics, welders, cooks, and many other honorable trades, but they owed massive amounts of loan debt, and they had incurred a distaste and fear of the concept of any type of school. Identifying talent and ability in career fields that offer financial security and build self-esteem, early on, and encouraging and guiding students in those directions, would have a much stronger probability of success than our current practices of pushing marginalized students toward areas that are foreign to them, and which demand strong abstract thinking skills and delay of gratification, rather than more concrete processing, and shorter-term completion goals. Additonally, in my experience, depression in adolescence usually surfaces as anger and rebellion, rather than sadness. Unlike adults, who can sometimes say, "I just feel down," they typically attack others verbally and/or physically as a primitive method of communication. We desperately need to more focused upon identifying mental illness issues in our youth, and making treatment and family intervention a higher priority. I'm sending this book to many on my list.

We may try to blame the schools and ineffectual teachers for failing these children, but parents and/or society failed them long before they got to school. There is no happy ending to this book. We have yet to break the cycle of failure and despair that faces many of our children every day. Unfortunately, the teachers and administrators who care the most often leave the profession. Even though Ed did not return to his classroom, he has continued to teach, and this time the students are his readers. I thank him for his generosity in sharing his story.

An accurate description of the state of education in public schools today. The author shows the dedication and selfless commitment of teachers whose expectations are blocked by state mandates and unrealistic learning environments. And students bear the consequences.

Excellent work detailing with what life in really like in an inner city urban classroom. The author not only tells the story from his own year in such a classroom, but presents ways improvements MUST be made if these kids are to receive an education. I thoroughly enjoyed the way he presented possible solutions to the problem.

My all-time favorite history-and-disease book. First read it as a teen many many years ago, and it probably played a part in focusing my interest in biology. Dr Zinsser shines through on every page, making it highly readable as well as good science (and sociology) history.I highly recommend it.

Interesting and witty read. For anyone interested in the history of Typhus Fever, or just the transmission of disease in general. And/or for people interested in history and/or science. A one-of-a-kind book.

This book met all of my expectations, and more. It was interesting to read the stories of how diseases and parasites had played major roles in the history of the world. A fascinating book.

Even though this book was required for a class, I found it to be entertaining and informative. This book is about how "vermin" have influenced humans throughout history, and why we have certain perceptions about rodents and insects. The book is pretty comprehensive, covering human history from the birth of agriculture to the industrial age to the present day. I think of rodents as misunderstood, so this really resonated with me and helped me understand why some people hate them so much. This book is a pretty short, quick read, so if you're interested in the history of rodents, bugs, and disease, check it out.

I love this book! Originally published in 1934, it has withstood the test of time. Clearly, the writer loves his subject. His writing is sly, witty and informative, as he draws the reader in to a growing appreciation of this unusual subject.

I would recommend this book to readers who love a good fake it till its real relationship story.My main concerns were with Bryce and how clueless he could be while seeming to be this ladies man. In the beginning we were told about his horn dog tendencies but they really never came into play in his personality.Another concern was that I felt things didn't resolve with his father and I was left wondering about that dynamic. I wonder about how much pull his father has over him using money, only because money did seem to be Important to Bryce.I love and adore that we got to see the story from Bryce's pop it added a layer to the story that I personally found enjoyable and wished there was more of.Haley's mom was another concern and the glossed over topic of her half brothers. Her entire mood towards Bryce made no sense, you would have assumed her father to be more protective but I'm not sure. This seemed like a mini plot twist thrown in just to add fluff to the piece and I think the story could have done without.Over all I read this book in one sitting and enjoyed it. I giggled and yelled and while I have many lingering questions I would still say I'm happy to have read this piece.

The writing is awesome, but I am sorry, the main character was a pain! I get that she was supposed to be witty and all, but she was not. She was bossy and a little delusional. She would straight forward tell him to kiss her, to hold her, to do this and that, while they hadn't even developed a relationship in any kind. She'd get mad at everything and her friend would meddle in their relationship all the time. The boys were also not my cup of tea. It's important to understand their background and a rich family son, but omg, everybody has limits and I felt bad for all these people. I know it's a book, but it's too unrealistic and too much. Even though I love YA, I kinda dragged this one and rolled my eyes frustrated at some actions. Not sure if it's worth it, but I read it all.

This book had a One Tree Hill air about it, and everyone knows I love that. One of the main character’s name was even Haley! There was Nathan, too, but he was the best friend of Bryce.Haley had an infectious spirit. She was your regular farm girl and lover of all furry creatures. Growing up with two brothers had taught her how to hold her own, and she wasn’t afraid to stand up for herself. She and Lana had a wonderful friendship, and I’m curious as to if friendships like theirs really exist. One of the best parts about Haley was that she didn’t let things like money interfere with her opinion of someone. She didn’t let Bryce’s expensive clothes and cocky attitude deter her.Blackmail played an integral role in this story. The game that Bryce and Haley played to try and get the other to crack was entertaining. Bryce just wanted her out of his life, and Haley wanted someone—anyone—to see her in a new way. Being stuck at the hip meant an inevitable attraction, but they were polar opposites. It took a lot more than attraction for them to work as a couple. There were multiple times when I wasn’t sure if a happily-ever-after was in the cards for them. It was what I enjoyed so much about Lana and Nathan’s relationship. They were the balance that Bryce and Haley needed, the calm to their storm.A quick read and an irresistible romance, I can’t wait to read more books in The Boyfriend Chronicles.

I am just starting to review this Reference Guide.In addition, I purchased the MS Word 2007 Intro. and "intermediate" Reference Guides for my own use, never knowing that I would become a Volunteer Computer Instructor at Goodwill of Central Arizona from July 2010 to November 2011.These are Great Memory Joggers, especially if you are teaching students who do not know how to turn on a computer, and have never heard of Microsoft Office Suite.Many thanks, Amazon.com.

all of the microsoft quick refernce guides are excellent. i keep the Access and Excel "cheat sheets" in my office. these sheets are laminated and are much easier than looking for info in a book or on the computer

Not much you can say about this - It is a tip sheet and it has tips.I use them at work for my employees to share. They provide some good basic tips, but of course it will not teach you Access like a book or training program will. So far they have held up well.

I wanted to use Access but have a limited experience with it. This is a great help for that purpose...makes learning and trying things much easier.
